  • Thor: Love And Thunder is... a movie that exists. Truly a downgrade from Ragnarok, and the direction the character is taking in his solo films is all because of Taika Waititi. I'm not joking. It's time to talk about who Thor was, who Thor is, and why this happened.

The greatest problem with Thor L&T is it treated everything like a joke. Thor destroys temple- joke, Sif arm cut off-joke, Kids kidnapped- joke etc. The fact everything is a joke dramatically reduces the stakes and makes the film feel weightless.

I removed the scene from the video for pacing, but I actually talked about how the kids being kidnapped is played off as a joke and so there’s zero tension throughout the movie other than Jane dying.

It's sad that Marvel can't seem to balance the drama and comedy when it comes to their more out there characters and world's, like what James Gunn did for Guardians of the Galaxy. Almost like they feel ashamed of Thor and just turned him into a parody. Although, I feel like Endgame left him a joke without direction or purpose and this film doubled down on that.

@@suezcontours6653 He brought this up in the video. In Ragnarok and Infiniry War, we got to see how Thor uses comedy to deal with his losses. And this was shown effectively. The problem in the new Thor is that they show this but timed it by 100. Thor doesn’t just use comedy, he becomes a full dumb child. He isn’t serious about anything, and it just makes him seem so out of character. There always needs to be a balance between seriousness and comedy, and this includes the way characters talk and act.

Imagine if Thor did remember that and right before the third act when Jane was in the hospital, he told Mjolnir not to protect Jane anymore, so that she would be safe and wouldn't die from using the hammer, and then left to go fight Gorr. Then imagine that Jane came in to help later with the hammer, like she did, but it would be because some time after Thor left, she tried to pick up the hammer and it then deemed her worthy because she was willing to die to help her friends, not because she was using it to try and fight her cancer. When we'd see her pop up, we'd get to realize that it's because she was deemed worthy and we'd get to watch Thor realize that as well. It would be a nice end for Jane's character arc, showing that she had become a real hero and that she was worthy.

Kenneth Branagh the director for the first Thor, set the stage for such a wildly different story then the other marvel movies at the time. He set the stage for an Shakespearian Opera, and that's what Thor should have been. An opera, an Epic, like the epic poems of old. Like idk....the Edda? You know the basis for the entire mythology of Thor!
The dark world was...boring and forgettable. I can only remember bits and pieces. I understand that Marvel wanted to save Thor as a franchise, and that's why they hired Waititi, but I wish they had hired a director known for directing grand operatic fantasy narratives like Peter Jackson. Could you image a Thor anthology the likes of the minds behind the Lotr movies?
I feel that the first 3 movies, and infinity war were Thor Odinson's story, but this should have been the beginning of Jane Foster's story as Thor, a new trilogy or duology. There were some genuinely good moments among the garbage that is Love and Thunder, which only serves to disappoint me more, because I see what it could have been.

So I ended up rewatching Thor 1 & 2 so I can show my friend who had never seen the first two Thor movies before he and I watch Thor: Love and Thunder for the first time. Honestly, I forgot just how good The Dark World was. Is it perfect? No, but it balances serious tones and humor far better than Love and Thunder. It's also shows a Thor that has grown. He's far more competent, his dynamic with Loki is fantastic, and he's the best heroic version of himself. He was more level headed when his own father was angry. He's more selfless and shows how he's changed since the first movie. Like when Volstagg slammed his mug down and said, "Another!". While Thor sat his down on the table. Or when near the end he said he'd rather be a good person than a great king. That was the proper progression of his character and I loved that so much. He was respectful, honorable, strategic, cleaver, and willing to do whatever it took to help others. He also humbled himself. That was the Thor that felt like he was worthy of Mjolnir.
Were there other problems with The Dark World? Yes, but the tone and how Thor's character was handled I thought was great. It's by far my favorite Thor movie and my favorite version of Thor in the MCU.

thor could have not wanted to jane to be a hero because of all that he’s lost. because to him, she’s a remnant of the past, of wonderful memories to him.
valkyrie could have had a moment with Gor, and talked about how shitty the gods were. there were so many potential heartfelt moments missed out in this movie, and I think it makes it all the more disappointing.
if taika wanted to talk about marginalisation, he could have talked about how thor doesn’t realise how terrible the gods can be. how everyone’s lives is apparently inconsequential in comparison, and how thor could never understand that. there’s just so much that could be touched on,and this had so so much potential to be more.

Only the comedy wasn't used to show how irreverent both Thor and the director were like Ragnarok and L&T but to hide the pain he felt from losing the people he loved; the bathos strengthens the pathos.
Taika is usually praised for this in his other films, only he seems to drop this once he's making Marvel movies because he just doesn't seem to care, almost like he views comic-books and CBMs as inferior and fans taking them seriously is inherently silly. 'Infinity War' was when the facade of humor cracked, but 'Ragnarok' was where he adopted it. Yes, it was a silly movie, but only by embrace. Yes, it borders on parody, but the affectionate kind.
Waititi wasn't just praised for it in his other films, it was his style; his distinction.

I hated Love and Thunder but I do find it quite ironic that people have wanted the MCU films to have more of a voice and vision and Waititi did do that but fucked it up real bad. Similar to Patty Jenkins and WW84, it shows that just letting someone do whatever the fuck with established characters and settings can be really bad even if they are talented people. Basically this film desperately needed someone to remind the people working on it about the actual characters involved.

this dynamic is been all the time - a unique "specialty" director is invited in to do their own version of a pre-established character - and they do a great job - the first time - when they're still partially constrained by studio expectations or guidance - and since things go so well, they're giving carte blanche or free reign to "do whatever they want" on the following film, never realizing that the BLEND of the speciality director combined with the pre-established tone is what was the actual formulae for success.
TLDR: Taika Waititi is a good comedy director, who worked well in RAGNAROK because he was working within the MCU framework - after that was released, his unrestricted comedy stylings were overdone for Thor fans and the film suffered because it had no seriousness to what should have been actually a lot of serious storylines

The movie made all of the tragedy thor went through into a joke, downplayed everything to a point where even the ending wasn't emotional at all. Even ragnarok had serious, mature and character driven story moments.
Thor is a completely different person in this movie. It felt like a cartoony spin off rather than a real thor movie.
Thor acted like a child, which can be funny at times but not when it's his main personality in the movie. He didn't demonstrate his wisdom or the maturity he had gained throughout the thor movies and into avengers age of ultron

I was so excited to an Asguardians of the Galaxy story. The guardians were the perfect characters to help mold Thor into a hero that was dealing with his trauma in a healthy way. (It would also be a great time for Drax to actually do something that wasn't a joke. His dead family was NEVER brought up while fighting Thanos. Great time to remedy that mistake.) Also, untapped potential for jokes that actually land because Thor's jokes (old god from a nordic world vs. young pirates in scifi space) would bounce well off them. Instead, we barely got anything because Marvel wanted money and was too lazy to make the directors work together or hire a director to combine the two hero groups.
As soon as Endgame ended, I said "I only care to see the Guardians/Thor movie. After that, I'm done." Welp, they couldn't even do that, so after I watch the Guardians movie (already disappointed), I am officially done. Star Wars has already been ruined by Disney. I'm not sticking around to see them make another dumpster fire of a second beloved franchise.

That is a great idea. It actually would have been better if Thor LOVED having Jane as a co-hero and they spent the first act of the film romping and stomping around the universe and fall in love while Gorr is butchering gods. They have a brief battle with Gorr but they are no match for him. They barely get away with their lives.
They go to the home of the gods. Zeus refuses to help. So it turns into a heist. They need to steal his lighting bolt, which is considered the most powerful weapon in the universe since Odin is gone. This leads to an all out brawl with the pantheon of Greek gods and a narrow escape. Then have Thor discover that Jane has cancer, and that Gorr may not be beatable. This brings them into conflict. That leaves Jane in a hospital bed and Thor off to fight Gorr in what might be a losing battle as the stars in the skies start to burn out as the Universe begins to go dark.
I'd lose that entire kids are kidnapped sub-plot and the Eternity sub-plot. Then have Gorr show up at Jane's bedside and explain himself and we get his backstory. Thor returns to save Jane, but Gorr is still very much a match for him. Jane chooses to stop him and help save everyone and Thor and makes the choice to pick up the hammer one last time. I'd maybe do a callback by having Gorr say 'put the hammer down'. Thor and Jane defeat Gorr and save the gods. Jane dies. The stars return. Thor moves on.
Post credit scene: Still sets up Hercules from the lightning heist in Act 2

it doesn't matter if those sub plots are largely irrelevant to the bigger storyline of the movie, they are still going to inject all their fake virtue signalling regardless
the less relevant to the story that these sub plots are... the more obvious and apparent it becomes to see just how much they are immaterial to the actual main story and is basically just an accessory, like an appendage hanging off of a corpse

Instead, we get a bunch of gods who don't care about people protected, the understandably angry guy decide to kidnap kids because we gotta show he's a villain compared to these insufferable assholes, and missed opportunities for some really deep moments like someone mentioned above with Quill and Jane, or even Nebula and Gorr.
