I'm a joiner, but after watching your soldering videos I piped up a boiler... Not the gas... And when my guy came to do the gas run and commission he was super impressed with what I had done. No runs and polished up as you show here... So thanks 👍
I am a diy'er. Just soldered in the taps and toilet in the bathroom with Yorkshire fittings for the first time. Loved it and no leaks. Looking for the the Brasso now. Great tip. Thank you.
Im only a diy guy and i bought the super fire 2 because if these videos. Now I go around the new house replacing anything i can because I enjoy soldering so much 😅😅
Top man!
I'm just DIY, so not too experienced with soldering - I thought the heat mat I'd bought was a duff until you've just mentioned that here! I've only had to use it a couple of times, but wondered why it appeared to set on fire when it was meant to be heatproof!
at 2.03 you say "run it down by convection". Its gravity-assisted capillary action. Good video with excellent attention to detail
Thanks
No problem! Thanyou.
I don't use a heat mat. I use some 4mm thick aluminium plates. They take the heat away by reflecting and acting as a heat sink slowly heating up evenly. You can slide one behind a pipe in a corner against another at 90° so it protects all round and a U shaped cutout on one edge can slide over a pipe for when you don't want heat going further along past the joint for pipes going through partitions etc. Works brilliantly and is indestructible.
Love watching your videos mate and has given me confidence in at least trying out the smaller plumbing jobs around the home. One thing if I can ask, what brand of soldering wire would you suggest using, I've tried looking through your Amazon store and can't seem to find any you recommend. Thanks anyways and take care 👍
You’ve done a very nice job on that !!
I remember being awful at soldering in school. Solder just used to fly all over the place. Never understood how the solder tracks around the pipe so easily. Is that becasue the flux controls where the solder runs
Me too. And i thought need to move and apply the solder around the pipe circumference for a good seal.
I found a gas meter installation recently with pipes joined using green flux only and nothing else! Some guy had forgotten to solder the pipes he had prepared and fluxed, amazing. But it was actually gas tight believe it or not.
never underestimate the power of flux,...
I once forgot to solder a 54mm mains incomer that was at about 4 bar, and it didn't even weep...🤣
The brass munsin rings helped hold it together too...
Great video and great information
Best heat matts old school roofing slates or heat shields inside SD620 .vokera 20/80 or potterton lynx 1 😂😂 love the content pal. Showing me age though
Never thought of a roofing slate. Like that!
Does the flux 'pull' the solder around to the back of the pipe as well (near the wall) as it's difficult to reach otherwise.
Yes its called, Capillary action
Instead of a burn mat I use a piece of 6mm or 12mm cement board which I had kicking around in the garage
Good idea!
Absolute masterclass thank you
Oi oi alright James, thanks for the content you provide I love it and it has helped me no end both in college and on little plumbing jobs I have done for people.
Watching you previous video content I picked up the technique you shared for soldering vertical straight coupler joints, by the feeding solder in from the top and allowing it to run to the bottom which is banging my vertical joints look a lot better now.
I am not being a Karen I am just curious and I wanted to know your thoughts about this, I am currently doing the Plumbing science module of my Lvl 2 course and noticed that solder in a fitting can cause additional turbulence, do you think using this technique on a end feed tee fitting could increase turbulence in the fitting due to the size of the X dimension it has compared to a straight coupler?
A bit geeky I know ☺ but I am still learning so please don't take my query the wrong way, I've watched pretty much all of your content and love it.
Capillary not convection
The bigger the gob the better the job.
Nice
Mapp gas burns at like 2000c right? Most geat mats are rated for like 1200c some are even 600c so many plumbers are probably just ignoring that part of the equation
That does look spiffing. Bristol fashion etc.
Shiny is always a crowd pleaser and helps you get work
Don’t be silly I’ve never heard of a poor plumber😂😂 any chance of popping round and doing my knocker’s 👍brilliant video 👍👍👍👍
There's no point polishing it. It will have 10 coats of paint on it by the morning 😂
Haha! You know!
🙃 can people just not?
Overheated that massively
Where’s the Halloween special?
do these people put the entire roll of solder onto the fitting and blast it with a roofing torch? xD
It’s what you do when you run out of that last bit of pipe
@@steves1460 how is pipe running out mean people have poor heat control and excessive use of solder tho
That’s the worst soldering I’ve ever seen in my whole life I’m gunna be sick someone call an ambulance
Vomit in my hat!
👊💪👊
Been a plumber for 40 years , everyone works differently, I don’t see the point of the coupling, if you had measured properly you would have only one fitting to solder , secondly I don’t care if there is runs , as long as it doesn’t leak that’s all I’m worried about. Too many narcissists , vloggers ruining the trade , how many plumbers these days would be able to carry a cast iron bath up a flight of stairs on their own? Not many , how many can wipe a copper joint ? It’s all plastic shit and press , anyone can be a plumber now it’s not a trade anymore.
he needs all the money that he can get?he's not the only one!I'm a triple a plumber!it stands for-an absolute abomination!(don't let him anywhere near your plumbing, your daughter, your girlfriend, your house, car or your life!just don't let him anywhere near anything at all!full stop!)close brackets!
rubish mate
Two ‘B’s’ in RUBBISH you BUFFOON!
Sorry but that looks like a dogs dinner.
Get a pro press and throw all that soldering stuff in the bin !
no
Of all the ways to couple two bits of copper pipe, which lasts longest? I am guessing solder joints.
@@TheTW11 exactly at the end of the day press and push fit is based of the o ring sealing it. which after a while I would have thought anyways would wear down. I also think that I can get soldered fitting to look much neater than press to big and bulky personally but everything has it uses.
@@deano6017 instead of just a boiler swap, it's going to be a lot of fun replacing every single pressfit fitting in a house thats 30 or 40 years old soon...😮
@@DavesKoiPond haha yea that's going to be fun another issue with them is that you cant take them off once there on. soldered you can unsweat them and go from there. Press fit you cant solder close to them so by the time I have found somewhere to join on I might as well renew the entire place 🤣
Worst soldering video on RUclips.
Interesting, as a plumber of 30 years I prefer the cheaper propane ( blue ) gas for neat soldering work and I use a couple pieces of ceramic heat tile from science labs instead of glass heat matts
I've just finished my CCN1 in gas. I'd say I'm at the intermediate stage of experience, and I also prefer the blue gas bottle for soldering neatly. Mapp gas has its uses, where there is some water still in the pipe, but I fully agree with your comment.
@MohammedAli-1 Hi Mo yes you are right if I had a difficult connection , say a 28 mm pipe coming through a wall with residual water and the pipe was steaming then I would use mapp gas to get it hot enough to drive off the water. For most other applications propane is not only cheaper its easier to use because it's slightly slower , easier to controll to make a neat solder joint
@@Monaco-23 Yes exactly that. I've made the point about it being easier to control, and have always received a response equivalent to mapp gas being far superior. I've often felt that most people use mapp as it is the 'in thing', so reading your comment was a breath of fresh air tbh. 30 years is amazing BTW, I salute you.
Thanks
