A staple at our table when I was growing up, served with cornbread. Many many meals of fresh blackened peas. Mom canned them as well, when she was canning I was shelling. Still love them.
Interesting recipe. I learned black-eyed peas as a little tyke in the 50s from my preacher's wife grandma and it was a simple recipe. Peas (some snapped but most were strung), salt pork, a little salt and pepper. Served with a wedge of cornbread and a glass of sweetmilk. My daddy always ate them with buttermilk when he could. A little sliced onion and sweet pickle on the side. I eat my pintos and Cajun 15 bean soup that way too. Not so much soul food to me chef but just plain good food....period. With the folks I grew up with, black, white, brown, whatever....just good eating. I was so glad when my Ohio raised wife (RIP) fell in love with beans or peas and cornbread when I first made them after we were married. Beautiful memories going back for seconds trying to make the peas and the cornbread come out even.
Awwwh, 😢😢teary-eyed for your kindness to your neighbors. I will have to give this a try mouthwatering! Yes I will use the turkey. Full watch my friend, this was a great share. Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year🥰
Good morning Chef Jeffery! Interesting why people don't cook Black eye peas more often!! I love them all Year!! Not just New Years!! Give me some Ham hock, hot sauce and some corn bread with it and I will be singing "I'm going up to heaven"!!!! Lol. You have a wonderful Old School Soul Food Day my Dear friend!! Continue to keep stiring up the gifts Chef Jeffery!! 🎁🎁
Good morning Chef Jeffery, I can taste and smell them black eyes peas through phone looks amazing. Thanks for sharing 💯 Have a Better than Bless Day🌷❤️😃💯
My goodness!! I grew up eating black eyed peas served over white rice and cornbread on the side. I still have it at least 3 times a year now that I introduced it to my husband years back. He absolutely loves it. Only difference is, I just cook it with a ham hock for flavoring and nice bite size pieces of ham. Like you said, can make it with almost any meat but really taste the best with that pork fat. Thanks for sharing Chef! God Bless!!
I am about to put mine on now. I couldn't find pork jowls but pork necks. That'll do for now. Traditionally, we would have with greens, cornbread and coleslaw. If ma and I were lucky chitterlings. Other times we would have with cabbage and the other times with sauerkraut and pork. I too like you decided to have in the summer. I had a wonderful recipe with black eyed peas and seafood salad. Hit whenever I took to gathering. ☺️
Good Morning Chef Jeffrey. I love me some Blackeye peas with salt jowl bacon. Your blackeye peas with the the jowl bacon, onions and bell peppers looks so delicious with some hot water cornbread. Thats the way my Mama would cook hers, with all the onions and seasoning. Yes, it will be a part of my menu and on my table. I wish that we were neighbors, to receive one of your meals. Stay safe.
Good Morning Chef Jeff, Your Black Eye Peas look delicious. And I heard they are spose to be good Luck when you fix them on New Years day. Plus A single woman is spose to let a man come in the woman house before any one else comes in also. That is also for good luck. I was best of freinds with a woman that was raised by her grandparents in Mississippi. But she passed away last week.
I also only cook black eyed peas on New Years. I have a similar recipe, only I add collard greens to it. It is so cool you feed your neighbors every year! You are a true hero sir! Keep up the good work.
Ahhh, black eyed peas and and ham on New Year's day. It's been a tradition in my family to eat them for luck. I'm always willing to try a new recipe, thank you for sharing you're chef Jeff, can't wait to try them. Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year! 🎊🎉🎇🎆
Love the recipes you did my Christmas meal, now New Years. Never cooked black eye peas that way before, a family tradition just got better thanks Cheif Jeffrey
☆Chef Old School☆. I really like black eye peas. So many people and family members that I know. That don't like black eyes peas. But; I doooo lol 😆. Thank you, for the video📹. I know your neighbors are glad to have, you as a neighbor. 🥘✌

Merry Christmas Ole School Soul Foid family! This recipe is right on time. My aunt used to fix these every year. This will be my first year to do it myself! Can't wait! Happy New Year to all!🥳
Can someone please do some preparing/showing, (make a list of ingredients) and less talking and music!! Thank you! We need to know how and I love the why or history, that's good as well, but please the HOW is what is needed. And how to make pork jowls? Also, pig feet, show us please! Thank you my wonderful Black American Chefs, love ❤.
Thank you so much for showing me how to cook black eye peas. For year I don’t want to learn how to cook them. I knew my husband like them but I didn’t because of the taste. But when I saw how you cook them I was a go for me, so for the new years I wanted to cook this for my hubby. And let me tell you he and I love it the seasoning meat and the color and texture. Please keep doing what you do and thank you.
Those look delicious. It's tradition for me to cook black eye peas, greens or cabbage (both always with bacon in them), cornbread and hog jowl on New Year's day. This year we're having pork ribs instead of jowl. You just have to. Whole lot of yummy right there.
I too after making black eyed peas for the first time wondered why I hadn't made them before or more often? They are not promoted as much on the cooking shows I guess? They are easy to fix and don't take all that much time to cook.
Thanks Chef Jeffrey for the throw back of the old Southern traditional New Year Dinner, cooking my Chitterlings and Maws today 😊 Peace and Prosperity to you this New Year🎇🎉
