Everyone should pay attention to your attention for detail! An expert match competition rifle shooter does not buy his loads off of a shelf... he builds his own! I've actually enjoyed watching this. I like the technical side of this so we can do this for accuracy when you can afford to do things like this. You are so right about fletching all your arrows the same. I've found that this is the best way to straighten out the flight early.
Thank you for posting such an in depth video of your arrow building process!! The best start to finish resource I've found and I love seeing someone striving for perfection (even if some people say it doesn't matter).
Here is a step by step for you guys that might not have a lot of time, therefore just don't want to chug through 2 hours of content. Or, if you're not visual and can determine how to do something based off of word instruction. 1. Determine what game you will be hunting, do you want a super fast arrow that is light or an arrow that is on the heavier side offering more penetration for larger animals. (for those target archers, try to think what you want for 3d, field, indoor or outdoor) 2. Checking the spine tolerances, you can use a tester like the RAM, this is so you don't have a 300 spine in a box of 200s for example. (Cheaper arrows need these steps more than cheaper ones!) 3. Spin the arrows, then you can mark the ends with more wobble and cut those ends to get a straighter shaft(contrary to what he said in the video of arrow companies hating what he is "telling" the audience, Gold Tip already released this information long before this was out). 4. Determine your arrow length. He likes 1/2 to a quarter inch in front of the rest. Be careful if you're shooting a long insert outsert system like a system that Black Eagle offers goes over the arrow. If you're switching lighted nocks to normal nocks and want the right arrow length, save your money for the dozen and go off the 1/2 to a 1/4 inch in front of the rest with the SHORTER throat. This way, when you base your arrow length on the shorter nock, you aren't having your broadheads contacting the rest. If your broadhead blades are also coming back, then you need to add more length to your arrow so that way your blades aren't in contact with the rest. 5. Cut your shafts with an arrow saw (some use a Dremel rotating cutting tool if they want a DIY arrow cutting tool), Josh also recommends in this part to include about an 1/8 of an inch extra or so because squaring your arrow will get rid of some carbon. 6. Square your arrow using a squaring tool or what Josh said is a "deep six tapering tool". The reason you do this is so that your points and inserts are squared and that they aren't at an erratic angle. This is IMPORTANT if you use broadheads!!!!!!! 7. Use that same spine tester to find the stiff side of the shaft, all carbon arrows have a stiff side and a weak side. You could technically do this with nock tuning, but the reason you do this is so that you have consistent reactions among all of your arrows, your odd color vane will be on the stiff side and those using 4 fletch will want the stiff side up. (If you want to skip this step, Victory arrows are spine aligned for you, just give a simple flex up and down and the stiffest will be pretty easy to find compared to not having the mark with using other brands.) 8. Weigh everything...Literally! Take your shafts and group them lightest to heaviest with a grain scale, then do the same to organize vanes and points. When you do this, you are cutting your weight tolerances and are therefore getting more consistent arrows, leading to more accuracy at longer distance (most of these steps with trying to maximize straightness and get everything to tight tolerances are for long distance shots 80 yards and farther) 9. Get your components out, and start putting them together using opposites. For example, use light vanes and light points with a heavy shaft, use heavy vanes and heavy points with light shafts to get an even weight. If you have a medium weight shaft, combine that with a medium weight point and medium weight vanes. 10. BEFORE YOU FLETCH! Clean your shafts with acetone (avoid the nocks and the cresting/label, the acetone will eat through that). If you can't get acetone, denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol also work, just keep in mind that both of those still apply to damaging the nocks. Doing this assures that you get a good bond between the shaft and your vanes, try to avoid touching the shaft after doing this to avoid putting the oils on your hands on the shaft. 11. Start fletching! 4 fletch configurations need the stiff side in the middle of the 2 vanes with the stiff side facing up, 3 fletching need the odd color vane (called the cock vane) on that stiff line (recurves, have your cock vanes facing away from the riser, compounds, have your cock vane facing up). 12. Do what's called tipping and tailing, take your fletching glue (if you don't have any use some generic superglue) and put a dab of glue on the tips of the vanes and on the tail ends of the vanes, your vanes won't be flying off anytime soon You're done! Sorry this comment was long, but it should not be taking you 2 hours to read this, I don't know where the heck "25" steps came from, you only really need to do 12 (unless if I combined multiple steps, or if Josh included his gazillion examples). I thought I was good at building my own arrows...until I watched this. So many things that seem so obvious now that you've pointed them out. This is the best arrow building video out there. Blew my mind. Now I have to start from scratch and rebuild my whole setup.
There is so much to all of this and you do a great job of explaining! Well worth my time. I’m shooting 76lbs @ 32” Draw length. I have noticed every little bit helps.
Have a love hate relationship with these types of videos. I love em cause they’re awesome and super informative, but hate em cause they sometimes tell me my setup is a little off and it itches me until I finally cave in and spend ridiculous amounts of money😂😂. Arrows arent cheap people😳😳💰💰
The fact that you put this effort and time into your arrows just shows the respect you have for archery and the game your pursue. Tim gillinham builds his set ups very similar. I know how mad I get when I break a factory fletched arrow that I slapped a field tip on. I can't imagine how mad you get after breaking an arrow you put all this work into. Bravo for being a master of your craft.
The attention to detail seemed unnecessary in the beginning, but watching the video all the way to the end blew me away that your arrows are so close to being identical. Very cool video.
It doesn’t really make a difference if they are within 10 grains.. just fyi. I watched the whole video and experimented all week. Basically shoot identical out to 80 yards
Would be nice if someone made a rig for an experiment - bolt the bow into a solid fixture and shoot indoor - probably 70yards. See to what extent it becomes true
Ordered custom cut arrows from Lancaster archery, under a 1.5 grain difference between the 12 arrows ordered. This info is amazing, but you don’t have to go this in depth for arrows to weigh damn near identical

Josh, I am 62 years old and just now getting back into archery after some 10 years completely out of hunting all together. My bow is ordered, as well as a full complement of gear to get me shooting again. It is an "APA BLACK MAMBA 35". I am Canadian so naturally, I went with the best Canada has to offer and their's only one to order from, APA! It is strictly for 3-D as I became a "vegetable" years ago. Lol. I ordered my Easton arrows uncut as I hope to build my own. This video you put together on building the most accurate arrows ever, is sooo helpful. I only wish I had all the tools you have for cutting, tapering, squaring, weighing etc. Wish you were my neighbor, lol. Anyway, what an awesome instructional video this is. This is the most comprehensive arrow building video I have ever seen. Two ideas: silver sharpie on it ends prior to grinding it square...so you know you have it square when silver disappears. Other thing is cleaning the inside of the arrow with a acetone or denatured alcohol prior to gluing inserts. Could you do a comprehensive tuning video just like this one!!!! That would be amazing. Best arrow building video I've seen (and seen a few). Thanks for this video, it's really valuable information for anyone into archery. I finished a setup with some Easton Axis 5mm today and they are within 0.4 grains tolerance, just amazing! I wasn't expecting the axis to be that consistent to be honest
Honestly don't know why this video doesn't have more views than 200k. I'm not a professional but I've been building my own arrows for roughly 4 years and I followed all of these steps this year and I've never had more consistent and more accurate arrows. Everything is better about them, more dead in the hand.. Quieter and proper broadhead flight.. Get the RANCH FAIRY test kit from ethic's archery..

@@NortheastWoodsman I'll give you that he's eccentric, no doubt but he backs up everything he's saying with evidence. I have since switched from 380 grain "twizzlers" to 550 grain and 15% FOC and I'm more accurate, quieter shooting bow, more dead in the hand and I have more shots that just cooperate. Plus with a single bevel, cut on contact broadhead, no other system can compare with penetration and broadhead flight. Good luck getting your broadheads to group the same spot as your field points with a 350 grain, 400 spine arrow. Also, I never had as good results bare shaft paper tuning as when I followed Ashby's method more so than light weight arrows.. SO......
@@NortheastWoodsman I find it interesting to think that bowhunting follows concepts that you must use the lightest weights possible because it's speed that matters. If the diameter of the cutting surface is the same, why is it wrong to use heavy FOC arrows to provide an ethical clean kill. This is what you call the worst thing to happen to bowhunting. It seems like taking a 55 grain .223 bullet and loading it for a .308.
@@briansaeger5580 no you find the best overall arrow for your setup which is a happy medium not a ranch fairy tomahawk. Your comparison makes no sense. The real comparison would be using a 150gr in a .30-06 or a 180gr... both will get the job done... your clean ethical kill comes from shot placement and nothing else.
This is a great video, probably the best on arrow building. Wow. This is one of the keys to Josh's long shots. When people see someone make an 80 - 90 or longer shot they think it is poor hunting because they 1, don't train for it themselves and 2 don't take this time to make certain all the specs of their entire set up is right on. No, it’s still bad “hunting.” You can’t build wind at range, nor animal reaction over time when talking slow projectiles, etc., etc., etc. Hunt or play video games, they aren’t the same thing.
You have opened my eyes on arrows been shooting since I was 6 compound since I was 10. Never gave arrows so much thought always have had a good shot group but as I get older Im not as good as I once was or its my current bow. Thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, I just started bowhunting, hunting in general, and shooting a bow last year, last time i picked up any bow was in high school age and im 33 now. This video is truly aligning with how i feel about building arrows, and it has helped me immensely. I even went as far as taking apart my broadheads (Zeus) and weighing each component from them, and assembling them as close to all the same as possible. With this, ive been able to get my arrows all within about 1 to just under 2 grains apart.

I bareshaft tuned 1 unfleched arrow with another fleched from the new batch. Now i have to shave the fletching and refletch because i shot threw the vanes twice at 20 yds. Thanks brother
I have hand loaded all of my own ammo for a long time now and just recently started bow hunting last year. Watching this entire process of making calculations and actually building these arrows has definitely got me wanting to dive deeper into this sport. Great video and information. Awesome tutorial along with techy info for the guys who like to be technical 👍🏻I’ve been wondering about switching to using hot melt myself and now I know I’m gonna do it. Too many of my arrows get thrown away because the outsert gets a wobble to it and there’s no repair that can be done. Thanks again!!
Josh, I saw one of your older videos a couple years ago that I can’t find now about bareshaft tuning where you shot through your house like 20 yards and it impacted perfectly. My bareshaft through paper is perfect, but at 20 yards it impacts the target at an angle, not straight on. I am pretty far along in my bow/arrow tuning Jedi training, but need more from you Jedi master. Bow tuning, and bareshaft arrow tuning videos man - my two requests!
Great video learned a lot about building arrows that I never knew. Great instructor on subject teaches how to blue print you arrows like in engineering. Instructor puts in a lot of effort into video to cover subject correctly, knows how to interact with audience to make great video.

Absolutely the best arrow build I've seen to date. I've actually watched it about a dozen times and reference it when I'm building my arrows. I suffer from the same level of OCD you do, but you made it easy and provided the fast track road map instead of taking years of mistakes to learn. I'm also going to steal the layout for your basement dungeon man cave bow shop! Freaking awesome! Next house will have something similar.
This was very helpful as I dig into my first build. One thing I would like to see is you explain more about tuning between regular nocks and lighted nocks. Not everyone can incorporate them into every arrow so understanding how you practice with one and then ensure you’re ready for hunting with the lighted nocks would be great.

Wow ! I don't really shoot anymore, but i am still fascinated with archery, and i must say i have never seen anyone pay so much attention to detail and perfection of their arrows. Your arrows are works of art man, and i admire your dedication to producing the very best in the industry.
I don't think brain surgeons are this meticulous. I have so many more reasons now to blame the gear. "Yea these vanes are definitely different weights and it's pulling me off target".

Wow. I learned so much in this one video! Thanks for that! I really appreciate that you’ve explained it f I’m all points view so different types of archers in any budget range can see the value if the content and apply it to their own unique application. Biggest take away for me (being on a “dad budget” with an additional young archer in the house) was that our middle of that road and budget minded equipment requires much more scrutiny of this kind due to its inherent high variables. So even though you’re discussing your own high end components as examples, you’ve done a great job of explaining why this practice is even more important for the average archer to adopt into their routine to achieve maximum accuracy control. I’d have to admit that my eyes are open to arrows like never before. Thanks for sharing!
Josh I like all this but when it comes to the head, you shouldn’t try to match heavy to light arrows and light to heavy, because if a arrow is light and you use a heavier point, the arrow will flex differently than the next one that has the lighter head. This will cause more variance down range than differences in weight will. What I would do is lighten the sever or whatever head you are using by threading a nut onto the head and using a file remove a little metal from the back of the head, until they all match. If you can’t get them to match then buy more and weight sort them. This could cost a little, but you can’t build a 100 yard killing machine cheaply. Weight matching arrow to vanes to get arrows that weigh the same is fine because the vanes won’t cause the spine to flex more and less. The front of center items, (insert, head) will. Love your videos.
Leland Holton well you missed my whole point, he’s fine tuning the arrows for long range accuracy and if the heads don’t weigh the same the aroows will flex differently and that will effect long range ups and downs more than all the other measures he’s taking

I think this video is very informative. Especially if you are expecting to take long range shots. And if so I think it's very very very important to practice in different scenarios like up hill, down hill and through small windows of brush. The bow or crossbow that is launching the arrow doesn't play as big a factor as the arrows that you shoot. Arrows are at the core of archery in my opinion.
I also think this is good for those target shooters, just ignore everything on broadheads and target shooters will be fine! Thanks for making this, you have made a great resource for arrows for the community!

I find your video very interesting. I have great respect for your thorough knowledge and professionalism on arrow building. Well, I'm not a long range hunter to prepare arrows so metriculously as you do. In the first place I do not have the equipments you have. I normally shoot between 60 to 90 ft and my bow is maximum 70lbs. My draw length 28/29 inches. So I shoot with a 26/27 inch 500 sp arrows. I use 3 blade broadhead which I carefully align with the vanes. I feel that having a shorter, lighter and faster arrow is most effective. And the bow grip must be comfortable for accuracy. Thank you very much for your educational video.
Great video, you do great work sir! Just starting out with building my own areas after moving and not being close to a pro shop anymore--plus I like working on my own set ups. Just the advice of building a single arrow and tuning fully probably saved me a couple hundred bucks easy--and now I can justify buying the nose button! Excited to try it out!

(If you want to skip this step, Victory arrows are spine aligned for you, just give a simple flex up and down and the stiffest will be pretty easy to find compared to not having the mark with using other brands.)
8. Weigh everything...Literally! Take your shafts and group them lightest to heaviest with a grain scale, then do the same to organize vanes and points. When you do this, you are cutting your weight tolerances and are therefore getting more consistent arrows, leading to more accuracy at longer distance (most of these steps with trying to maximize straightness and get everything to tight tolerances are for long distance shots 80 yards and farther)
9. Get your components out, and start putting them together using opposites. For example, use light vanes and light points with a heavy shaft, use heavy vanes and heavy points with light shafts to get an even weight. If you have a medium weight shaft, combine that with a medium weight point and medium weight vanes.
10. BEFORE YOU FLETCH! Clean your shafts with acetone (avoid the nocks and the cresting/label, the acetone will eat through that). If you can't get acetone, denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol also work, just keep in mind that both of those still apply to damaging the nocks. Doing this assures that you get a good bond between the shaft and your vanes, try to avoid touching the shaft after doing this to avoid putting the oils on your hands on the shaft.
11. Start fletching! 4 fletch configurations need the stiff side in the middle of the 2 vanes with the stiff side facing up, 3 fletching need the odd color vane (called the cock vane) on that stiff line (recurves, have your cock vanes facing away from the riser, compounds, have your cock vane facing up).
12. Do what's called tipping and tailing, take your fletching glue (if you don't have any use some generic superglue) and put a dab of glue on the tips of the vanes and on the tail ends of the vanes, your vanes won't be flying off anytime soon

Sorry this comment was long, but it should not be taking you 2 hours to read this, I don't know where the heck "25" steps came from, you only really need to do 12 (unless if I combined multiple steps, or if Josh included his gazillion examples). Have a love hate relationship with these types of videos. I love em cause they’re awesome and super informative, but hate em cause they sometimes tell me my setup is a little off and it itches me until I finally cave in and spend ridiculous amounts of money😂😂. Arrows arent cheap people😳😳💰💰
The fact that you put this effort and time into your arrows just shows the respect you have for archery and the game your pursue. Tim gillinham builds his set ups very similar. Ordered custom cut arrows from Lancaster archery, under a 1.5 grain difference between the 12 arrows ordered. This info is amazing, but you don’t have to go this in depth for arrows to weigh damn near identical

Josh, I am 62 years old and just now getting back into archery after some 10 years completely out of hunting all together.
My bow is ordered, as well as a full complement of gear to get me shooting again. It is an "APA BLACK MAMBA 35". I am Canadian so naturally, I went with the best Canada has to offer and their's only one to order from, APA! It is strictly for 3-D as I became a "vegetable" years ago. Lol.
I ordered my Easton arrows uncut as I hope to build my own. This video you put together on building the most accurate arrows ever, is sooo helpful. I only wish I had all the tools you have for cutting, tapering, squaring, weighing etc. Wish you were my neighbor, lol.

This is the most comprehensive arrow building video I have ever seen. Two ideas: silver sharpie on it ends prior to grinding it square...so you know you have it square when silver disappears. Other thing is cleaning the inside of the arrow with a acetone or denatured alcohol prior to gluing inserts.

I finished a setup with some Easton Axis 5mm today and they are within 0.4 grains tolerance, just amazing! I wasn't expecting the axis to be that consistent to be honest

Nahhh, this guy has never heard of the RANCH FAIRY obviously... He revolutionized arrow building with DR. ED ASHBY'S research on higher grain weight and 18%+ FOC... Everything is better about them, more dead in the hand.. Quieter and proper broadhead flight.. Get the RANCH FAIRY test kit from ethic's archery..

@@NortheastWoodsman I'll give you that he's eccentric, no doubt but he backs up everything he's saying with evidence. I have since switched from 380 grain "twizzlers" to 550 grain and 15% FOC and I'm more accurate, quieter shooting bow, more dead in the hand and I have more shots that just cooperate. Plus with a single bevel, cut on contact broadhead, no other system can compare with penetration and broadhead flight. Good luck getting your broadheads to group the same spot as your field points with a 350 grain, 400 spine arrow. Also, I never had as good results bare shaft paper tuning as when I followed Ashby's method more so than light weight arrows.. SO......
@@NortheastWoodsman I find it interesting to think that bowhunting follows concepts that you must use the lightest weights possible because it's speed that matters. If the diameter of the cutting surface is the same, why is it wrong to use heavy FOC arrows to provide an ethical clean kill. This is what you call the worst thing to happen to bowhunting.
It seems like taking a 55 grain .223 bullet and loading it for a .308.
@@briansaeger5580 no you find the best overall arrow for your setup which is a happy medium not a ranch fairy tomahawk. Your comparison makes no sense. The real comparison would be using a 150gr in a .30-06 or a 180gr... both will get the job done... your clean ethical kill comes from shot placement and nothing else.

This is a great video, probably the best on arrow building. Wow. This is one of the keys to Josh's long shots. When people see someone make an 80 - 90 or longer shot they think it is poor hunting because they 1, don't train for it themselves and 2 don't take this time to make certain all the specs of their entire set up is right on. No, it’s still bad “hunting.” You can’t build wind at range, nor animal reaction over time when talking slow projectiles, etc., etc., etc. Hunt or play video games, they aren’t the same thing.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video, I just started bowhunting, hunting in general, and shooting a bow last year, last time i picked up any bow was in high school age and im 33 now.
This video is truly aligning with how i feel about building arrows, and it has helped me immensely. I even went as far as taking apart my broadheads (Zeus) and weighing each component from them, and assembling them as close to all the same as possible. With this, ive been able to get my arrows all within about 1 to just under 2 grains apart.

I bareshaft tuned 1 unfleched arrow with another fleched from the new batch. Now i have to shave the fletching and refletch because i shot threw the vanes twice at 20 yds. Thanks brother

Josh, I saw one of your older videos a couple years ago that I can’t find now about bareshaft tuning where you shot through your house like 20 yards and it impacted perfectly. My bareshaft through paper is perfect, but at 20 yards it impacts the target at an angle, not straight on. I am pretty far along in my bow/arrow tuning Jedi training, but need more from you Jedi master. Bow tuning, and bareshaft arrow tuning videos man - my two requests!

Great video learned a lot about building arrows that I never knew. Great instructor on subject teaches how to blue print you arrows like in engineering. Instructor puts in a lot of effort into video to cover subject correctly, knows how to interact with audience to make great video.

Absolutely the best arrow build I've seen to date. I've actually watched it about a dozen times and reference it when I'm building my arrows. I suffer from the same level of OCD you do, but you made it easy and provided the fast track road map instead of taking years of mistakes to learn. I'm also going to steal the layout for your basement dungeon man cave bow shop! Freaking awesome! Next house will have something similar.

This was very helpful as I dig into my first build. One thing I would like to see is you explain more about tuning between regular nocks and lighted nocks. Not everyone can incorporate them into every arrow so understanding how you practice with one and then ensure you’re ready for hunting with the lighted nocks would be great.

I don't think brain surgeons are this meticulous. I have so many more reasons now to blame the gear. "Yea these vanes are definitely different weights and it's pulling me off target".

I really appreciate that you’ve explained it f I’m all points view so different types of archers in any budget range can see the value if the content and apply it to their own unique application. Biggest take away for me (being on a “dad budget” with an additional young archer in the house) was that our middle of that road and budget minded equipment requires much more scrutiny of this kind due to its inherent high variables. So even though you’re discussing your own high end components as examples, you’ve done a great job of explaining why this practice is even more important for the average archer to adopt into their routine to achieve maximum accuracy control. I’d have to admit that my eyes are open to arrows like never before. Thanks for sharing!

Josh I like all this but when it comes to the head, you shouldn’t try to match heavy to light arrows and light to heavy, because if a arrow is light and you use a heavier point, the arrow will flex differently than the next one that has the lighter head. This will cause more variance down range than differences in weight will. What I would do is lighten the sever or whatever head you are using by threading a nut onto the head and using a file remove a little metal from the back of the head, until they all match. If you can’t get them to match then buy more and weight sort them. This could cost a little, but you can’t build a 100 yard killing machine cheaply. Weight matching arrow to vanes to get arrows that weigh the same is fine because the vanes won’t cause the spine to flex more and less. The front of center items, (insert, head) will. Love your videos.
Coffeeman Insanity light arrow with heavy tip just magnifies the archers paradox. If the arrow shaft spine is matched for the force it’ll be fine.
Leland Holton well you missed my whole point, he’s fine tuning the arrows for long range accuracy and if the heads don’t weigh the same the aroows will flex differently and that will effect long range ups and downs more than all the other measures he’s taking

I think this video is very informative. Especially if you are expecting to take long range shots. And if so I think it's very very very important to practice in different scenarios like up hill, down hill and through small windows of brush. The bow or crossbow that is launching the arrow doesn't play as big a factor as the arrows that you shoot. Arrows are at the core of archery in my opinion.
I also think this is good for those target shooters, just ignore everything on broadheads and target shooters will be fine! Thanks for making this, you have made a great resource for arrows for the community!

I find your video very interesting. I have great respect for your thorough knowledge and professionalism on arrow building. Well, I'm not a long range hunter to prepare arrows so metriculously as you do. In the first place I do not have the equipments you have. I normally shoot between 60 to 90 ft and my bow is maximum 70lbs. My draw length 28/29 inches. So I shoot with a 26/27 inch 500 sp arrows. I use 3 blade broadhead which I carefully align with the vanes. I feel that having a shorter, lighter and faster arrow is most effective. And the bow grip must be comfortable for accuracy. Thank you very much for your educational video.
