What a damm shame , how could this happen to once a fine carrier , the good old days of flying are gone now , who knows what it will be like in a few months time , probably nothing at all as the company is bust and in ruins due to the present ANC government .
maaaan!! I really miss the A300 SAA!! I took it twice and I fell in love at first sight!! I will never forget it, and it was my first visit in an airplane cockpit also!
It's not just a matter of fiscus. Global competition and routes as well as fuel costs are also factors. That between all the horrible management and looting but I've read a book from experts in the aviation history that in these times it's much harder for airlines worldwide to be as profitable as they were back then.
@@iphoneupdate Well, I don't think you may have been old enough to remember son...we serviced and overalled the Aircraft ourselves, we trained our Pilots and Hosties inhouse. Boeing sat up and listened to what SAA Technicians and Pilots said. I know because I was were there...
Interesting the very narrow window in history this footage was taken in. Old South African colors on the livery, new South African flag in the registration.
I like the old livery. I believe this was back when JNB was still Jan Smuts. (ICAO was FAJS then). Then the government changed it because they didn't want airports named after political people. Then they changed their mind about that and you have what you have today. I still find myself calling it Jan Smuts a lot of the time. Old habits.
Will always be Jan Smuts to me. Change what you want it’s heritage remains from its place of birth and history since the first brick and concrete was laid as main hub to domestic and international flights. Name change can and will never eradicate this iconic gateway as part of the cornerstone and milestone achieved by those pioneers of its development and Success.
Will always be Jan Smuts. We had some American business partners coming out in the early 2000s, I told them to fly into Jan Smuts rather than Cape Town. A couple of days later they were still trying to find it…….For a time when I lived in Jo’burg you could see all three names on signposts around the Eastgate area.
Nothing beats the flying springbok .Was one of the finest airlines in the world Sadly like so many other things left to incompetents it has also been ruined .
Another WINNER JP :D Great video and once again thanks for sharing. Also I love the way that B732 wears those SAA colors @1:08. Real retro like paint scheme :)
It would have been between 1994 and 1997 as the new SA flag is visable on the side of the plane, yet the livery stil contains the Orange Springbok which was retired in 1997.
SAL, the only African airline to advertise in the National Geographic magazine. Who though handing the control of a profitable and proud airline over to African people will ensure widespread corruption and bankruptcy. Are there any other companies that improved after such hand overs?

Heavy is when a plane is above a certain weight. As the heavier the aircraft is, the greater the wake turbulence, the ATC will need to increase the distance between aircrafts onlanding and take off to mitigate wake turbulence for the flowing aircraft.
It is commonly referring to the weight of the aircraft, typically 136000kg (300000 lb) or more. Technically it is the classification of the wake turbulence left behind the aircraft as it moves at high speed.

Usually it means a large aircraft, I think most (if not all) of the time it means a wide-body aircraft.
Yes it is still used.
It means an aircraft (presumably a widebody) that is more than 250,000 pounds. In Laymans terms, it is a B767 and larger.
Amazing
Suid Afrikaanse Lugsdiens. South African Airways in Afrikaans. It had SAA on one side and SAL on the other side.

Oh those planes were painted with apartheid livery but have post-apartheid flags on them
Transition period between Apartheid and post Apartheid, so SAA had not upgraded its colours (or branding) to the cool new flag.
