Most posters, deservedly, comment about the genius of Buck Henry and Mel Brooks in creating "Get Smart". Because both men are famous, it's easy to not realize that Leonard Stern was not only head writer but the producer of "Get Smart" for all of it's run. He was a comedy legend in his own right, having written for "The Jackie Gleason Show", helping Jackie Gleason to develop "The Honeymooners", writing some of the most memorable episodes. He also developed and wrote for "The Steve Allen Show". He did the same work AND executive produced "MacMillan and Wife", "The Governor and J.J", and the cult classic, "He and She". It was Leonard Stern, along with Don Adams that maintained and added to the Borscht-Belt type satire that Mel Brooks and Buck Henry created for "Get Smart". It would be a disservice not to acknowledge the enormous influence of Leonard Stern had on the form, nature, and hilarity of "Get Smart".
My fave exchange in the Pat Paulsen episode: "You guys were mean to me on the baseball team... Always throwing balls at me." "Ace.... You were the catcher!" "Doesn't matter!" 😄
Pat would have been an amazing regular cast member, but Monday was his bowling night... 😉 (Line was used by Paulsen to answer why he wouldn't have been able to go to the inauguration, had he won the 1968 presidential election.)
The Caan and appearances were in the same 1969 episode. I waited for Caan's billing back then, I had no idea how he was. He was billed "Rupert of Rathskeller as Himself". I learned about five years ago he had been reluctant to be on television as his movie career was just beginning.
It is easy to see why the actors would appear as a guest. They worked with talented and funny regulars and they had such great lines to deliver! I was in high school when this debuted and I remember when Robert Culp and Martin Landau spoofed themselves as inept spies. Still one of the funniest shows, thanks to Mel Brooks and Buck Henry.

Also guest-starring in the Romero episode was Julie Sommars, who went on to star in another Leonard Stern-produced program, The Governor and J.J., and years after that, played Andy Griffith's courtroom nemesis/love interest on Matlock.
