How To Adjust Valves on an Aircooled VW Engine
This week we go over the simple steps to adjusting valves. I show you some of my tricks for finding the firing cylinder, and for getting that adjustment just right. This is a required maintenance that I usually perform every other oil change, unless I hear them getting noisy. #automobile #diyautorepair #diy #vw #volkswagen #maintenance

How to Compression Test A VW Engine, and Leak Down Test DIY
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Месяц назад
We got a motor that leaks...a lot...and it smokes. But the owner wants it re-sealed. Before we commit to that, we need to assess the overall health of the engine. We do that with a fundamental test that gives the most information of the internals. It's a compression test. Compression tests tell us what's happening in the combustion chamber. The test also reveals how balanced the engine is from ...

This week we go deep into a 64 Baja Bug. The motor is tired, the CV's are blown, and the front beam bushings are way past done. Luckily we have an Ace Racing 2332cc engine to replace the 1641cc. The CV's made a mess of everything around them so they get sorted. After a terrifying test drive we find the beam bushings are in need of replacing. This is a DIY follow along more than a tutorial, but ...

Installing a Gene Berg Linkage on a VW Bus
Not going to lie, I want to adjust some valves now!
😉🤣
You should not turn it clockwise.....Start at 1......Turn it counterclockwise 1234.... This way you do 1 and 2 on the same valve cover. Then do 3 and 4 on the next 1/2 rotation. 1234....
When I’m under a car both valve covers are removed. Not a big deal for me. But there are plenty of ways to skin a cat. 👍🏽
Love the fact you list the tools you used. Super helpful. Who makes those extra long feeler gauges? Is there any reason not to use steel rods on a completely stock motor? HATE valve clatter and would love to go 0 lash.
Feeler gauges are Matco. Chromoly is mainly used on performance engines. Zero lash is quieter, but can be harder on components since they are always in contact. My motor is zero lash, I drive it a lot with no issue. The key is getting the adjustment as close to perfect as possible
Another excellent and helpful video! Thank you so much.
Thanks! 🙌🏽
i liked the Spinning of the Push Rod trick 👌
It really helps with getting a “ feel” for the right resistance.
Great video and information. Best explanation.
Thanks 🙏🏼
George, I’ve said it before, but I love your content. 40 years of tinkering on these and I always learn something from you. Thanks for taking the time to do these vids so well, it’s really appreciated. I’m glad you’re busy. I’ve never been to the U.S. and I’ve always fancied it but tying it into a VW event,if the pennies allow, I’ll see if I can have One Crazy Weekend later in the year👍🏼
We have a lot of overseas visitors. Hope to meet you there. 🙌🏽
Compliments, nice having a real garage to do the work! Can't achieve the same process in a regular garage, no hydraulic lift!!!
I’m too old to roll around on the ground. 🤣
@the_Wagen EXACTLY!!!
I haven't heard of zero lash. It defiantly would cut down on noise. Thanks for the tips!
Zero lash will be too tight with stock push rods. Only for upgraded steel push rods. Expansion rates of the metals is why we use zero lash.
👍🇩🇪
Welcome back!
Been busy…
Literally exactly opposite of what me and your bro did on his 65 Rag in my driveway.. lol. great video!
63 Rag. 🙌🏽
👍
Just got halfway through doing this with my bus and realized you DON'T NEED TO TAKE THE MOTOR OUT! You can just pop the cover off like a valve cover and then remove the 2 screws holding the brushes and pull the armature straight out with the motor in the car. Yes you have to take it out in order to clean and regrease it like this guy did but that's not necessary. Save yourself an hour's worth of work and just pop the cover off with the motor in the car. Call me stupid but I wish someone else had made a comment like this before I started
My wipers had not been in use for 40 years. Figured they could use the extra attention. Plus I had to replace parts on the rods.
Great video and I absolutely love those Gene Berg linkages
Me too!
Nice video.. but dang sir.. that gay porn music is annoying 😂seriously
🤔
Now you gotta post some clips of you skating my guy.
🤣
Pretty sweet board.
I rode a Lance Mountain deck back in the day. Just got a Rodney Mullen deck to hang in the garage...always liked the skeleton design. Wasn't great on boards, was better on freestyle bikes.
We lived in apartments. No bikes for us. We skated. That’s why I have so many bikes now. 😉
you giving up working on VW's to skate pools now? 🤪 cool build. been wanting to put together a board like that myself, just something to cruise around on.
That’s my plan. No pools in my future unless I’m swimming 😉
Still working on VW’s. Just a lot of editing left on my current videos.
@@SuburbanHooligan build it. Lots of fun. Get softer wheels though to avoid getting stuck on rocks.
Just when you think you have see everything, you find another persons work. Amazing engine and electrical rectification on "The Tune Up".
Thank you.
Most enjoyable VW related videos. Always a lot of care and pride in your work, down to the finest details. Nice.
Thank you. 🙌🏽
Finally!!, someone explained the difference between linkages.
Sprinters look so good on a Type 3
Agreed
Hello from Christchurch New Zealand. Loving your videos
Thank you and hello from Las Vegas Nevada 🙌🏽
Can you tell me what spark plug temp you are running and what are the jet sizes in the carb. Thanks
I’ve shared this video to my group , nice video!
Thanks!
Excellent work, very clean you did a great job of explaining and recording the work, thanks.
Thanks
Assuming you don't have a switch for remote start, you can either jump the starter or just bump the key, correct?
Yes sir.
I want that set up on my nineteen sixty seven v w bug.😊
Nice! Is that a factory color?
Nope
Isn't your bearing cap and seal supposed to have the vent hole straight upwards?
Vent drains to the bottom.
Thank You. I looked it up and you are correct. I have to go back and change mine that I installed yesterday.lol. I installed EMPI disc brakes and thought the vent should go upward. Thank You for setting me straight Sir! Great Vids too
Can you tell us what size jets you used please
Carb came pre jet by Kompressor Haus.
Love the colabs!
Great tool selection, same tools here. Love mine if ya do enough bus stuff ya know....
Great video, Thanks! 🚌💨
Thank you.
Great Video - Hope your New Year was great - be safe driving in that Utah cold weather brother!!!!
Always. 👍🏽
Nice video😎👌
I'm always interested in these kits. Running a stock 1600 in a Karmann .Do I HAVE to drop the 1600 to install, and would I need to cut access ports for plug access down the road ? Thanks for any input you may have.
Not sure if this particular kit would fit the under the Decklid of a Ghia. Look on Kompressor Haus’ website.
@the_Wagen Thank you
These are the best VW how to vids on you tube!!.
Huge compliment. Thank you 🙏🏼
Really enjoyed this one, excellent work and content
Thank you.
What temp number did you use on spark plugs
I’m believe Kompressor Haus sent him the plugs in the kit. If not, I have his bus in the shop at the moment and can check.
Great explanation and video of the parts, disassembly and assembly. I will refer to your video if I ever need to re do the shaft. I replaced my throw out bearing and new clutch and pressure plate last week. My cross shaft is moving okay with no play in it. It has a yellow anodized bushing, so I guess it was replaced at some point. My Engine went in today.
The bronze bushing is the way to go. Sounds like that’s what you have. Most transaxle builders use the bronze ones. The silver one is a casing with rubber bushings inside that are junk.
Enjoyed that, really good content, I'm learning a lot watching your videos, thank you
Always enjoy watching yur builds. U are so methodical in your approach, clear in your ideas and the best part is you believe in investing in the right tools to get the right job output. I have learnt a lot as an amature builder of my bug from India.😊
Where you guys located at??
Las Vegas
I really need a surf wagon! I miss my VWs. We had type 1, 2, & 4, now we have none.😢
What are your gear ratios? What size tires?
3:88 R&P .82 4th 215/45/17
👏🏻
You are supposed to have the throttle plate wide open for a compression test. Maybe I missed it.
You are correct.
