I am 75, living in Phila, MS..yes, Mississippi. Hail from L.i. NY. First recollection of these newt card was then running on the Astoria Line I the BMT, back in about 1961-62 when they were fairly new and in serviced as "QT/BwayBrighton Local" train routes. They still had a bit of kale green/grey hue to them, as,they shared tracks with the much older AB Standards. Mom was seeing a family doctor there gets. the 30thAve & 39thAve stations off to the west. I rode these cars, by then well-used, badly graffitied, in 1982, when they shared tracks with just-as-bad R16s on the "J" Jamaica/Bway Brklyn Line, catching them @ the Van Siclen Ave/Fulton St station, going into downtown Manhattan cross the Wlmsbrg Bridge. Likes them, they accelerated a bit robustly compared to the heavier R16s. These cars, were used as parts donors before they were scrapped, since this era SMEE cars had, compatible pts for others, even IRT cars! FFarewell to them!!

I agree that this would be nice. However, after Hurricane Sandy, the Montague Street Tunnel which the R takes between Manhattan and Brooklyn was rebuilt with slightly angled walls, meaning trains without tapered upper sides, such as the R32 and R42, are unable to pass through the tunnel. Likely no B division car will ever receive a body style like that again.

Just blows my mind big time that nobody knew that the remaining R32s would retire nearly three decades after the R27s/R30s did. The reason is these cars weren’t stainless steel and the R32s were so that made them last 58 years until 2022. Stainless steel is a much sturdier material and the greatest thing is it doesn’t rust like aluminum steel does.

It's crazy how the IRT received thousands of these cars in different configurations, yet the BMT/IND only received the R16/27/30/30a cars.
The RedBirds R16 were delivered right to the Eastern Division...while the other units were southern Division cars.
    Christie st Connection changed that.
The cars were moved mostly to the Eastern Division, with 16s moved to Jamaica shops and yards for EE/GG services.
The 27/30s were an Eastern Division mainstay, but only ran on the QJ,RJ,JJ.
The LL/M operated the very last of the Standard cars, and the newly displaced R7/9 cars.
R9 completely took over the LL/M lines, and the following year, began running on the new KK .
The cars were basically moved from the QJ in 1972 and placed in M service when the line replaced the QJ along the Brighton line.
This was just a revival of the old Southern Division M Nassau St Express line, that operated as the Brighton Express from Chambers st ,over the Manhattan Bridge or the Nassau St cut.
The Redbird were completely off the New J line by the tail end of 1976..taken over by the R7/9 cars, while the L ran R16s.
1977 saw the Last original R units operated in J service ,and it's was done quietly.
The Redbird again became the mainstay of the Eastern Division, with a splash of 42s thrown in for air conditioning the system.
By the time the Archer subway opened, the Redbird cars were rebuilt into the red, black and silver hues .
    The 40m/42s were rebuilt,also,pressed into J/M /L and new Z service.
Afterwards, the Redbird cars were moved to the IND C line,to replace the Thunderbirds R10s.
The cars were joined by the R32 GOH to bring air conditioning to the line.
The Cars were retired shortly after the R10s...all were basically replaced by the 600 plus R68,68a car order.
    However, it was ill timed.
A severe car shortage happened immediately after the TA miscalculation...one that remained until the R160 cars arrived in full.
The 27,30,32 were my favorite cars.
Rugged, built to take the grueling day to day task of moving thousands of people.
I loved the way they moved.
It's was a sad day to see them fade away.

@ believer 5497, agree for most parts. Never unroll lately had i ever heard the post-war IND R10s being referred to as "Thunderbirds". This must be a recent moniker linked to them. I LOVED them about as much as their predecessors, the R9s. Ride them often in late 50s, early 60s as the "A" train. Great cars, well built, dynamic braking, kinda go in summer..yes, they were rather noisy, no bother to me! They accelerated bit better than the R9s, since each truck had 2 traction motors. Then that became the norm, as the SMEE era was ushered in!

It is better to take long than to not take any time. Here are some data that may be interesting to you. R27 8020-8135 were equipped with Westinghouse; R27 8136-8249 were equipped with General Electric. R30 8250-8411 were equipped with General Electric, and R30 8412-8569 were equipped with Westinghouse. Like the R26-R28 cars that were on the IRT, now the A Division, the R27 and R30 cars had a different type coupler at the number 2 end with a fourth air connector to allow straight air to travel trainline, thus supplying air from the compressor of the odd-numbered car to the even-numbered car, via straight air pipe.

@@1575murray I had not paid heed to the overall features of the R-26 and R-28 cars. Also, I remember in the old days of the IRT, some R-26 & R-28 cars, those that were originally equipped with General Electric multiple control systems, were mixed out of numeric sequence in the pairs. As you mentioned that during the renovation of those cars, the R-26 & R-28 cars were furnished with drawbars at their number 2 ends. Also, those cars were linked in numerical order in each pair. The R-27 & R-30 cars were just another phenomenon. The B-Division is more advanced than the A-Division when it comes to rolling stock. Thank you for writing to me.

    • @1575murray
      @1575murray 3 года назад +2

@@captainkeyboard1007 It was easier to re-link the R26 and R28 cars to their original mates as none of them were ever retired due to wrecks as were the R27 and R30 cars which had some wrecks with one R27 even receiving a replacement end from a wrecked R16. Some others were lost in a fire at Metropolitan Avenue which also destroyed the station platform. There were also some mismatched R33 pairs which were continued through GOH.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 2 года назад

They wouldn’t last until 2009 regardless. The cars were planned to run until 1995 at the minimum, until they retired early due to difficulties with installing AC systems without making the cars heavier. Also running then without AC systems is not an option either, considering how hot the Northeast gets during the summer months, which still rings true today.

    • @believer5497
      @believer5497 Год назад +1

      That's a big "If"...
      The cars were heavy weights.
Tipping the scales at 85,000 pounds.
If a 9 ton AC system was placed on them, they would be way too heavy for the system.
The 75ft cars are about 90,000 pounds, even with it's stainless steel exteriors and partial framing.
The Newer NTT cars are almost as heavy as the R27/30s, With HVAC..
      The cars were tired.
Not all of the R30s/30a cars were given the full GOH treatment.
Some were just cleaned up and painted.
At the end,all remaining cars were sent to the C line... and retired from service there.
The 32s were slowly coming over from the N, with both the A and C using the cars.
The rebuilt R38s and 44s were also placed in A and C service, with the 44 exclusive to the A since the mid 80s.
The H began using all available equipment out of Pitkin yard and Shops.
The MTA retired the old Red birds way too fast, because they believed that with new and rebuilt cars, there would be less breakdowns, increased reliability.. and less depending on " spares".
That proved to be short lived.
A car shortage soon developed,as the rebuilt cars turned out to be somewhat problematic, spending more time in the shops than anticipated.
Some relief was sent in the form of the R143 NTTs.
Built specifically for the Eastern Division, but more for the Canarsie CBTC signal system..these cars displaced the R40 and R40m cars to the Southern Division.
This gave the system a little more wriggle room, but with the increase in ridership, the relief was short lived.
The MTA decided to rush the next car order, and divide the contract between two builders to have all the cars in service within 5 to 7 years.
This was done to retire the 1960s rolling stock that was aging out, even after rebuilding.
The R160s were built to replace several car orders.
The R32(all except 200 plus cars),38,40,40m,42(all except 50 cars) and R44s were removed from service as the new R160s arrived.
      But Even this wasn't enough.
The MTA retired the R44s because of body rot.. which is why the older railcars were retained until replacement was possible.
The MTA did not have the funding for a third option order to replace the 44s, so they waited until funds were available to purchase the R179s.
The new cars were problematic from the very beginning.. and it took several years to get the cars in full working order
Once they were dependable, the MTA retired the 32/42 cars.
These cars were put in service on the A,C,J and Z lines starting in 2017, years late.
The R46,yeoman cars that served the system since 1975, were beginning to show their age, and were scheduled for replacement in the early 2010s.
The new R211s were designed in 2011...put out from building by 2019.
The first cars came in 2021.. testing took 18 months.. and placed in service on the A line.
The cars were removed from service almost a month later because of propulsion issues.
They are Still out of service, but many production cars have been delivered, even 15 Gangway equipped cars.
The 211s are expected to replace the 46s by 2028, with an additional contract to replace the 68s hot on their heels.
      The R27/30s are missed.
I wish the MTA would design a car that looks like the 27/30s, updated to NTT standards..
I guess the cars would look similar to the R142/188s...a little wider and longer.

The MTA does things wrong they should keep old trains that are in good condition and when they get in bad condition order new trains and scrap the old ones

    • @TRRailfan
      @TRRailfan  3 года назад

The MTA looks for the cheapest option. At that point they knew it would be expensive and challenging to install air conditioning on the cars and they knew ridership was on a decline, so they made the decision to retire them.

    • @TheRailLeaguer

They don’t do things wrong. Every car has a lifespan of 45-50 years so they are mandated to order new cars for replacement.
