  • Replacing the valve cover gasket on my 2009 Mazda 6 after noticing that it was leaking a bit of oil.
Disclaimer: I am also learning as I am going along. I do not claim to be a professional or that I am doing things the proper way. I am just vlogging how I went about replacing the valve gasket and always encourage everyone to do their own research before starting a new project on their car.

The way I got around taking off the boys on the ignition coils is I just put on a regular socket and removed it from the ratchet. Then I put the ratchet over the socket. You won’t be able to attach the ratchet all the way into the socket but it will go in JUST enough for it to catch and you can start turning the socket to loosen the bolt. Good luck guys!

The hardest part are those bolts on the left side that have a plastic tab over them. I tried watching the tutorial and did not understand how you got those off besides practically breaking the plastic tabs. I also lost the part where there is pushable tabs to release the teething pressure on the bolt to remove the plastic fasteners.

just did this after replacing spark plugs, noticed the two middle cylinders were drenched in oil. When you look at the design, there's not many bolts around the center gasket areas. seems after a while, it's a good idea to pull the plugs and see if oil is present. otherwise the mazda 6 has been great at 190K now.

The VVT actuator seal should also be replaced when doing this job, as it cannot be removed and installed with the cover in place.
