SOUTHERN STYLE BLACK EYED PEA WITH HAM HOCKS

- HELLO EVERYONE!!! Today I’m sharing a southern classic recipe that I remembered as a child. My Mother cooked black eyed peas along with fried chicken, pork chops gravy steaks and the list goes on. BLACK-EYED PEAS WITH HAM HOCKS
16 oz. pkg Black-Eyed Peas
2-3 Smoked Ham Hocks
6-8 Cups Water
1/2 Medium Onion
1 Tablespoon Onion Powder (optional)
Salt and Pepper to taste
1 Tablespoon Sugar (Optional)
1 Tablespoon of Bacon Drippings or
Fried Oil
Chopped Jalapeños if you prefer
On Stovetop: Cook Ham Hocks for 2 1/2-3 hours or until tender.
Pressure Cooker: Cook for 1 hour
After adding peas to pot Simmer for 45-55 minutes or until the peas are done and the texture you prefer. Enjoy!!

Ms. Brenda Dee, all I did was sign on to my computer. And there you were cooking black eyed peas. I am so hungry. I started to swallow hard. A southern meal reminds me of my mother. What do I have for dinner? Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans for the third day. I want some black eyed peas and pork chops. Oh well, maybe tomorrow. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.

Holding off on the salt and pepper at the beginning was a good idea: ham hocks are very well seasoned.

My question is, do you have to cook the ham hocks first? Are they raw when you buy them? I was just wondering cuz ive never used them. We picked some up for beans but pinto cooks all day (which is what my cousin used them for) but black eyed peas doesn't cook all day. I guess what im asking here, is can I just throw one in with the peas without pre cooking it?

My mother (R.I.P.) LOVED buffalo fish… it was her favorite fish to eat. It’s tasty but a little too bony for my liking.

Everything looks delicious 😋. My mother use to cook buffalo and I remember she liked the rib as well because if I remember buffalo is a fatty fish. She also would sometimes cook sheep head fish as well. I am not sure if you have heard of that fish. But anyway this again brought back old memories of my mom. I was thinking about frying chicken tomorrow and didn't know what to put with it but I think I will do Blackeye peas, since no one in my household will eat them, I will enjoy eating them.
