Good, problem I had was that when you push the new bearing on it also pushes the drive shaft in, leaving not much thread showing when drum is back in place. Hence why it's important to use correct torque setting on drive shaft......to wind the shaft back out.
perfect timing, I was looking at the 59 and both sides have tell tale signs that the seals are both leaking. I probably should NOT flat tow that home 30 miles. Thanks !! And I think I did buy that same puller off the samba bceause getting that f n bearing off is a bear - I welded to my first one (62 bug). But we are to get smarter as time progresses.
Another great video! I noticed the rusty sludge started oozing out of the bottom of the new bearing. Where was the rusty sludge coming from? Is the residual sludge just so nominal that one need not worry about it? I'll be doing all this on my Beetle sometime in the next few months so I'll put this video and your comments in my how-to library.
It’s coming from the axle tube. I sprayed the bearing out with brake clean before putting the cap back on. Once I get a couple 100 miles on it, I’ll change the gear oil again. Only way to get the majority of the schmoo out with pulling the axle tube to wash it out. This video will NOT apply to your Super Beetle as you have an IRS rear end. I have a video on doing the rear suspension on my bay window Bus that is applicable to your Super. Good luck!
According to the Bentley manual for pre 59 cars, they don’t show the paper gasket for the carrier area. Would you use it anyway? Bentley only shows the O ring seals.
@@wickedwerks And when they are hard to fit on the shaft ,hammer more, come on, teach the right way, or not at all. Bound to be new guys/girls doing this.
So I got a question for you, sir, consider that burian. Was it under water? Why would you even consider cleaning it? Sort of throwing it in the garbage and replacing it with a new one. What the junk that was inside there, the lack of a proper lubricant. Those barren minds will consider them shot. The garbage thrum away put new ones in. They're really inexpensive. That thing was running around with basically water, dirty water in there. Don't reuse that my friend
Sometimes I do, most of the time I can’t be bothered 😂 in this case I just used simple green, hot water and a bristle brush. Hit the seal surfaces with 0000 steel wool.
Great video. I just picked up a 1960 VW and it’s making a weird sound from the rear. I found this video on RUclips and it’s exactly what mines is doing ruclips.net/user/shortsjDOTO4ipL8U?si=Uq1l8wZVukgbRqu9 Is that the same thing yours was doing? Thanks
Excellent video. The short length was perfect for the topic, so no apologies needed for the "short length." Well done!
Bought one of these bearing tools for my 356 recently too and was really impressed. cheap too. great video, thanks for taking the time to make it. Tim
@@klaxon68 thanks for watching!
Great How To Video. Im glad the tool worked as intended. I appreciate the shout out and link to the ad. Keep on Veedubbin!
Of course! Thanks for watching! ✌🏻
That puller is a game changer
Really is! He’s got a couple of helpful tools

What a fantastic puller I've spent hours getting those bearings out!!
Job well done, amazing how much easier it is with the correct tools. Have a good Christmas, bearded one.
Wow !! Like you I’ve never seen a leak like that ,good that job cane to you and fix . Happy new year
Happy Holidays sir. 🎄
This is the very next job I need to do on one of mine. Great video, subscribed. Many thanks

Yes.
Thanks. What sealer do you use on the paper gasket?

You need a hot plate. 50 years ago I owned a VW 3 finger outer axle bearing puller. I have lost it over the years wish I still owned it.
How Long you think Runs a bearing you heat up with a Open flame
Sounds like you're fighting the weather also
Yeah, it’s stupid cold and that propane heater doesn’t do much 😂
Great job !
Please send me the contact for the tool you used to pull the bearings from the axel. Thanks. Phil
@@PhilipCognito-k5s link is in the description.
Should you not have put plenty of bearing grease into the new bearing before sliding it onto the shaft?
No, bearing is lubricated by the transmission oil.
@@wickedwerks Are you sure? Reading on Rob and Dave's it says to grease the hell out of the bearing.
Where can I get one of those pullers
Link in description for an ad on thesamba.
hammering a new bearing into place, really.
If it can’t handle a few light taps with a hammer, it shouldn’t be on the car.
