For nearly all of our history, humans consumed no grains, and our bodies are designed to work very well without them. Today, however, grain-based foods are by far the number one source of calories in the American diet. While whole grains can be a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, the toxic amounts we eat contribute to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Plus, most of the grains we eat-even whole wheat-are turned into flour products which have a higher glycemic index than table sugar.
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk about why grains are such a contentious food, how to tackle the pros and cons of whether it belongs in your diet, and which grains are actually okay to eat.
This episode is brought to you by Mitopure and LMNT.

My parents lived to be old. They had a garden. They walked and talked with each other, every day. They laughed and had a sense of humor. They ate eggs, sausage, and home made biscuits. They danced in the kitchen. They read a book a day! and did some sort of cross-word puzzle or brain exercise. It was a different world when I was growing up in the 50's. The sky was blue, our water was clean, the soil wasn't contaminated. It was half the population of humans. Wildlife flourished.

Yes! I saw 7 cardiologists and did keto to lose weight, and it worked. All 6 said no meat because, because my dad and grandparents died exactly the same way and the same age. So I began doing keto and lost weight. I kept carbs below 50, and after 3 weeks, all cravings were gone completely. When I eat carbs, I crave food. When I eat low carbs ,I allow myself to have 1 cheat meal ,within reason, on Saturday or Sunday . I get right back on track. My best blood work has been chicken and fish, vegetables stir fry and buying a fresh cauliflower and frying it in olive oil with bacon and onions ,garlic, ginger, and peppers. I'll put it on a piece of naan bread I make with no sugar. I use stevia packets for my tea and limit those to 6 a day. My blood work is excellent and blood pressure is perfect and I used to be a smoker and cardiologists suggested an angioplasty ,my stress test I didn't pass, but when cardiologist went into my heart there were zero blockages. My follow-up is next week, but the only other thing that it could be is the silent killer I'd never hear of is called microvascular blood vessel disease. Your blood vessels get blocked, and there's no way they can even see that during an angioplasty . I dread having another angioplasty, but with my family history, I'm glad it's over with . I have learned to start eating butter and olive oil, MCT ,coconut, and avacado oil. [ It's similar to if you have an MRI of the brain, and it shows that white matter ,that's your blood vessels, and it causes dementia or alzeimers, etc. It's important to eat omega 3@6 fatty foods . I know a woman who had a perfect scan at 60, and at 62, her brain was covered in white lesions . So remember, our hearts can be perfect, but if those tiny blood vessels in the heart don't get enough oxygen ,then the heart's in trouble. If you have varicose veins, they ask you in OR ,if you have varicose veins, you may be at risk for blood vessel disease .

    The key takeaways are:
    1. **Rise in Health Issues with High Grain Consumption:** Hyman correlates the increase in obesity, metabolic diseases, and other health issues in America with the high intake of grains, as recommended by the 1992 food pyramid.
    2. **Misleading Marketing and Subsidies:** He criticizes the food industry for deceptive marketing of 'whole grain' products and points out the significant subsidies for grain production in the U.S., which contribute to a diet heavy in processed grains.
    3. **High Glycemic Index of Flour:** Even whole wheat flour is highlighted as having a high glycemic index, potentially more harmful than table sugar, and linked to chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and dementia.
    4. **No Essential Carbohydrates:** Hyman argues that unlike essential fatty acids and amino acids, there are no essential carbohydrates. He suggests that the nutrients found in whole grains can be obtained from other sources.
    5. **Problems with Modern Wheat:** The development of modern wheat varieties, such as dwarf wheat, which is high in amylopectin and often treated with glyphosate, is criticized. The increased gluten content in modern wheat is also discussed as a potential contributor to autoimmune diseases.
    6. **Gluten Sensitivity and Celiac Disease:** A significant portion of the population may be adversely affected by gluten, and an elimination diet is recommended to test for sensitivity.
    7. **Misconceptions About Gluten-Free Products:** Hyman warns that gluten-free products can still be unhealthy if they contain refined grains, sugars, and unhealthy additives.
    8. **Impact on Blood Sugar and Metabolic Health:** Grains, even 'healthy' ones, can adversely affect blood sugar and metabolic health, especially in individuals with insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or obesity.
    9. **Gut Health and Overall Well-being:** The discussion links the health of the gut microbiome to a range of conditions and suggests that modern wheat and gluten, among other factors, are partly responsible for prevalent gut-related health issues.
    10. **Recommendations for Grain Consumption:** Grains should be treated as an occasional indulgence rather than a staple. When consumed, they should be whole, organic, and preferably gluten-free. People with specific health conditions may benefit from reducing or eliminating grain consumption.

Interesting note about "ancient grains". The ancient Egyptians, who certainly ate mostly "ancient grains", had sky-high rates of obesity and T2DM, as well as all of the attendant co-morbidities. They had the most advanced civilization of their era, by far, but they got sicker and sicker over time---to the point of virtual extinction. In all likelihood, that was caused by their very high levels of consumption of "healthy whole grains".

Dr. Hyman,I baked my own bread for awhile to try to get healthy bread. Supposedly Jovial Flour out of Great Britain only has 11 strains of wheat in it much closer to the original wheat. It is next to impossible to make good bread with it.. The reasons they have went to engineering the wheat of today are all just like you said. You can get a pancake like piece of bread and it is eatible. The other thing that is just like you said is it is not so very good for you, in my way of thinking. Bottom line is we just have to get hold of ourselves and realize ok, you wanna live a healthy life, or do you want to die young and leave a fat unhealthy memory.

You are correct, doctor, the Bible does state the eating of bread and yes, what was eaten then is not what the masses eat now. The bread the Bible depicts is unleavened bread made with grains that were pure, clean, and not messed with as ours is - they would use whole grains and either grind it themselves or have it done, mixed with very little oil (which was pure) and cooked fresh every day.
You mentioned The Blue Zones. There is one in Loma Linda CA. Have you been there and checked out the people who live there, what they eat, and how healthy they are - how long they live? If not, you might consider it.
Yes, the wheat we have now has been compromised. Just as the soil has been compromised with chemicals that have destroyed it so nothing can grow in it that is healthy or has any vitamins or minerals in the so-called food it renders.
Eat organic, where possible, or at the very least eat non-GMO.

People in the Bible ate leavened bread as well as flatbreads. Jesus compared the growth of the kingdom of God to the rising of leavened bread - see Matthew 13:33. Leavened bread is only forbidden during the period of Passover.

I switched to organic spouted wheat flour to replace white and regular wheat flour. I cook with buckwheat flour for my pancakes. I think it's all the sugar and fast foods killing the American people. Whole grain bread in moderation is healthy. Drinking those ton of sodas in your lifetime will destroy your bones plus give you diabetes plus the ton of sugar from cakes, candy, ice cream, cookies, little Debbie's high in sugar and carbs, hostess high in fat and carbs and the list goes on. I eat two slices of whole grain bread just about everyday with scrambled eggs and some bacon. This want kill you it's the sugar and fast foods killing us. The fat and high sodium in fast food is the leading causes of heart problems. No one cooks anymore and this is just sad for so many young kids. It's off to the sonic and macdonald's to make life easier but look what's it's doing to our younger generation. My mom always cooked our meals and were mostly from the garden. The thing is you can cook a healthy meal with very little money and think of how much you spend every month on fast food. You can cook a meal in less than a hour. I do it all the time. I guess our kids will have to learn to cook because if they don't their life is cut short.

The grains grown today (GMO’d, hybrids, covered in pesticides) are NOT the grains people ate thousands of years ago. Look at the changes that happened to humans after grains were introduced - smaller brains, cavities/dental problems, people got shorter. Dr. Hyman is right on 💯

Obesity is NOT caused by whole grains - its caused by processed food, i.e., PROCESSED grains. Lumping whole grains with processed grains (junk food) is foolish. The FDA currently recommends about a quarter of our diet be WHOLE grains, for good reason. Much research has gone into the new FDA 'Healthy Eating Plate' guideline (notice that NO red meat is recommended. The KETO diet is a cancer, heart disease diet :0 ) Whole grains are nutritious. The fiber actually REMOVES fat from our bodies and cleans the colon. I normally find your videos informative, but I couldn't get past the intro on this one..

    • @reneedubiel466
      @reneedubiel466 6 месяцев назад

@@annjames1837 The current FDA food plate was hardly 'fast tracked'. It is the result of a lawsuit by the nonprofit, Physician's Committee (the previous FDA advisors were all in the pockets of industry). The new resulting food guide is backed by years of scientific studies.
Are you referring to Covid shots?! The science behind those shots were already known - they saved thousands of lives and were instrumental in re-opening our economy. Unlike the Chinese vaccine..

Eliminating all grains has completely reversed my awful perimenopausal symptoms. Trying to reintroduce them results in horrendous night sweats. I'll stick with avoiding grains thanks. Avoiding them has also cured my longterm constipation, and I was eating high fibre, low processed.

Watch/read Dr. William Davis, he’s a cardiologist. Just a warning, one of his books is called “Wheat Belly”. I eat zero grains. Instead of grains, I instead eat cruciferous vegetables. Eat red meat 2-3 times per week and average about 4 dozen eggs per month. The key was dropping processed sugar and wheat and avoid seed oils. The old FDA pyramid is upside down. Grains should be the smallest amount to eat.
