- This week we dive head first into lowering the rear of an Air-Cooled VW with Cage 66 Adjustable Drop plates. I go into the weeds on explaining the process on this one. But I think it will help with the ability to understand what we are doing when lowering a VW. This is a popular upgrade for a lot of AC VW owners. The first step is acquiring quality parts, from reputable suppliers. With all the fly by night jokers out there, make sure you research who your products come from. Let's get into this...

Nicely done! one thing I like to do is set the adjuster half way, that way you can raise or lower the car a bit to fine tune it once its all done.
I just found your channel today, and I'm very impressed with your detailed and understandable content. Needless to say, I'll be a regular viewer. Yes, I've already subscribed 😂
Finely this makes sense Thank You! I've subscribed
I appreciate it Jack. 👊🏽
After watching numerous videos, very confusing I'll just leave it at that. And I've been a mechanic for 45 years
Just make sure your degrees match side to side to stay level. If you have adjustable plates you can fine tune the height with the screw.
Excellent video , I see all the effort put into this video , Thanks
Mad Scientist at work!
Respect!!!
Many thanks for this vid!! That's been the best video I've seen that properly explains the desired angles and preload on the rear spring plates. Just wondering though, what are the factory angles for the different vehicles? I have a '73 baywindow I will be fitting adjustable spring plates to and knowing the starting point would be really useful. ATB from the UK
I’m not sure what Bays factory angle is. It may be in a service manual. 21 * is a good starting point, but not sure if it’s correct. The Samba most likely has the answer.
Woaaaa!!! Excellent video. My Thing is already lowered yet I want a smoother ride. Great to learn about this.
Excellent instructional video. Thank you...
First time viewing one of your videos, great explanations, Thank you.
Glad you like them!
GREAT video well explained
That looks awesome!
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Bel-Metric in da house! Boy you produce excellent content!
Much appreciated!
Great informative video !
Glad it was helpful!
Looks great man. Love the videos.
How about a video on alignment a lowered split bus. The old school methods. Please and thank you. 👍✌🏽
I usually just square up the rear axles to the torsion housing. The front I tape measure align. 1/8” toe in. Next time we do one I’ll record it. 👍🏽
That would make a great video
Sweet
Great content!
Just found your channel. Where is your shop? I'm in CO.
Las Vegas NV.
7:00 You are wrong. There is no controversy.
The static preload of the spring plate on the ledge is meaningless. Once the car is on the ground, the spring plate isn't touching the ledge with either the stock plate or the drop plate. The torque on the torsion bars while riding down the road is exactly the same, regardless of what kind of spring plate you have.
Cool 👍🏽
There's always a critic among the crowd.
@@michaelboyer4188 The point of my comment was to indicate that the so-called drop plates are a SCAM. They don't do anything different than what the stock plates do. Since they cost you money, purchasing them is a scam.
Looking for answers on why my 1776 crank pulley is sling oil i don’t think it has a sand seal could it be something simple thanks
A pulley spitting oil is either inadequate breather, or too much ring blow by.
Check out what is relieving pressure now. If it does not exit to atmosphere with a little suction assist ( example: breather at oil fill connected to a stock oil bath) it will puke oil.
Thanks, cleaned breather box doesn’t seem to be leaking as bad. Should I consider a no machining seal and pulley if it continues to leak ? Thanks again for the content.
I’m not a fan of sand seals. If you have a breather box, do you have any negative pressure ( intake before carb) going to it? If not add one.
Also compression test the engine to see if blow by is creating your problem.
17:08 That's called lowering.
Dropped spring plates are a scam. They don't do anything different that the stock plate does when re-adjusted.
Did you have to adjust the adjusters? Or did it lay out without adjustment?
It was threaded about a 1/2” up. ( the adjuster stud). Andy wanted it a touch lower. So we took it down 1 full rotation.
Can we use this plate to lift the bug?
This particular plate has a drop in it. They do make lift plates.
@@the_Wagen Can you send the link of the seller? Thanks.
