I had this surgery done 19 years ago due to a massive underbyte. The worst part about it was recovery and getting used to a new appearance. Eventhoug my surgery thank god went good, i have to get used to my new appearance, new expressions, smile and also get used to the implants. Your appearance will change for the better. Soo make sure to take lots of pictures, videos of your current appearance before the surgery. Its been 19 years aince i had mines done and thank God im Fine.
Ok but does it mess up the resting position of your teeth..like how i feel like my teeth currently close like a puzzle..jow does it feel with them pushing my jaw back
For anyone scared about the surgery: I just had this surgery (to correct my 10mm overbite) last week Wednesday and they put you to sleep and trust me when I say you can’t feel a thing. You’re very swollen afterwards and drugged up when you’re in the hospital but they make it so the pain is bearable. I am still swollen now and in pain but it’s worth it in the long run.
I was one of the first patients to have this surgery in the UK and it's changed my life for the better thank you to my maxillofacial surgeon and dentist xxxx
@@positivevibesveda I got this surgery back in 2002 when I was 18 years old I had to ware surgical fixed brace for five years ready for the procedure the operation to 5 or 6 hours as they had to reposition the whole of my bottom jaw so I would have a better bite.my life before this op was hell as I had a lot of abuse for having a big producing chin but since having this my life is alot better now.
I had 2 jaw surgeries in 2014 and 2015. The healing process is annoying due to swelling (cheeks) and having to eat through a straw for 6 weeks but no pain or extreme discomfort at all. The result now is beautiful and I'm extremely glad I did it.
Hi, friends! So I had this surgery almost two years ago. I had what my surgeon called "the worst case of underbite he's ever seen", and an open bite too. If you follow your doctor's instructions, recovery is incredibly chill. There are painful moments, but you will probably get medication prescribed to you. Also ask your doctor about wiring your mouth shut. There are more modern techniques that don't require it (I, for example, didn't get mine wired). Having only liquid food is not that bad, unless you have soup or something haha. Biting for the first few times can be kind of painful and weird, because you jaw muscles kinda forget what they are doing. There's also a chance you might still be numb. My chin is still numb to this day, but mostly because my surgery was very aggressive, since my case was severe. Most cases heal sooner. What I do recommend is a bit unusual: Therapy. It's very, very weird to see your new face, especially when your swelling starts to go down and you look different every day. It's very uncanny, to say the least. I am still getting used to it, but I don't regret the surgery at all. I stopped snoring, I stopped choking for no reason, my posture has gotten better (surpringly), and my breathing has gotten so much better that I finally get why people like scented candles! The health benefits alone overshadow everything else.
Can anyone tell me honestly how long time it wil take to full recovery and return in normal life ... I am suffering from small jaw 😔😔😔 and so, my lower teeth are misaligned .??? Please reply me .. i am waiting for your suggestion.
@@amiyodas6908 hello hun it depends which jaw is getting broken top or bottom. For example mine was the bottom, it toke 2 months or more for healing for me, but I also healed incorrectly due to a assault while in recovering as well. But I believe the usual is 8 weeks as a starting point.
I got this surgery 2 months ago...I can’t tell you how glad I am that I have gotten it!!! I had a receded jaw and an open bite, and only my back molars touched. My bite is absolutely incredible and I can finally touch my front teeth!
@@nicolehernandez1291 My profile has definitely changed, and my smile is awesome. Before you could only see my front teeth, but now you can see both. It is definitely worth getting. I had corn for the first time a week ago since my surgery, and it was incredible. It hasn’t changed a lot, but slightly noticeable.
I had this surgery done about 4 years ago due to a massive underbite.... recovery was so god awful but this surgery changed my life for the better. Best decision I’ve ever made
I was always bullied because of my long chin and my parents were one of them. So I want to adjust it to boost my confidence. I'll endure it no matter how painful it may be. this is one of my dreams. i need this surgery . I wish I could get it As Soon As Possible.
Meet and go to different dentist and ask for reference. Don’t be scared or bothered and just do it. U will always get more money or days to live but not the time that passed. Don’t worry and go now. I went late and I regret not visiting doctor earlier. U will at least know what u need to get done and where to start off with. Good luck
My 14yo son just had this done yesterday in Australia for his overbite. Braces stayed on during surgery Top jaw moved back 8mm Bottom jaw required to be moved forward 4mm to achieve best alignment. 4 wisdom teeth removed Chin bone cut and re- positioned. Bone grafts from same site. Had it all done at once in a private hospital. Total Cost in private hospital was about $28k Braces about $8k No health insurance Hardly any pain as plenty of meds in hospital and to take home. One night stay in hospital Lots of swelling, but not as bad as I expected. can only have liquid food through a straw / syringe for 6 weeks. Can only open mouth enough to fit a straw in as the braces have temporary elastics at the back to keep his jaw shut to heal. Ice packs on cheeks for a week or more to reduce swelling. No sports for 2 months Was able to talk / mumble within 24 hours. He is doing really well, a bit weak and tired but minimal pain, mainly just a lot of discomfort.
un disclosed recovery is doing well :) it’s a little slow and just today i got the elastics that hold my jaw shut replaced with slightly weaker elastics. i don’t have any pain but in case you plan on getting this surgery, you should note that due to swelling and having a plastic tube down your throat during surgery, you might have to deal with a sore throat and maybe achy ears for a few days afterwards. but right now, 13 days after my surgery, i can tell you there is no pain and i am not taking anymore meds. i also can’t feel the metal connector at all. it’s worth mentioning that jaw surgery is different for everyone but this has been my experience so far :)
Val Salas thank you so, so much. I’m 16, and have a pretty serious underbite. Not as serious to the point I look like a bulldog, but it’s only fixable with surgery (so says my orthodontist). I’ve never been able to bite correctly my whole life, and I’m eager to get this surgery done ASAP! I was told I’d get it done once I stopped growing, which is 18. I ask how recovery went because it seems like quite a restructuring of the jaw. I just want to get this done and be able to smile. Thank you again for your reply!
un disclosed no problem at all! this surgery is definitely a huge leap from wisdom teeth removal but most people i have come across say it was completely worth it in the end. i can relate to wanting to get it as soon as possible but my advice is just enjoy yourself now. especially eating and being able to function for the most part. as grateful as i am for being able to finally get this surgery, the recovery does take time. simply be patient and enjoy the present because the day you can finally get your surgery will arrive soon enough :)
I once had a bad cross bite in my 30s and had to have surgery done to correct it but before I could get it done, I needed to have braces put on to get my teeth straightened. After the surgery, my jaw had to be wired shut for around six weeks and all my food had to be osterized so I could drink my meals. It was a bit of a process but I am glad I had it done.
It's not like you have to watch them do the surgery. If you are in the hands of a good maxillofacial surgeon who has a reputation, the probability of something going wrong is probably less than 1% in even the most extreme cases. Some of these guys are so fucking good at what they do and they make a boatload of cash per year, literally. While I would never get something like a Lefort III osteotomy, I would be fairly confident in a doctor performing a lefort I osteotomy on me. Healing time isn't that long, like 30 days before you can eat hard foods, but it can absolutey change your looks entirely. For a lot of people, a lefort osteotomy, if they're recessed facially, can elevate them considerably.
I want this surgery but the problem is I don't have the money to do it. No matter how badly you want to fix the face that you have. You can't 😩😢 Why life is so unfair...
the pain is said to be like being stapled in the chin continuously... I need this too but I'm gonna see what I can do with orthodontics. but fuck, it will hurt
In 2006, I was 17-18 years old. I had lower jaw reconstruction sugurey to bring my jaw foward a few mm. I was innitaly soppose to have top and bottom reconstructive surgery but once in recovery room I was told they only did the bottom as they felt I didn't need the top portion done. Also during this operation the surgeon removed 3/4 fully impacted wisdom teeth. The 3rd molar on the right was left in because they needed that tooth to act as stabilizer for the screws in the jaw until the new bone grew back, then they'd remove it. My jaw was wired shut. At the time I had braces on my teeth and my bite wouldn't allign properly with out this particular operation. I was told I could "possibly" lose sensation/feeling in my lower chin lip and lower gums and teeth. However I permanently lost feeling in Lower lip, Chin, teeth & gums. After 10 years nothing has changed other than every now and then I'll get a burning or stinging or pins and needles sensation in certain areas of my chin & lip from time to time. It's annoying but I've learned to live with it. I'm not sure what happened other than the The mandibular inferior alveolar nerve got severed or stretched or pulled or damaged. Even the orthodontist at the time had no clue what happened nor did the surgeon. I was never told it could be permanent. It became a love/hate procedure while the results of my bite and facial construction looked amazing I honestly don't think it was worth losing the feeling to half of my face. Sometimes I'll get this like surge of tickling sensation through a nerve and I badly want to scratch it only to find I can't locate where the itch was coming from then on days I'll have a dull aching feeling in a nerve. Some days it will pulsate like a heart beat some ticklish some tender to the touch. Some days I feel fine some days in a ton of pain. Some days I feel the wind on my face other days I can't. Some days I scratch my chin or lip and get a rush of the ticlkes followed by a few seconds of pins and needles then back to no feeling. Sometimes I scratch I'll feel a mini orgasm in my chin and lip and the nerves will travel to my nose and other parts of my face and make that area start to itch. Since this operation I'm e extremely sensitive to cold water or things touching my chin or bottom lip. At times it's very painful times its feels nice. It's such a complicated thing to explain. I wish I had a way for my nerve to heal but after 10 going on 11 years I've come to terms I'll end up like this for the rest of my life. I wish I knew how to feel in my jaw teeth lip and chin. If any dentist or doctor or orthodontist or anyone in general is reading this and have any information they can provide to me about anything going on with me please let me know. Also what's the probability this nerve can be healed or saved if at all?
Man, your story resonates with me, as I am possibly about to be forced to live out a version of it myself. Ever since my adult teeth came in, I've had an open bite. It only worsened as I got older and into middle school due to my severely impacted wisdom teeth. I had braces from about 9 to 13 years old. This arduous period of dental treatment mostly corrected my exaggerated crowded upper teeth but left me with a retainer to wear on the honor system and a full set of wisdom teeth still driving at all of my teeth. Naturally, being the stupid short-sighted kid I was, I barely wore my retainer after having put up with the misery of metal wire and bracket braces and rubber bands for years; pain from the pressure, food getting stuck in them constantly, etc. I was free! So I thought. Where it used to be my right canine that was thrust up high, now my front teeth and left incisor are forming an orthodontic-repudiating enamel-coated rocket, being forced upwards as my wisdom teeth drive the right incisor and left canine behind them. I didn't get my wisdom teeth until one and a half years ago, and i am halfway through 26 years old. I thought the worst of my troubles would be over with my wisdom teeth removed. Wrong again. From then until now, it has been as though the removal of my wisdom teeth only yanked the anchors for my upper teeth. and they have bullied my three front teeth so high up to the point it has somewhat been affecting my ability to close my mouth with being fearful of aggravating the condition. If those teeth were tectonic plates, in the past 12 hours I've been experiencing an earth quake. The three front teeth are just floating now like an island, and I can't speak normally without feeling them move. I am afraid that I will be faced with a choice like yours soon. I've been told I'd have to do it before and shrugged it off, figuring I'd get a second opinion somewhere that was less gory sounding. This video was not comforting. I haven't been able to afford insurance or out of pocket on my own, and times aren't what they used to be for my parents' finances. I am grateful I had what I did get when times were better. Not everyone is that lucky to begin with, and a good part of my problem is my fault for not wearing the ugly and uncomfortable retainer, but I also cast a bit of blame on my orthodontist for not delegating heaps more priority on removing my wisdom teeth much earlier. I am about to pay dearly for it now. I am sorry that your procedure robbed you of your facial feeling. No one deserves that. I hope that they devise a repair for it soon. Until then, stay strong my friend. -Jake
Cheryl Tindwani This is the sort of thing that I am very worried about, as I am also getting surgery done on my lower jaw. I have a cross bite, so my chin is crooked. The only way to fix the problems that I am having is to do this surgery. All I can hope and pray for is that I will like my appearance as well as have all of my discomforts fixed, while not gaining any new discomforts like loosing all of the feeling in my jaw.
Cheryl Tindwani Hey Cheryl i had jaw surgery a few days ago to treat my underbite. Even before the surgery my surgeon sat with me and my mum and told us about the possible complications that comes with the surgery it's mandatory for all surgeons to document thier take on the surgery luckily after i regained conscious after the surgery my surgeon told me that they saved both the mandibular inferior alveolar nerve. It's been only a week now i got back my sensation on my tongue but I'm still very numb in the chin and bottom lip hopefully it comes back he said it usually comes back after a year hopefully it does. It's such a pain when it's numb there I've been eating like a toddler on my chin not able to feel it .
NIRVANICA SANDE my friend actually got a genioplasty done due to her jaw being under developed and also caused her to not be able to bite down properly. So her and her father found the best doctor in the area and she healed perfectly fine with no complications or any scarring. So it's case by case and also depends on the surgeon, anesthesiologist, the patient, and sometimes it's unexplainable. Glad that you healed well ☺️
@@OnePiece-os3pe The first week was the worst part, after that I felt so much better! I went back to school after 1.5 weeks tho and that was a little bit too soon, so I was quit tired the following weeks. In the beginning my lip and a part of my jaw was a bit numb, but after a few months it already came back. It's even a bit more sensitive now, but barely noticable. The swelling lasted around 6 months to fully go down but after 1.5 it wasn't obvious. I hope this helps!! :)
I just had surgery to bring my top jaw forward cause I had an underbite. yes I was wired shut and had to eat liquids for a week straight but I have no regrets doing this surgery. my bottom jaw was 11mm off of where it should have been and they also had to slit my top jaw to widen it. during the same surgery I had my septum corrected and fixed cause I couldn't breathe out of my nose. if there is one thing Im grateful for it would be that I had an amazing surgeon and I recovered faster than they thought I would. as of right now im fully healed and loving every bit of my smile. if you have any questions or concerns regarding this surgery I just went through it so hit me up with questions!
Dean Fochios I’m getting the same thing done am im 15 and quite worried about after. Does it really hurt. And when I finish it I have to have this wire on my braces when they put it on and you have to twist some sort of screw every week and apparently it hurts
Congratulations!!! I'm genuinely happy for you :) I've got something similar; a retruded maxilla + deviated nasal septum. Can I ask how much it cost you? Was this by any chance in Australia?
the bones are surgically broken in a neat and clean order. after the doctors adjust the jaw to where it is suppose to be placed, they screw small titanium brackets into the two spirited pieces of bone in order for the bone to heal perfectly back together. I was told I had a 3% chance of having an infection due to the metal brackets. its very rare it occurs but can be fixed with medication. I was also given the option of having another operation to remove the brackets after the bone has been healed 100% to further reduce the infection possibility. I hope this answered your question!@@empirical_blade6926
I think i have overbite a little bit even though I don't really care sometimes. And this surgery is so expansive, maybe just trying to work hard and have a surgery later or love the way I look.
Same..my dentist told me not to do that and thats why im always in condtant pain and having headaches and also why i can crack my jaw by opening it.. My muscles in my jaw are so worn out and it hurts..im starting to reach my end point..and its stressful because i already have anxiety and just the thought of having to push my jaw forward all day everyday to look normal is exhausting..
I officially started getting stuff done to my teeth at 16. Spacer, jaw expander and so forth till we hit braces. Fast forward 5 years, I finally get my braces off and get retainers done. 6 months after my Ortho tells me he notices my teeth shifting again. My upcoming appointment is next week, but I just woke up this morning and my Mom noticed they've moved. I think I need to have this done... Crap.
I've had an expander on at age 9. Then again at 14-15. I'm almost done my second expander as of now and then I'll need a retainer to maintain the top jaw's shape. And then once I'm 18 I'll need the jaw surgery for the underbite. :( Oh and then I've heard the Dentist's want to give me braces afterwards but I think that's BS and they just want money from me. My parents had to get them out of making me get braces TWICE! WTH?!?!
I’ve had an accident in my early teenage years. People will judge you in an instant. They say I’m ugly. So, I’m working hard to fix my jaw and restore it to its original form. Because nothing is free.
I’m planning on getting this surgery, I’ve always been super insecure about my underbite and people always pointed out how week my jaw line is. It also causes a lot of pressure on my back molars. Hopefully I get this surgery
I just had double jaw surgery last week and the first 5 days (currently on day 7) for me were the worst when with all the pain medication I was given. Good luck to you if you get it done!!!
Getting this surgery done this winter mainly to fix my sleep apnea... I'm nervous as hell as I've been told it's going to be around a 7 hour surgery... I'll keep you posted..
@@mina.mnys.217 due to covid and it being a non essential surgery it got put back to end of this month...I have my consult with the surgeon on the 24th and will have the surgery days after... I'll keep us posted
why couldnt i have just been born with a normal jaw like 99% of the population. every day i look at my weak receded jaw and non existing chin i feel so much pain its unbearable. the surgery costs so much money and ive been doing my best to save up for it but now ive been looking at videos performing this surgery and its TERRIFYING. i hate this, i dont want to go through this surgery but at the same time i will forever live depressed because of the way i look. the amount of times people have made fun of my appearance, literally just walking down the streets to buy food and i see people staring at me and chuckling. i wouldnt wish this on anyone, this sucks so much.
I'd done this surgery 3 months ago for excessive lower jaw growth and underbite. My swellings completely gone after 1 & 1/2 months..but numbness in lower jaw is still there,my doctor said it will take 2 yrs to recover the numbness completely. First 1 month is a terrible one afterwards everything will come into a harmony!!
Hey! So I had a tiny underbite, misaligned jaw and long chin and had my jaw setback, chin trimmed 3 days ago. Unlike most people, because my immune system was so good, I had zero complications, side effects and pain that I’m ready to be discharged now. I was able to speak right after surgery even and my recovery’s been 3-4 times faster than normal people. So the recovery varies from person to person. I’m a little excited and nervous whether there’ll be any change in my appearance though. Looking forward to it. Glad I had it done for now. Also about diet, I’m put on a liquid diet for two weeks but my appetite didn’t go away, I haven’t been hungry or nauseous at all that I’ve been able to eat more mushy, variety of food compared to other people. The only annoying part is getting bunch of antibiotics shots 4 times a day. That hurts. Oh I had tubes connected from my jaw to drain out blood and fluid, the third day was the worst when my face felt so heavy and numb, I felt fatigued overall but it got better after removing the tubes and a getting a good sleep.
I used to have an open bite (5mm) and most orthodontists had suggested extractions since I couldn't afford surgery. So I opted for a camouflage technique instead, osseous genioplasty to fix my protruding chin, 4 premolar extractions (wisdom teeth had already been extracted), lingual braces with tads for 2 years. I now have wire attachments behind my front teeth and wear a retainer for 12 hours a day and a tongue crib to better help me position my tongue. It has been worth it.
Same I’ve been bullied all the way through school even by my closest “friends” even when they knew I’m insecure about it but atleast I’m on the path for surgery now
what i've learned from the video: 1- open bite is a condition where upper and lower front teeth don't touch when at rest 2- open bite can lead to tooth wear, tooth breakdown, tmj disorders and speech problems 3- open bite reconstruction surgery involves removing some of the bone of the upper jaw and move it to new position plates and screws are used once the jaws are aligned to secure it in position 4- protruding lower jaw is corrected by mandibular setback surgery. tooth bearing portion of lower jaw is separated from its base and moved backward for proper alignment 5- orthognathic surgeries are made along with orthodontic treatment and take several years to complete
Funny enough, the thing people don’t remember or think of is learning to use your mouth again. Like talking and eating. It took some time for me to get used to, glad it’s behind me!
@@eonrelaxationmusic1916 oh shit, “think of, is learning” Most people would use common sense to understand that the comma was missing, and could fill it in.
Just had underbite double jaw surgery yesterday at around 6 AM. I was unconscious, didn't even realize I had the surgery. One of the surgeons before the surgery said I was going to feel like a trainwreck afterwards. I was hoping he was exaggerating, but not gonna lie, I felt like fucking shit :/ I didn't realize it at the time, but it was pretty bad. The worst thing was the swelling. I thought the first day in the hospital would be only temporary and the worst day, but here a day after, and right now the swelling gotten even worse. And you're right, I still don't feel like myself with my underbite before, honestly, but one of the surgeons showed me the before and after pics and the afterpic looked pretty good. I just hope the swelling would go down quickly and I would like to be able to confidently smile more. I had my braces on since I was 12, and I'm now 19. I am also worried about keeping my mouth clean after eating, cause I find it pretty hard to open up my swollen mouth, but I have to, or else I'll get an infection :/ The good thing about this whole experience were the nurses and other assistants who helped me with water, food, bathroom, etc. They were very nice. I'm hoping I won't regret this in the end, honestly. It might be wrong, but I felt unlucky to have an abnormal jaw and have to get surgery, unlike other people... I was also bullied for it, at least in middle school and first year of freshmen year of high school. Now my jaw has gotten better, but I figured I had to take the surgery since it was planned ever since I got braces.
@@Prinve59 I dont know what kind of infection but I was told to regularly use the mouth wash they gave me for that plus some pills (for pain, infection, etc) and an ice pack for the face swelling. you won't be able to open your mouth or eat properly for at least a week.
I was also bullied for my jaw.. I‘ll have this surgery done in a year and not gonna lie I‘m really scared with how long it will take time to heal and how am I going to eat food like before and just many other questions. I really hope for the best :(
when I was suppose to get braces at 13, I went to a few different orthodontists. But one of them said they wanted to break my jaw and do this reconstructive surgery, because my jaw grows down instead of out. At 13 that sounded scary, I was still growing, and I didn't want to do it. Also because it was cost a crap ton more money. But the way it looks now like I don't have a jaw, and it's just my face connected to my neck doesn't look the best. Sometimes I think it'll be okay because I do exercises to tighten the muscles so it DOES look like I have somewhat of a jaw. But still sometimes I think about it, and wonder what it be like.
It is still possible to do a reconstructive surgery after childhood! Usually they do it at around 18-19. If you have the money for it now, and still want it, I suggest you go back to a surgeon to talk about this.
Your situation is very similar to mine I was 13 when my orthodontist suggested I get corrective jaw surgery or I would have problems down the line. But at that young age it sounds so scary you really aren’t thinking too much about the future. Now that I have sleep apnea and other problems that come along with it I wonder if it would be worth the trouble to get the surgery now as an adult.
My parents were both addicts and I left home for my safety at 17. I have serious issues with my weak chin. I have to balance paying for school and working a full time job and my health insurance doesn’t cover this surgery. I wanna feel confident in myself and not always be thinking about how much I hate my weak chin💔 I wish I had grown up with parents who cared about my health. I’ve never even gotten braces. Never got my molars out nothing. And I know I have a cavity but I can’t even afford groceries at the end of the week so I have no idea how I can fix a cavity that’s been bothering me for so long. I want to have beautiful wedding photos to be proud of I want to feel confident in myself I want my jaw pain to stop and I want my lisp to go away💔💔 it’s hurts so much to have to see others get treatment you can’t get because you didn’t get that head start💔
I’m sorry for you can you tell me your compliments about your chin pls my orthodontist told me you need to get thissurgery and I’m so stressed and confused. I haven’t got any issues with my chin I’m just worry about the future. My orthodontist said you might have some health issues in the future
I'm so nervous. I may have to get this done. I've been using braces for 3 years. They straightened my teeth, but I still have a crossbite. My orthodontist even tried rubber bands.

patient is undergoing orthopedic surgery to treat skeletal class III (SETTING BACK OF THE MANDIBLE). Mandible is fixed with plate and screws backward. It also treated the open bite
I was told i needed this when i was 7 but i never went to the orthodontist to talk about it and now I'm 14 the dentist said there's no way i can get it done since I'm under 18 but the orthodontist said that if twin blocks don't work (pretty sure they wont) they will probably have to do this.
I actually had an accident when I was in the elementary school. That's why I have an noticeable uneven jaw and asymmetrical face. A lot of people call me ugly because of it. Even if words from others don't matter they are still hurtful and mean. The thing is in the Philippines, jaw surgery is not covered by insurance and I am not rich so I think I'll just have to accept that I am not blessed with a pretty face.
Same but it happened to me in a car crash and it’s very embarrassing bc sometimes my friends tale pics of me and they laugh cause of my face and jaw :(
I have the same issue too and i will do the surgery soon if u dont get money brother promise i will make that money for u in 3 years we will be good looking
As a 17 yro i was devastated when i found out I couldn’t get braces because i had to get jaw surgery. It’s an expensive surgery costing me around $40k. Im working hard to save enough money to one day be able to confidently smile
I'm also having open bite, under bite problem. But since surgery like this cost thousands and I don't have such money, I'm manually pushing my jaw as much as I can on daily basis. I believe we can reshape our muscles and bones manually, if we train it everyday. It will take years, of course. Just like how people put on muscles or losing weight, it's a long and continuous process.
I may be getting this surgery to bring my lower jaw forward. I have severe overjet where my front teeth protrude horizontally over my bottom teeth, but an orthodontist said its because my lower jaw is too far back and that my upper jaw is in a good position relative to the rest of my face. I'm 18 currently and haven't been able to get braces as a child, so I'm not sure whether to go with the surgery option or the option where i get two premolars removed and my front teeth pushed back.
@@mackymoteo4871 apparently they told me that its 40k but Ohip covers that (canada) so they said there will be a fee of around 3k for exrays and all that
I had the 3rd type of surgery in 2005 and it all went well but the numbness, burning, tingling and occasional pin pricks in my chin and lower lip drives me insane.
I had the same surgery in 2018 due to underbite. Took little time to recover n i'm in love with my new look too. No any implications afterwards but got a gummy smile after the surgery which is can correct easily.
My dad had this surgery done in the early 90s for orthodontic reasons. I had an implant surgically installed over 10 years ago and jaw surgery was discussed but I didn't choose it in the end. I was in the middle of college at the time so it would have been a crazy time to recover from a reshaped jaw.
I’m 15 and went to an orthodontist just 2 days ago who said I was a candidate for this surgery and said I have a class 2 overbite. I convinced my parents to have this along with a rhinoplasty when I’m 18. I always knew I had a class 2 overbite just needed the words of a medical professional to convince my parents, hopefully I’ll go to the surgeon the orthodontist recommended pretty soon to have a surgery plan and determine when the pre-surgery orthodontic treatment will start. I’m actually so stoked even for the braces part, the only issue is my teeth are perfectly straight now as I had braces 3 years ago and to fit my new face they’ll have to be changed.
Well I’m still getting the rhinoplasty but not the jaw surgery. I went to another orthodontist and they basically said that it wouldn’t be worth the hassle considering that my overbite isn’t so noticeable. So now I’m getting a chin implant instead which is much less invasive considering they don’t move your actual jaw bones. Of course this’ll all still happen when I’m 18 so not yet.
Im 14 and i have to get this surgery when im 18, i’ve had the twin block brace but we decided to call it a day with them because its really unbearable, I have a 12mm overbite and so i think im getting the mandibular advancement one
Hi friend, I understand what you’re going through. I had an overbite and had 4 sections done (upper anticlockwise rotation and gummy smile, lower advancement, genioplasty). My advice would be do it but research a good doctor, have support of someone with you and prepare yourself physically and mentally for it. It’s a life changing experience but personally I do not regret it one bit. The outcome is amazing.
I just got this done today... the pain level is insane ... if you do it , you will be in pain. And they put you on meds after but it hurts so bad... the worst pain I ever experienced
Oh gosh I think I have this probelm 😭😭😭 I'm sad tho since I thoguht braces could fix it but no Also my orthodontic said that they couldn't do anything and this was the only only option But I can't get this can I?
Is there any way to like, move the teeth further back in your jaw? Like I would want my lower jaw to be moved forward or just stay how it is, but my bottom teeth need to be moved further back. As it is right now, to bite with all my molar grooves aligned and for my bottom incisors to clear the top ones, my jaw has to go back not an uncomfortable amount back but still further back then I'd like to. If I were to keep my jaw where I'd like, my bottom incisors hit the top ones and prevent me from closing enough to have the molars touch. I know when you're resting you don't usually have your teeth touching but I would really rather have my lower jaw further forward while keeping the teeth further back. For both comfort and cosmetics I guess. If it were only cosmetics then I could just get a chin extension basically but as it stands I already hate how my teeth align. And this is after braces. Sigh. My fucking mouth and jaw are awful. Joint issues, frequent biting of the back of my cheek or whatever it decides next, bite issues, it's not symmetrical, had to have a retainer to widen my upper palate, can't do either of the rolled r's that aren't the English one (not rolled) and the tap with the tip of your tongue, my top teeth aren't centred with the lip frenulum and my bottom teeth aren't aligned with either of them because of a molar that never erupted and had to be pulled which left a big gap and meant my teeth shifted, and the last molar wasn't brought forward until years later with braces and then a couple more years until that wisdom tooth erupted to take the extra place, and the top teeth shifted after I had a forsus spring to move the bottom ones forward which in turn moved the top a little back (on that one side, so both jaws' teeth basically rotated opposite clockwises), and just UGH this turned into a stupid rant about my stupid-ass mouth and jaw. Fuck this shit.
Bro i want to get the surgery for my underbite so freakin bad so i can get my glow up and we can also agree that we want that but i dont think i can afford and that is why ima go to the navy so i can get free medical and other stuff
I’ve had this surgery. I had an underbite so they had to move my lower jaw back a little and they cut my upper jaw just above my teeth line and moved it forward a little. I had my jaw wired shut for two 1/2 months.
I just had surgery on Tuesday April 1st, 2019. I have a splint and rubber bands. My surgeon said all will be on no longer than 2 weeks. I'm sorry you were wired shut so long, but at least you're done. I had my lower jaw moved forward and my top jaw moved up and over a bit.
@@badwaaves Well it should. Right now my jaw looks like the underbite example on the left of the screen. Which means my chin is protruding outwards and it's ugly. I'll have a normal jaw if I get the surgery when I'm older.
My daughter has upper jaw is more than lower jaw it's not strong chin I am worried plz pray 🙏 for my daughter 🙏 with heart doctor say that I can't operate because they can't operate the same time,?
I don't have an underbite but my lower lip is further back than my upper lip. Pretty annoying tbh but I'm gonna save up and see what I can do about it.
My face looks really flat if you look at it from the side. I don’t know why. I think my jaw is in the right place?? Lol I don’t even know what procedure I need.
I was advised to have the overbite procedure by my old dentist but instead I changed dentist and had my teeth fixed without surgery and in half the time.
@@ferdaushowlader6566 sorry I am only seeing this now. No, there are no scars on my face or in my mouth. It all healed, you can’t tell anything happened
Is it normal for you entire jaw and rows of teeth to be perfectly alligned to allow your bottom row to lie behind your top row and the top row is shaped so that your bottom row doesn't contact your gums?
I got really lucky and was able to get this surgery while in the military. The liquid diet and swelling were probably the worst parts post surgery. I also lost almost 20 lb. Some of the feeling in my upper pallet still has not returned, however I am very happy with the results!
I have an open bite and my dentist says I can have this surgery to prevent me having issues in the future. I have always had a funny jaw for as long as I can remember and only once could I feel it hurting but I think it would be better to prevent future issues. The only problem is I’ve never had any form of surgery before and I’m kind of scared to have it done so it’s a tough decision but seeing what others had to say in the comments about their surgery experiences are kind of reassuring.
I hate the way I look, my chin is so long it measures 4cm starting from my lip and 4,5cm when I smile. I wish I had enough money to fix it, but I dont.
My upper jaw is more forward than lower and my chin isn't very strong. I figured since i have good bite and don't want to risk losing feeling in face I'll just go with chin implant. Just to balance my profile little
I had this surgery done 19 years ago due to a massive underbyte.
Ok but does it mess up the resting position of your teeth..like how i feel like my teeth currently close like a puzzle..jow does it feel with them pushing my jaw back
What about numbness!!! I’m sick of it 2.5 years post op
How bad is the pain after bro? Have to get mine done soon and I’m so worried about it.
Jamie Fowler do you have to or is it an option? My lower jaw is slightly behind but they aren’t saying i need it but its being offered
riizzyy it’s an option but think it’ll be good to get it done in the long run the only problem is the pain afterwards which I’m dreading
For anyone scared about the surgery:
I just had this surgery (to correct my 10mm overbite) last week Wednesday and they put you to sleep and trust me when I say you can’t feel a thing. You’re very swollen afterwards and drugged up when you’re in the hospital but they make it so the pain is bearable. I am still swollen now and in pain but it’s worth it in the long run.

I had 2 jaw surgeries in 2014 and 2015. The healing process is annoying due to swelling (cheeks) and having to eat through a straw for 6 weeks but no pain or extreme discomfort at all. The result now is beautiful and I'm extremely glad I did it.
How did you pay for the surgery? Did you have insurance?
Six weeks of recovery isn’t as long as I thought it would be to recover from this type of surgery, thanks for the info
@@melissadavis18 Nah it’s much longer than 6 weeks. That’s for how long he/she ate from a straw
Did you have to use braces after? Because I’m thinking about getting this surgery but I don’t know if braces are needed after

My 14yo son just had this done yesterday in Australia for his overbite.
Braces stayed on during surgery
Top jaw moved back 8mm
Bottom jaw required to be moved forward 4mm to achieve best alignment.
4 wisdom teeth removed
Chin bone cut and re- positioned.
Bone grafts from same site.
Had it all done at once in a private hospital.
Total Cost in private hospital was about $28k
Braces about $8k
No health insurance
Hardly any pain as plenty of meds in hospital and to take home.
One night stay in hospital
Lots of swelling, but not as bad as I expected.
can only have liquid food through a straw / syringe for 6 weeks. Can only open mouth enough to fit a straw in as the braces have temporary elastics at the back to keep his jaw shut to heal.
Ice packs on cheeks for a week or more to reduce swelling.
No sports for 2 months
Was able to talk / mumble within 24 hours.
He is doing really well, a bit weak and tired but minimal pain, mainly just a lot of discomfort.
How is he doing now ?

i just got this surgery and i’m not even a week into recovery. wish me luck y’all ✊😔
Hows recovery? How does your jaw feel now? Any pain? Can you feel the metal connector? Would love to hear an update.
un disclosed recovery is doing well :) it’s a little slow and just today i got the elastics that hold my jaw shut replaced with slightly weaker elastics. i don’t have any pain but in case you plan on getting this surgery, you should note that due to swelling and having a plastic tube down your throat during surgery, you might have to deal with a sore throat and maybe achy ears for a few days afterwards. but right now, 13 days after my surgery, i can tell you there is no pain and i am not taking anymore meds. i also can’t feel the metal connector at all. it’s worth mentioning that jaw surgery is different for everyone but this has been my experience so far :)

This is the sort of thing that I am very worried about, as I am also getting surgery done on my lower jaw.

I have a question, do the severed bones fuse together? or it has to be hold in place with the metal screws?
the bones are surgically broken in a neat and clean order. after the doctors adjust the jaw to where it is suppose to be placed, they screw small titanium brackets into the two spirited pieces of bone in order for the bone to heal perfectly back together. I was told I had a 3% chance of having an infection due to the metal brackets. its very rare it occurs but can be fixed with medication. I was also given the option of having another operation to remove the brackets after the bone has been healed 100% to further reduce the infection possibility. I hope this answered your question!@@empirical_blade6926

why couldnt i have just been born with a normal jaw like 99% of the population. every day i look at my weak receded jaw and non existing chin i feel so much pain its unbearable. the surgery costs so much money and ive been doing my best to save up for it but now ive been looking at videos performing this surgery and its TERRIFYING. i hate this, i dont want to go through this surgery but at the same time i will forever live depressed because of the way i look. the amount of times people have made fun of my appearance, literally just walking down the streets to buy food and i see people staring at me and chuckling. i wouldnt wish this on anyone, this sucks so much.
How did you pay for the surgery? Did you have insurance?
@@ivonnelopez8203 no ,I have to pay around 2 lakhs(Indian rupees).
In India there is no insurance on cosmetic/orthognathic surgery.
That hurts.
Oh I had tubes connected from my jaw to drain out blood and fluid, the third day was the worst when my face felt so heavy and numb, I felt fatigued overall but it got better after removing the tubes and a getting a good sleep.
what about your appearance now? it it get better?
Oh sweet fuck here we go baby it’s scheduled for tomorrow.
How did it go?
@@christopherjong9189 It went very well. This was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. Feel free to ask questions if you have any.
I had been bullied all my life as a little kid I've never been able to fix it but someday I will make it possible

@@benmagrin4282 same I made my decision
what i've learned from the video:
1- open bite is a condition where upper and lower front teeth don't touch when at rest
2- open bite can lead to tooth wear, tooth breakdown, tmj disorders and speech problems
3- open bite reconstruction surgery involves removing some of the bone of the upper jaw and move it to new position
plates and screws are used once the jaws are aligned to secure it in position
4- protruding lower jaw is corrected by mandibular setback surgery.
tooth bearing portion of lower jaw is separated from its base and moved backward for proper alignment
5- orthognathic surgeries are made along with orthodontic treatment and take several years to complete
well done:)

Which kind of infection? You will get and how much it is difficult to open to your mouth after getting operated?
@@Prinve59 I dont know what kind of infection but I was told to regularly use the mouth wash they gave me for that plus some pills (for pain, infection, etc) and an ice pack for the face swelling. you won't be able to open your mouth or eat properly for at least a week.
I was also bullied for my jaw.. I‘ll have this surgery done in a year and not gonna lie I‘m really scared with how long it will take time to heal and how am I going to eat food like before and just many other questions. I really hope for the best :(
How much tym will it take for the swelling to go completely
why couldn't I just be born with a normal jaw...having a massive overbite sucks
when I was suppose to get braces at 13, I went to a few different orthodontists.

I may be getting this surgery to bring my lower jaw forward. I’m actually so stoked even for the braces part, the only issue is my teeth are perfectly straight now as I had braces 3 years ago and to fit my new face they’ll have to be changed.
what did you do? any updates?
Well I’m still getting the rhinoplasty but not the jaw surgery. I went to another orthodontist and they basically said that it wouldn’t be worth the hassle considering that my overbite isn’t so noticeable. So now I’m getting a chin implant instead which is much less invasive considering they don’t move your actual jaw bones. Of course this’ll all still happen when I’m 18 so not yet.
