    This is the same old story. It amazes me that people are focusing on the Asian man in this skit. Some people say it’s racist because of the way he talks. Well that’s comedy. Stop and think about Max. He plays a blundering idiot white man. But you don’t here me complaining. I am white. I think he is hilarious. All races have great people and bad people. Funny people and sad people. There is nothing wrong with having fun with each others cultures and speech.

      Idiots think it's racist because they can't grasp the point of the dialogue. It's an accent issue, and the butt of the joke is Max. The Claw isn't being put down at all, except for being part of an international organization of evil.

      @Brian The fuck you on about? You can call a black man or a japanese man an idiot and not be called a racist. It's when you call him a nigger or a chink (which is the wrong fucking derogatory term to begin with making it a double whammy) that you're called a racist. And rightfully so.

      @@WalkerRileyMC Clearly you haven't read the new definition of racism. Or seen the numerous trivialities for which people are decried as racist.
      The definition is now so broad and assumptive that virtually anything can be racist. People are called racist to shut them up and discredit. And it's similar for sexism, transphobia, etc.

      @@nomoturtle1788 True...but you must acknowledge the levers that can be pulled. Especially the one that says, 'Yes, Max is a buffoon, he is white, but it was white people who had a choice about it, created it, controlled it, paraded it' . The white creators also chose to recruit a ready made-for-the-masses, by-the-masses stereo-type - the Asian stereotype. Overly serious and articulate but in capable of seeing his own shortcomings and crippled and stigmatized by his pronunciation. 'poor' pronunciation is a easy money - you can bank on it, for giving laughs at the expense of the pronuoncer. Sometimes it is graceful and nice, but the choice is with the 'laugher' not the 'laughed-at'. It's about having choices. But I agree with what you say.

      The thing is, the minorities aren’t the butt of the joke here, it’s Max, he’s just dumb, he’s not trying to make fun of his accent he just can’t figure it out, it’s much more tasteful than a lot of the jokes around these topics, and actually funny compared to a lot of the unoriginal uninspired recycled jokes related to race we’ve had in our media over the years

    Wow, I was remembering this completely wrong. The way I remembered it, Maxwell said "The Craw?" and then the Claw said "No, not the craw, the craw!" and then Maxwell said "Oh, yes, the Craw". But in actuality, the Claw actually DID say it differently the 2 times. It was actually Maxwell who failed to hear the difference, because the Claw's "l" sounds a little closer to an r than a western one, but is still distinct from his "r".

      I have a friend who insists it was exactly the same, but his hearing's bad. He didn't believe me when I explained that it was being pronounced 2 different ways, "craw" and "c£aw".

    • @BladeRunner-td8be
      @BladeRunner-td8be 4 года назад

      I agree and noticed that right away the first time I watched this episode. It's forgivable that so many think he said craw imo because of the reason you give. And Leonard Strong is not even Asian, he's from the U.S. and American making it all the more impressive that he pulled that subtle pronunciation off.

    • @goodmaro
      @goodmaro 4 года назад +2

      @@BladeRunner-td8be That's not hard, I can pull it off easily. People seem to be most impressed by some of the easier parts of acting. But then, I have a little practice from languages with trilled "r", which this sound resembles. This "£" is like shaking out a rug once or cracking a whip once, with your tongue. The trick is to stop it quickly enough to avoid sounding like a Spanish or even the shorter French "r".
      The really impressive voice actor there is Don Adams, who did his whole part in an unnatural voice. Of course, he'd been using it for most of his comedy career. He delivers all those lines in a kind of grimace, cheeks and lips pulled wide. It's a kind of falsetto produced by the mouth rather than the vocal cords. Like, try to talk while smiling very hard; keep that up a while and see how it feels! I think I remember his having said his agent, early in Adams
      's standup comedy career, encouraged him to use it more.
      However, there's also cheating. My friend John Chodes wrote and produced a play, "Frederick Two", about Friederich II von Hohenstaufern, and afterward introduced me to his lady friend who played a Levantine harem girl. I complimented her on her accent, only to find out it was her natural speaking voice; she was Greek! I told John, "That's not acting, that's cheating!"

      @@goodmaro Some people have the gift of talking in different accents this is true. In my youth I had a friend, Jim Black, who met up a group of people in our favorite tavern and they were from across the pond as they say, speaking with an English accent. He spent the whole night with them talking with their accent and they didn't have a clue that he was from the U.S. It's a gift in my opinion.

      It was un-PC but Don's attitude never had bad intentions while doing his lines. He made us believe he was genuinely trying to understand the diabolical Asian actor Leonard Strong. A big part of Don's shtick in that show was getting everything wrong and not understanding what was actually going on making The Craw scene work well even though it was un-PC. Leonard Strong gets a payback line which was also un-PC when he said, "you all look alike to us" which was not only funny but at least partially made up for what went on with "The Craw".

I laughed my head off.when I was 15. Now, at 68.......I appreciate it MORE !! The Laser Blazer" episode was Epic with the funny Mel Brooks and Buck Henry humor. Also, I believe in this episode The Craw's muscle guy without a younger ?? The Craw says something to Max like: "This is Bruno. Unfortunately, he has lost the power of speech".
    Then Bruno makes a noise saying something as if he's trying to speak but it's inaudible. Max asks The Craw : " What did he say ?"...
    and The Craw says : " He said unfortunately, I have lost the power of speech ". That totally Brooks. Nice distraction during this historic time. BAP

Don pretends not to hear the difference between craw and claw. It was Don's ability to play dumb combined with how pissed off The Claw was about his "inability" to hear it correctly which made that part of the scene funny to me.
