    Good to get back to one of the core fundamentals of XK8 ownership: the mantra of battery related problems. Please keep up the good work, sir

    i am who emailed with the black xk8 in florida, your advice has already helped me so much in my 3 weeks of ownership, like resetting the windows as they were getting confused and not going up when closed, learning the key hold roof trick, tail lights, etc. i’ll be going back and forth your old videos long to come!

    Lovely stuff. Having spent 40 years in the Space & Defence industry, I love revealing the truth when I turn up with a milli-micro ohmeter, or do some high current Earth bonding tests to get the bottom of other's perceived views that their equipment is in good condition. Always get your supply and Earths rock solid, then you can be certain that all your other measurements are absolute, and with good reference.

    Thanks for the video! Been having some weird electrical problems & slow starts, I think mine were related to my posts, which were slightly corroded. So far the problems have subsided so hopefully that did the trick.. But I’ll keep this in mind for the future.
    Funnily I remember thinking to myself that it was an odd looking part with the strands when I was cleaning up the posts & now I find this video lol.

      Glad you enjoyed it Udo. I would love to say I can diagnose cars remotely. just by reading 'disturbances inThe Force'😁. But the truth is Ive had two earth cables fail on me previously, so the symptoms are familiar.

    When my '98 XKR died I would leave the ignition on, open the battery compartment and touch the earthing strap until the boot light came back on, and off I would go again! I have since replaced the earth strap and battery, only to have my starter motor recently conk out. True love knows no budget!

    Thanks for that video, John! My XKR started acting up with it’s right headlamp. It goes out at random when I accelerate, break or turn intensively. My battery mounts are missing and the battery is probably moving all the time which will affect the negative lead. I’ll check and see if that causes my problems.

      Short negative lead from the battery goes to a grounding point in the Boot area on a chassis leg

    nice vid John ...as always go with the obvious first ...(which always isn't obvious !) ... having issues with my 2005 XJ 3.0V6 petrol , Central lock not activating all the time on fob (nor other functions ) nor on spare fob and 2 warnings intermittently showing up and going away again (ABS ETC) , Bought your recommended voltage USB monitor which shows 12.9/8/7 v stationery , 14.5 to 14.8v initially startup/driving but this generally drops to 13.2/.1 v while driving after that ...Thinking battery may be on way out (??) looking at replacement Yuasa approx 150 euro 100aH/900A ...... appreciate any insights ...Keep up the good work ..Chris

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 года назад

      I agree its probably close to end of life and it may be worth swapping as preventative maintenance. Im a big fan of Yuassa as you can see, so good choice👍 . ABS, trac control etc lights 'may' be battery related.
      I doubt the central locking is though.. You can check by seeing if the locking works on all doors repeatably when using the key in the door or pushing the drivers door handle. If they always lock then the Battery is unlikely to be the culprit, nor the servo motors.
      I would suspect the battery in the remote or the cleanliness of the insides of the fob or the Ariel on the security module is loose/damaged

    Hi John.
    I also have a early XK8, chassinr ends with 004182, with no brake light on the trunk.
    However, what i wonder about, what is the connector there with your cd player in the trunk??
    Regards
    Robert

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 года назад

      Hi Robert. If you mean the Mostly black connector with an orange stripe. It is a remote connection point for my CTEK MS5 trickle charger. I plug in there to save removing the battery cover.

      How is it to connect the charger under the bonnet?
      Dont want to have the trunk open to maintenance charge the battery.

      Does it go into limp home mode during a particular event? Such as a particular movement on the gear selector? When braking, engaging cruise control, etc
