This is the reference we use a lot in the outdoor schedule esp in the provinces. In cities, the shooting is usually in hotels and condos or colleges where everybody gets aircon and bottled water ( if not mineral) , but in provinces especially when we have to go to the rural outdoor shoots, most have to be under a tent with these small handheld fans.. and the newbies and extras are all sweating and drinking iced water from chilly bins..

Don't hold back sarcasm--ever! I speak for many I'm sure when I say your personal experiences turned into observations are gold. I know something about Hollywood (show business, not the metaphor) from living there and having friends in the industry. I know the casting couch is still real and the pool parties for young men and vulture Uncles do go on, just more hidden. Thanks for your efforts for us.

I have watched episodes 1-7 of War of Y. The concept of the series is very interesting. The execution is good but not great. My hope is that the show is a wake up call to problematic fans and behind the scenes staff as well. The manager war story line is like watching a car accident. It's horrific but you cannot look away.
I enjoy BL for what it presents onscreen but do not care about the actors' orientation, dating history etc. I do like to learn about new projects or a bit about their personal lives as it relates to travel or food.

I agree some of the early episodes made no sense but they were the ones that made me think about fan behavior ie wanting explicit scenes and complaining if they’re aren’t enough. These scenes don’t come without consequences for the actors and there is pressure from fans to push the limits.

Oh, yay! I was hoping you would offer your thoughts on the series. :)
I'm really enjoying it so far. Like you, I wish the direction and editing was better. Some of the characters' motivations are unclear. Ep 8 was actually confusing. Part of the reason for that is the in-show texts were not translated. I'll rewatch on Gaga this weekend.
I knew the casting couch was real. I figured the actors are treated as commodities. I think that's common in the entertainment industry here, too.
I had wondered about how many (if any) actors caught the feels for their partners. I know that happens sometimes in regular m/f series. It stands to reason that it could happen with BL, too, if the actors are bi/gay. (I know that most are straight).

    • @blcritic
      @blcritic  2 года назад +2

Yeah some of the actors caught the feels for their BL partners too... The scandal of Mew Art was solely based on that.. similarly, there are others too.. especially when the actors are like 15-16 years old, and they had to do a lot of fan service.. sometimes being too young they get carried away. it is kinda like grooming.. when all the producers.. the fans .. almost everybody around them constantly tell these young actors to act all lovey dovey with their ship..

I would rate it 8.5 just for different subject matter. I have seen only Billy -Seng part as of now. It was disturbing. The harsh reality of show business - I would rather not know. Acting as a career is man made. It has no purpose except for entertainment after a hard day Or days at work or from life. This profession is not of life & death importance nor like agriculture caters to basic necessities like food.
Seeing exploitation in this profession shows how low human nature can be. This profession is disposable so i wish actors would n't compromise their dignity, self respect for some fame & adulation & extra money. War of Y has directorial & storyline loopholes but i think it's one of the best of Thai Bls. I think Bad buddy & War of Y will be pioneers and remembered for a long time in thai bl genre.

I'm not a fan of the "bl behind the scenes" stories like War of Y and Call it What you Want". They supposedly are created to show the audience what really occurs during the production of series, but I think the main purpose is to provide titillation. Maybe if I were a "toxic shipper", I would be more appreciative of these depictions. As a mere bl viewer, I have no idea whose real life trials and tribulations are being fictionalized in War of Y.

I must admit to enjoying the titillation 😅 but I think there’s also real benefit to this type of story. I actually saw a comment the other day scolding someone else for being toxic/inappropriate by saying “Haven’t you been watching War of Y?” Yes, it’s over-dramatized for entertainment, but the premise resonates with those paying attention and it brings the conversation to the surface. The daytime soap-level dramatics are just the tasty cherry on top. 🍿😋

I do not dislike War of Y and I find that I keep wanting to watch more but it is like picking up a tabloid news paper at the local 7/11 and thinking oh this can not be real. As you have said there is a very solid story there, many stories and if they had done it with honesty and realism it could have been great but instead they have over fictionalized the stories and made it like day time tv drama. Maybe it was fear, if it had been to real maybe someone would loss face, omg can't have that. For those of us who know it is kinda a guessing game, was that about ??? OMG haha.
I think so far the casting has been good, I really like Billy, he was one of the few bright spots in SCOY, hope he does not get stuck in that ship. Goes to my bitch about casting ships and not individual actors. Not a big fan of Seng, he was much better than in SCOY but he does not come across as a hot up and coming actor to me. He has a kinda sly charm better suited to comedy. I like Gung and Korn and 6 was the strongest episode for me as well. I agree,Tai Penpak as Pan's agent was great, haven't we seen her before, haha. Have not seen the other stories yet but seems like 5 episodes is to much per story based on what we have seen, with better story telling and editing 4 would have been better. We are not to the end of the second story yet and I am ready to move on. The spicey scenes have been good and not to over the top. (Maybe we are going to need a great kisses of BL 2022). But early bl had spicey too before the big crack down. Maybe I better post this before I loss it again.
    Just a few notes:
Once again, ep 4, note a big fan so far, it is very story driven and not a real fan of the story.
More than Words, I am on episode 9, it is very slow paced and quirky but reminds me of all those indie gay films I use to watch all the time. It is so amazingly REAL, I really love it. Indie bl series haha. BLC take time to watch it, stick with it, it starts slow. Binge watch it is the best. Interesting what they do behind the end credits.

@@blcritic You know I don't just study these series but the social media around them. I have been very interesred in the YinWar ship and find they have been very transparant about things particularly Yin in interviews. So is this the ship where they act like a couple ( they say they don't do fan service, just what they feel) say they are brothers but are a real couple. What is very interesting is how War has been changing the narative of their relationship from him being in the wifey roll to the more dominate daddy role, (which he is in real life). In earlier RUclips videos you can see War objecting to having to wear the more fem outfits. In their most recent fan meet in Korea, War was dressed more masculine and showing his musles were as Yin had a rather fem outfit on. Both Yin and War have their own RUclips channels, a lot of it is kinda stupid, I find Yin's more interesting (Anan Wong) because he tends to say what he thinks, (War has complained about it). The episode you should really watch is 12, Yin does drag, amazing and very telling, he loved it and was good. Saw a clip of War at the Siam fashion show to watch Yin walk the runway. He had Talay on one side of him and Nat Nuwea on the other, interesting.
The most recent episode of 180 Degrees Longitude was just WOW, waiting for your review of that one.

I just finished episode 10 today and the last 5 episodes have been good with Gung and Korn. I've got to say I disagree with you about Billy and Seng. I think they were extremely good in here but their episodes did suffer a little due to the support cast's acting. If you only watched the first episode of Secret Crush then you missed a great bl. I love Billy and Seng equally like I do most of the actors I watch. I don't really have favorites because I think it takes a lot to do this job especially if they're straight but Seng at times was Oscar worthy. That maybe overstating it but he was excellent. I was a little disappointed by how episode 10 ended but the series isn't over yet. Starting next week there are some new actors I've only seen in previews for War of Y. First and Toru from last years Y Destiny are in some if not all of the next 5 as a side couple I believe because their episodes are the last ones entitled "Wife". If I had to give it a number right now I'd say overall it's an 8 for me. The first 5 were 9.5 and 6-10 were about 7.5. I urge you to watch Secret Crush. I was a little annoyed by the cat and mouse games Billy played with Seng but to me it's a 9.5 only because of the first few episodes. The side couples were good too but they missed a great opportunity with OppNut!

The Billy Seng part was good as I said in the review, I had issues with the editing and direction more and Billy showed a lot of promise. Seng was good, but I thought it could have been a bit better as it was supposed to be his story overall. I am yet to watch episode 10. I watch this one also. This industry is very shitty. The managers are like hyenas and actors are not actors, but a commodity.I did not enjoyed the first story with Pun and Nott and their manager. Pun had a horrible personality. But we found out, why he was this way.His manager was a pimp, she literally sold Pun to the men👎.But I think, that some actors and actresses are okay with that, to sleep wih someone, to get a role. And the managers in the second story... I watched recent episode today and the way the physically attacked each other, like in the Middle Ages🤔.And I was suprised when Bew decided not to be a good kid anymore...And I still do not get it, what is the P and Dew thing in this series.

Well the industry is a very bad place. Sometimes the actors and managers are trapped by these uncles.. like deliberately separating them while they are on outdoor schedule which looks like an accident.. and the actors are made to drink soft drinks contaminated with date r*pe pills and you know what happens after that. And sometimes these people are so powerful that you don't have any other option than to shut your mouth. I guess 5-6 years down the line we will get a lot of 'me too' stories, a lot!

I don't think that the "toxic ones"would appreciate this series, because 1)it will make them question (even though they don't want to)things about why they need so desperately to fantasize that their pairing is "real", 2) why they need to have their "favorite pairing" to be cast as a couple in any project, be it BL or a lakorn, 3) why they are so threatened with the possibility of one half of their "favorite pairing" gets cast in a role, that pairs them with a female actress (that poor young actress named Tu from GMMTV's F4 was put through the wringer for over a year)! I know that most of the outrageous things are fictional, but it's calling out things that are very questionable about the BL industry, that frankly most viewers, really don't want to know about.

Frankly speaking, i am a bit worried about the situation of BL now.. because what I have seen in the Lakorns is happening in BL. A lot of actors are ready to do everything to get even a small part in lakorns.. and now because of the popularity of BLs a lot of male actors will take it as a shortcut to fame. Now you can see a lot of actors are ready to do extreme NC scenes which they themselves are not comfortable of. I do not have problem with NC scenes, it is part of the job of actors, but in Thailand, the society is really conservative, and actors themselves do not prefer doing that in front of camera. In fact, I have seen a lot of the popular actresses get teary eyed if they have to do a lot of takes for kiss scenes too.
