96 year old car with a connecting rod thrown out the bottom of the engine that has been parked for 70 years, what could go wrong? This is a 1926 Ford Model T coupe, there were 15,000,000 of these cars made and they sold for less than $300 new. Not many originals left in this good of condition. Will it start?

They wanted my Email to "lock in" the 15%... So i entered it and then right after a new pop up that says "Enter your phone number to "lock in" 15% off.
I know that Raycon helps support this channel, but I think people should know how invasive their web site is. I I clicked on the purchase now now button and their web site had all my info populated in it including my credit card number and email and home address. This kind of freaks me out. Also they charge you extra for everything including the charger. Sorry Josh, I hope you look for better sponsors than this.

If nobody has mentioned it. Merlin’s Old School Garage on RUclips does quite a bit of work on these old fords. He has a wealth of knowledge.
Coldwarmotors also has refurbished one of these, but that channel may not be as family friendly as this one.
Yes - I mentioned it before i saw your comment. I've messaged Merlin on fb
Merlin is wicked cool guy,
He drove one from Ohio to wherever he lives in Arizona or Utah?
I'm sure someone will know.
All I know is he lives somewhere warm.❤
We have a 27 touring we picked up a couple years ago. They're loads of fun! They make a great alternative to running around in a golf cart or side by side, way cheaper too! Seems like more folks are discovering Ts and how useful they are especially if you have some property.
Merlin bought a whole garage full of model A and T parts. Some new, never used parts. And he's got experience building those engines, and assembling from scratch.
FYI
My level of respect for solid parents & respectful kids....
Off the charts, thx mom & dad.
I truly think you are experiencing coil problems. Each one of those coils have an internal tinfoil type capacitor which have a very high chance of being shot. I recommend checking the ohms to be sure. I have a ECCT tester and noticed some old coils can spark/buzz but do not throw a constant spark to the plugs thus indicating an internal coil problem. My Model T blew several capacitors in rebuilt coils which caused similar issues you are experiencing. Also your compression is fine.
Lastly, grease the outer roller bearing in the rear axel! There should be grease cups by the end of the springs but ideally you should pull them out to clean and repack them with grease.
😜😜😜😜😜😜
My dad was a Master Ford mechanic in the 30’s - 60’s. I am thinking about him while watching this video. Blessings from Texas.
As a Model T guy this was a bit cringey to watch but you're doing ok. As long as you have at least 30psi of compression you should be fine. Double check your firing order 1-2-4-3 with 1 being at the front. The position of the plug wires really doesn't matter as long as they are fired in the right order from the commutator. The other thing I'd go for is to dig into the carburetor again, there are some hidden passages that tend to be plugged. Also note that it will not run well or at all unless your spray needle adjustment is set perfectly, it will take some trial and error to find the sweet spot and it shouldn't need much adjustment if any after that. Start at one turn or so and go from there. Adjust it slowly in small increments. Also check for a good seal on the intake manifold gasket. Good luck! Model T's are fun cars
Not cringey at all
For not having much, if any, prior experience with Model Ts, Josh did pretty good. But I agree, as a Model T guy, I found myself yelling at the screen with what I would have done.
@@jeffschreier8607 everyone starts somewhere… it’s how you get experience
Watching him go through this without even having a maintenance manual is the crux of the show altogether. If he had have already known everything about this particular car and there was no puzzle to solve it would have been pretty boring. This way the kids get to learn problem solving methods as they work through to the final conclusion of the start of the engine. The dude is smart enough to figure the engine out even though he’s never worked on one before. 😮

As a teenager my father owned a small fleet of model T pickups that he used in his earth moving business. Every weekend he was pouring new rod bearings and every other week end he would pour main bearings. He kept records on his trucks. In 5 years they accumulated over 300,000 miles each.
That’s so cool
That is amazing. Most Model T's were severely worn out by 30,000 miles.

❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just to let you know, I had an uncle that actually owned a Model T. It was a daily driver. He rebuilt many of those engines. You are right, they are poured, then they measured the crankshaft and filed the Babbit down to close to the right size. Put the pistons and rods back in and tightened the caps. If the engine turned over and the rods didn't move, they considered it good, put it back together and ran it until it started knocking and then did it over again. I am 85 years old and a retired auto mechanic and teacher of auto mechanics.
Your vehicle projects are building great memories for your kids who will look back years from now and talk about the things they learned and the fun they had working on these old vehicles. Blessings to you all.

I just came across your page and I am impressed with how well your children are educated in automotive mechanics at their young age. You have taught them some great work ethic that will last them their whole lives. You are a man who blessed with a great family. Now as for the car, awesome buy great family project which I am sure is one of many past and future. Here is something for future reference, when it comes to mounting and dismounting tires like these, use a vise grip on the rim to hold the tire in place as you are seating the bead, that way no one needs to hold it down putting their fingers in danger of getting squished or worst cut-off, that would suck. Great job, great family, great dad. Take care and Keep the Faith.
Squeezee is something else. "I like that you like it." Sweet kid.
Josh, you may need to try a simple Model T timing gage that correctly sets the timing rod location at the commutater. This will change the spark timing, AND you'll probably end up bending the spark advance rod (which you already started to bend) to the correct setting.
Also check the inside of the commutater to verify the contacts are clean. Should start right up!

found this bit of info on the internet about Model T compression.....
The compression ratio of a Model T Ford engine was typically around 3.98:1.
A new, well-built Model T engine with properly lapped valves and fitted rings would have a compression reading around 55 psi.
Most Model T engines would start and run reasonably well with compression as low as 35 psi with the throttle wide open. Anything lower would indicate ring or valve issues.
An engine too low on compression to start, likely below 15-20 psi, would have severely scored cylinder walls, burned valves, or other major problems.
Compression readings in the low-to-mid 40s psi, even after a valve job and new rings, could indicate issues like excessive ring gaps, glazed cylinder walls, or other problems preventing proper sealing.
That’s great 👍👍👍👍

I used to work with a guy that restored early cars, his favorites were AA trucks but i did help with a 1921 T that had an aftermarket aluminum speedster body. If i remember some of the earlier ones had leather main and rod bearings, the valves from a 327 Chevy fit or maybe that was the flathead V8 and the bands from a powerglide can work in the T transmission somehow. The one thing i remember from my time working on that old Model T was the steering gear is actually just under the steering wheel, not down on the frame. Love watching y'all's adventures.

Quick Tip
Valve grinding compound can help loosen frozen bolts and screws even better than heat or oil believe it or not.
This cheat move was told to me by an old timer when I was a young man. After seeing that I had rounded out several button head cap screws while trying to remove sheet metal covers, I was handed a pill bottle filled with valve grinding compound and told to put just a dab in each screw head (BEFORE rounding them out with my allen wrench)
I'll tell you this tho I have even had allen wrenches twist up like a barber pole without rounding out. This also works good on rusted bolts, just stick a dab in your socket (again that's Before you round it off)
That bottle lasted me close to 20 years of rebuilding machine tools.

Vacuum/intake leak? Maybe the washers at 45:54 (looks like they have been added on) on the 3 and 4 intake bolts/(clamp downs?)? It does need quite a bit to draw in from the carb for a 4 cyl. Maybe remove the plugs and slowly crank and check the spark buzz with the stroke timing, confirmation. Did notice what looks like a crack on top of the exhaust manifold too. Or could it be to this at 1:28:18. Sorry if this confuses the issue. Please keep as original as possible. Great job Wawa, both on the wheels and piano, btw.

Great video! My Model T touring car is a 1922. I’ve completely gone through the running gear from the radiator to the new bronze thrust bushings in the rear end. I love driving it. Your “T” appears to be a mix of years. It looks like a ‘26 or ‘27 engine. The serial number will be stamped on the block above the radiator hose. The piece in the “mining” equipment box is a commutator (timer) for the ignition system. I love that you own such an iconic piece of Americana. I with I could be there helping you bring it back to life. There are several places to purchase parts for the old car. One of my favorites has been Langs, or Schneiders (check spelling) or Ecklers.
Just a few observations regarding my T that are different than yours.
1. My coil box is mounted inside the car below the dash.
2. My firewall is wood.
3. My fuel tank is under the seat.
4. My hood sides have a lot fewer slots in the sides.
I may be wrong but I’m of the opinion your Model T is closer to a ‘25 with a ‘26 or ‘27 engine in it.
Just love me some model T Sleeperdude Family Style. Got my popcorn dose and fresh sugar free coke.

After Durant kicked them out of GM, the Chevrolet Brothers made speed parts for Model T Fords. Frontenac offered everything from hot rod cylinder heads to complete T-based race cars. Happiness Is Sleeperdude Saturday ! and it is a Vintage Ford video ! that is over 2 hours long of Good old Family Goodness. You guys are family. More Scooter and theme music. Funny thing is I was going to send you a Ford model t coil that my dad had in the fan mail
On old rotten tires like those, I get the beads broke down, pry one spot up above wheel and hold it there while I cut through the bead with a cut off wheel on my angle grinder. This lets the rest of the bead come up off the wheel. I then pry up the other bead and cut the bead. This gets the old tires of easy.
Clean off the wheels with a wire brush and prep for paint, then paint them. This helps the new tires go on easier.
Ok thanks
If I remember right, they didn't have plug wires, they had strips of copper that went from the plugs to the Magneto.
I have a feeling it's your coils. If you can't find those types of coils, maybe you can find a way to retrofit modern ignition coils and distributer. I really love the way your family gets involved. Your kids are very lucky.

Soooo close. I watch a lot of you tube channels that do “will it run” saves and I’m always baffled that no one ever checks the engine compression before they go through all the work of a revival. It will be interesting to see how you bring that 40lb number up. I was wondering if shooting in a little 30 weight oil in to each cyl to bring up the compression just enough in start up might fire it off. Good luck on this one ❤👋🏻😁

I watched a video about the model T in the factory, the babbitt bearings having 0 tolerance and they take and strap rear wheels to rollers and with it in gear it spins the motor over and wears the tolerance into the babbitt bearings. I also looked up what the compression should be, new should be around 55psi and it should run as low as 35psi.

1:48:14 "History is usually somewhat of a drag but I gotta make a point, so let's go back to the Model T Ford. The distributor was attached to a rod which ended on the left side of the steering wheel in a lever. The throttle was on the right and you didn't forget which was which, either. To start the Model T you gave it about a quarter throttle and retarded the spark all the way by moving the lever up (if I remember correctly), then you went out and cranked the engine over. The choke wire came out of the radiator where it was handy and a vitriolic vocabulary was almost a necessary stock in trade. If you forgot to retard the spark the engine would fire backwards and the crank would either break your arm, tear off a thumb, throw you over into the ditch or all three."
John Muir, "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive"
My dad who was stationed at Laredo Airforce base in Laredo Texas in the 50s told me about a wrecking yard that had literally Isles and isles of Model A And Model Ts. He said he went back around 1963, to visit my grandparents. And went back to that junkyard.Everything was gone. My uncle said he heard some guy came and bought the contents of the entire yard. He said, he hoped that story was true, because there was at least 100 cars there in 57. Would be a shame they got crushed, as a lot of them were very complete vehicles.

Your heart must of stopped when that wrench slipped on that tire stand! Your daughters and son are everything to you and Marge. Everyone can see the worry and fear you faced in that instant. Its easy for us to forget what you and Marge go through every second your children assist you. We are so blessed that Jesus protects and watches over all of you.
Your the only youtuber I can watch for over 1 hr

Seeing WaWa play piano at the end raises a burning question: When is she going to learn to play the Sleeperdude time-lapse music?
Careful buying parts for that. 2 weeks from everywhere. I watch a guy whose channel's name is Iron Trap Garage. They are out of Pa. Near where i grew up. Anyway, they buy & sell old Ford parts & would be a good place to check for say the carburetor. They may even rebuild it & send. Good place to check. If he doesn't have it, he knows who to check. Tho Mortske could have one. Ty for taking us along
Hey Josh... Wizard engine components were private label items sold by Western Auto.
I started working at the local one here in Minden, LA when I was 16 years old... worked there off and on for 25 years. Western Auto put Wizard on EVERYTHING... car parts, tools, lawn mowers etc.
Oh wow
Well done on the piano!!!!

Woohoo! I'm praying the Sleeperdude family can get this beautiful piece of history to run. 🙏🙏🙏
I don't usually comment, but I can't resist to share a good story. I was talking to an oldtimer friend of mine, and he used to have a friend that worked at a shop that welded chassis for race cars (he was a weld x-ray technician). He said that at lunch time, these old boys would get to talking about the old days, about racing model T's. These old guys would talk about racing modified model T's at dang near 100 miles per hour. At first he didn't think it was true, but after hearing multiple stories from multiple people, he came to believe it. Now from what little I understand, even at 40 mph (the max speed of a stock model T) an old Lizzie wants to pull itself apart. At any rate, thanks for the video, always enjoy your content.
