If you cover Nintendo DS games that are japan only you have to review Jump Ultimate Stars. I wasted years of my life playing that, its excellent with friends (kinda bad without(enemy ai isnt special and takes some time for unlocking everything)) its basically shonen jump's super smash brothers with some mechanics from marvel vs capcom. You can even Za warudo.

Yeah, THAT font you've mentioned in the beginning is called NewRodin Pro DB (or at least it's the name for one of its modifications). I actually noticed it too quite some time ago - it's the PSP system font, and the primary UI font for MGS Peace Walker snd Final Fantasy XIII at very least. After noticing it across different Japanese games I did some digging on it. It's produced by the company FontWorks as credited in the PSP system menu. That font really gets around, I presume to this very day. And well deserved too, it's damn sleek and classy. Great video as always, this kind of content is what I watch RUclips for. If even some font is mentioned that like a few dozen people ever purposely thought about outside of the professional design circles, then what is there not to enjoy? Peace :)
Nayuta no Kiseki is actually AMAZING. My second favorite PSP game, and it's an Action RPG more in common with Ys than Trails. Also it has FAN TRANSLATION IN ENGLISH. Go play it now, thank the translators later. Go.
Man, the past few times I've seen you show off Boku no Natsuyasumi, I get the incredible urge to just lay down looking at the screen and watching all of the backgrounds in motion. Yo, Nayuta no Kiseki is the shit. Pretty good environments and art design for the system, tight gameplay, and absolutely banging soundtrack, as one would expect from Falcom.
Hello Thor, your style and authenticity is amazing! Even though I am too young to know a lot of the games you talk about the way you edit your videos and the way you talk about what interests you is really good and keeps me interested. Thank you for doing really interesting videos!
I know enough Japanese to play through most games and I played Boku no Natsuyasumi 4 a few Augusts ago. It still sticks out in my mind as a wonderful gaming experience.
There was an anime based on these “horny age” games, it’s called The World God Only Knows. The story is about a gamer who plays a lot of these “horny games” (and is really good at it, like statistics, maths guy) and suddenly gets thrown into a supernatural battle between good an evil or something, where his relationship skills playing the games actually helps him save the world or something. Dude even has a PSP in the anime (it wasn’t named a PSP because licensing, but it’s definitely is a PSP equivalent).
Much like the games you cover, this channel is peak chill. Getting to understand these niche, 'forgotten' games was the biggest motivation I had in learning Japanese. Strongly suggest you at least give it some thought, Thor!
Yeah, this video was made for me I got a PSP 2000 like a week ago or something Wowie, Thanks ThorHighHeels! Time to take some notes on games I can't understand Btw if you're gonna use real hardware, get a external cable for the 2000 and 3000 Doesn't look half bad
What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord? is A good and rarely heard of PSP game, if you can find it. Crisis Core, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, oh and Gladiator Begins are all pretty great as well.
If you don't mind custom firmware, you can run the games on adrenaline on a PS Vita. I recommend doing this as they run just as well and there is a hack to share your video over USB to your computer (also available for PSP) and you can connect your PS3/PS4 controller. Depending on your CFW, you can set the USB to transfer data from the UMD
I knew Boku no Natsuyasumi was gonna be in this vid :D I thought I played trough so much of the PSP library, but here you come around and slap a whole new load on the table to get trough. Can't wait to get to it!
I look forward to your videos more than any other youtuber my man, always quality always actually showing me stuff I have never seen before. Keep up the great work man!
If you're interested in the Boku no Natsuyasumi series, there's 2 other games that might interest you: いなか暮らし also called Inaka Kurashi Nan no Shima no Monogatari (PS2) and 放課後少年 also called Houkago Shonen (DS) They're variations of similar ideas, look them up ;)
I am so happy to know there's someone else out there who loves Raw Danger. I absolutely adore that game, even with all its issues and B-Movie grade voice acting. I totally agree that it was a game that was too ambitious for its own good. Now that I know there's a fourth game in the works, I'll have to try and get a hold of it for sure.
So I looked it up and apparently it had already been released on PS4 in 2018, but this upcoming "Plus" version is getting a worldwide release on April 7th. Definitely going to pre-order that for sure!
FoxMan yup, I’m so excited for it! My only problem is I want it on Switch but the only gameplay footage I saw...was kinda bad. If the switch version isn’t gonna run well I’m picking up PS4 version.
One cool feature of the Psp Yakuzas is that it had a character creator for its VS multiplayer. Shame is online for multiplayer is practically nonexistent. Well, it "works" for PPSSPP but is a 3fps mess.
ah yes, the psp, the little handheld that half of my childhood was focused on, had a lot of impressive ports such as the literal 1:1 port of test drive unlimited which has the entire map(which is bigger than all of the gta games combined, and somehow it doesnt feel bland) and content, there was also the weird wacky spin offs that you already mentioned, haha, good video tho and actually thanks for reminding me of the existance of the psp yakuza game(s)
jesuz someone else who knows about Chulip, Boku no natsuyasumi, and the beauty of Disaster report games. hahaa nice. I still want a fan translation of Bokura no Kazoku - My Family Growing Up in the 21st Century
Another reminder I need to try out those Summer Vacation games, because it looks fantastic and _I'll never likely to get vacations after I get a job...._ Your description of PSX games just struck a chord with me. "Pixel art slapped on polygons". I think I understand why I love those games so much. And ngl, those Yakuza spin-offs look rad as fuck, despite being burnt out on the series right now. Love your transitions from one game to next in the video. And your stylings are rad as ever.
2 years later, better than never, Disaster Report 3's translation patch is releasing in July 2022. Now you can enjoy the chaos & drama while actually understanding what the fuck is going on.
I guess someone will be happy to know that a partial Fan Translation (Translates 100% of the story stuff and some menus and items here and there) has been released. The rest is basically illegible tue to font shenanigans, but if anyone knows how to play Yakuza, it's perfectly playable.
It's a bit late but now a near 100% translation patch is also out, the only thing missing currently are the hostesses but other than that about 99% of the game is now fully translated and playable for anyone interested in kurohyou
you'll soon apreciate winter if you go to places where the summer is 30°C plus every goddarned moment of the day and you have to take a shower every bloody hour.
I had a PSP so things like Tactics Ogre, Radiant Mythology and Kenka Bancho were something that graced me ones the "Custom Firmware" became available. But yeah, Boku No Batsuyasumi, Black Panther and Disaster Report 3 are things I still wish I could play. I don't understand Japanese, so that's honestly the only thing stopping me and just hoping for an English fan translation, but finding an ISO of them isn't that hard these days.
24:24 Amagami fandom still alive in Japan (and some extent of Taiwan and SEA region). Almost new fanart every week, lewd adult doujinshi, and nice cosplay every Comiket. Even Enterbrain, the publisher behind the game, still making an annual Amagami event. I use heroine from Amagami as my photo profile on Twitter, and suddenly random Japanese Amagamist followed me out of nowhere. Sadly, Western fans mostly only know the anime adaptation....
I just stumbled on your channel trying to find Racing Lagoon playthrough, really liking your stuff man. I just found out about the AI services on retroarch which can translate games on the fly which lead me to finally play Racing Lagoon. If you're using stand alone emulators and not retroarch you could do something similar by using Ztranslate.
I really love some of this kind of Videos because I can have Great Recommendations on what kind of games I should play from a Confusing Pool of Underated Games.
I can't agree more with how great Disaster Report (Raw Danger) is. ESPECIALLY with all the jank. Also apparently earlier this year a new group of people started trying to translate the 3rd game again.
Goddamn, your video's never disappoint Thor, Sundays every two weeks on the mark are my favorite day's, I actually have something amazing to watch as always. I love the PSP for what it is even though Sony didn't decide to continue doing more with it in the past, there are quite a few games I'd love to get my hands on but most of them are Japan Only and sadly my PSP doesn't play Japanese game's, I guess I will have to emulate that shit in the future at some point to try them out.
Great news! Yakuza, and the first Boku no Natsuyasumi game for the PSP both got patches! The natsuyasumi game is getting a spanish patch this summer but will get an english one shortly after!
I've played Kurohyou twice (haven't finished the second lol) and the combat is legit so much fun, the emphasis on fighting styles and training made it feel so unique compared to the common Yakuza Beatmups. The fixed camera and low-ish quality world gives it such an interesting vibe, especially paired with the story and having to run from the cops often. It feels like you're viewing your character through security cameras.
My psp served me and my bro quite well when we had a power outage and the only thing with charge was my psp so we huddled over it and watched 2012 on umd and the power came back on just as it was finishing.
👍👍E.D.F. games are actually incredibly fun. Turn your brain off for A while and destroy waves of enemies. Kind of like the Dynasty Warriors(and all others from Koei)series. If you ever get the chance, there's A game called R.A.D. on the ps2. I never see or hear anything about it really, and the controls are so dated, but unique. The camera angle is annoying at first, but cool. You control A huge robot, but as A person on the ground, with A remote control. So, it makes for really cinematic moments, when you actually learn the ropes A bit. Pretty unique, and never played or seen any other game quite like it. Similar, but not quite...there's also some games that came out on ps2 and psp, but have added features. Such as Gitaroo Man(Another good one) or Monster Hunter.
@@ksenolog oh yeah, for sure. Pretty much goes for every series on that lost now also. Some of the Warriors Orochi 4 main characters will kill you in 3 or 4 hits. Pretty solid game tbh though. I took about A 7 year break from series. The chatacter roster is insane.
@@cerebraxis607 Yeah, musou too. I only decently played Gundam Reborn and Hyrule Warriors tho, but I can see where other musou can get really tough really quickly the moment officers will step up their game and you have to learn combos and movesets by heart. Decently meaning playing it further than one time main story beating. WO3, SW4/II, DW7/8 all good stuff. Also do you happen to know about Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate - does it keep now online coop story progression for both people? Cause base game isn't, only for host, which blows.
I think you'd love EDF5. It's a reboot of the series, so it's a great starting point (besides this psp one). The gameplay is better than ever but still janky and the story follows the origin of Storm team, a legendary squad mentioned in previous EDF games. Also shit gets really dark towards the end and it goes places.
I bought most of these imports in UK, sad these never ported to PS Vita, as the ebay prices are ridiculous. Everyone should be able to play these games.
There is no doubt in my mind-Boku no Natsuyasumi would be perfect for me! Its a darn shame I don't no Japanese, because I want to play ever single one of these chill little titles! Why, Japan, why?
Chulip?! Hot damn, you a wild one. Cubivore is definitely my numero uno overlooked hidden gem. It is like Katamari but designed by a drugged up biologist.
"Master. We're in a tight spot! A real tight spot." Such high quality and awesome edited videos, and stil a hidden gem on youtube. I Love your style and videos, good job bro
Have you played the Trails in the Sky series? It's known as the Kiseki series in Japan, Trails series over here. (That Nayuta no Kiseki game you showed is...kind of spin off i guess? More like an Ys game with the storytelling of Trails since they share the same devs) I think you'd like the vibe, it's probably the most developed world of any JRPG series period, the power of them not giving a fuck where you enter into the series, you better have played the previous games cus they aren't gonna recap you on what's happened. Genuinely has both some of the best music in a JRPG I've heard as well as some of the best characters and story, feels like pure PS1 JRPG goodness, but perfected. (It's kinda funny tho cus an entire storyline, the Crossbell games (Zero no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki) are INCREDIBLY important to the current ps4 trails series story (Cold Steel) and they're stuck as japan only PSP games, but thankfully fan translations are almost done)
I tried Cold Steel, and it does not make up for its overated fame. The story is dumb and the characters too cliche, and damn, i hoped the third one would take me out of that stupid school setting, but no, you still do the same stupid trips. I can't undestand how people find this world complex and well developed. Are the other ones (TiTS) any better?
I got a psp for christmas one year, shortly after it came out. Immediately left state for the first time to visit my dad in the middle of a desert. Such fond memories in a rickety shack during stormy nights in Arizona winter playing Metal Gear Ac!d
Since the recent Crayon Shin-chan game is totally based off the Boku no Natsuyasumi serie I was wondering if you played it and how it faired compared to the rest of the franchise. I personally just moon over screencaps of the beautiful backgrounds but it sure makes me wanna play it. Excellent videos, I'm happily going through your backlog.
Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kitan was rather serviceable nu-Persona-like game with pretty cool art direction (and gorgeous magic hanafuda waifu). It will also probably never get translated because of that, some menu and text layouts are too fancy.
I would say the real death knell for weird games is the 3DS - there are still plenty of crazy experimental games on there. Also, the DS had plenty of awesome crazy games - probably more than even the PSP.
For those of you who interested in Disaster Report 3, while there is no translation that you can patch onto the game iso there is this wonderful blog game-time-kouryaku.blogspot.com/2011/03/faq-3.html thanks and credit goes to OshareKeiji for making the guide that literally translates everything from character choices to story cutscenes to item descriptions just everything making the language barrier obsolete! I'd recommend playing with a tablet or phone on the side to look at back and forth for the dialogue. As a long time fan of the 1st and 2nd game, I can say for sure the 3rd game has some of the most emotionally gripping moments since your companion Saki is basically with you the long run. Don't let not being able to read the game text directly stop you from enjoying this wonderful game that I wish was released here. If you have the patience it is a rewarding experience. Also Thank you ThorHighHeels for bringing this series up often, it's a series near and dear to me that was with me during a rough time. It always captivated me that a game series like this could exist and I'm happy it's becoming more and more known because of you! Sincerely thank you!
My PSP-1000 is "too" jailbreaked and runs too many emulators, maybe almost factory reset is in order. Best thing i got for my VITA (also 1st gen OLED version) is an SD-adapter so i dont have to hunt for Sony memory cards and now i have more than one game installed. These videos make me want to play on them even if i stopped playing on "home consoles" because im not going to pay to access games that Sony doesnt care... So many games that i got from PSN were good and nowadays you can find almost all of them online so not that big of a loss...
But for real tho Akiba's Trip is a fantastic action rpg, that just happens to involve exposing vampires to the sunlight via unclothing them. With a small harem side RPG mixed in.
Lol, you should play ‘Disaster: Day of Crisis’ for the Wii if you haven’t already. It’s basically a Disaster Report Clone, with a few more mechanics and themes, though the motion control stuff can be a bit annoying. But yeah, tons of natural disasters and environmental puzzles. You might dig it.
I LOVED the part about jungles in the 32 bit era. Something special about those walls of forestation. Also was that a reference to the hbomberguy video with the VHS grain and Horror?

Will Thor ever get the _Lagoon_ translation he desires?

if my Japanese was better I'd take a crack at it. It seems like a neato game and it's the closest we'll ever get to a fast and furious Square game.

ah yes, the psp, the little handheld that half of my childhood was focused on, had a lot of impressive ports such as the literal 1:1 port of test drive unlimited which has the entire map(which is bigger than all of the gta games combined, and somehow it doesnt feel bland) and content, there was also the weird wacky spin offs that you already mentioned, haha, good video tho and actually thanks for reminding me of the existance of the psp yakuza game(s)
jesuz someone else who knows about Chulip, Boku no natsuyasumi, and the beauty of Disaster report games. hahaa nice. I still want a fan translation of Bokura no Kazoku - My Family Growing Up in the 21st Century
A new video from you always makes my day
Another reminder I need to try out those Summer Vacation games, because it looks fantastic and _I'll never likely to get vacations after I get a job...._
Your description of PSX games just struck a chord with me.
I shall from now on refer to the Trails of the Sky/Cold Steel series as the "Trail Mix" series.
Boku no Natsuyasumi is the quintessential comfy game.
I did not know there was a PSP Yakuza game, the protagonist looks awesome.
That EDF game did actually get localized and ported
To the Vita
In 2016 for some reason
In this video: ThorHighHeels tries to fit the phrase "something fierce" into 1/3rd of the sentences without us noticing.
I just stumbled on your channel trying to find Racing Lagoon playthrough, really liking your stuff man.
I just found out about the AI services on retroarch which can translate games on the fly which lead me to finally play Racing Lagoon. If you're using stand alone emulators and not retroarch you could do something similar by using Ztranslate.
man bokunatsu is one of my fav series and i really wish you would learn japanese to enjoy it fully. shit’s magical
The english patch for Disaster Report 3 is out!!! GO GO GO!!!!
17:31 They're _bonding_ 💕✨
I really love some of this kind of Videos because I can have Great Recommendations on what kind of games I should play from a Confusing Pool of Underated Games.
Zero and Ao no Kiseki, we STILL don't have a translation, but with the PS4 version coming out, there's a chance.
I’ve never subscribed to someone faster than when I heard this man speak highly of Raw Danger because Raw Danger is a work of art
Very very underrated game.
Niiice ive watched so many of these videos i forgot u would make more
Turn your brain off unless it's hard, hardest, inferno. Cause jesus christ those higher difficulty levels require presicion planning at time.
@@ksenolog I'm not sure honestly. I got the initial switch release.
@@cerebraxis607 I see, thanks anyway for replying.
I'm buying it soon
@@lordzooq8987 Hope you like it, look forward to EDF6.
EDF!
Bro you murdered me with that crash bandicoot jungle ass music during that Disaster Report part lmaoo
2:09 this was my favourite psp game. I had hoped there'd be a metal gear acid 3...
Please do an edf vid! There's so much more happening in the games as you get into em
Disaster Report 4 is coming to the states on April 7, 2020 thanks to Nis-America.
Kurohyou has a fan translation for the whole main story and some side activities btw. I like it
PSP got EDF as well? Never knew that somehow
Boi I sure am glad that EDF got fully ported into the outside as a series tho
I love me dumb fun stuff
I bought most of these imports in UK, sad these never ported to PS Vita, as the ebay prices are ridiculous. Everyone should be able to play these games.
Yakuza games are getting fan translations which is exciting.
ngl I love falling asleep while hearing you talk random game related stuff
Not being able to legally play every single one of the Yakuza games makes me so mad.
A real tight spot."
Such high quality and awesome edited videos, and stil a hidden gem on youtube.
I Love your style and videos, good job bro
Love this channel
Speaking of low-poly jungles:
Syphon Filter on the PS1 is that shit 👌
Kenka Bancho series is my all time favorite games for PSP
Have you played the Trails in the Sky series?
It's known as the Kiseki series in Japan, Trails series over here. (That Nayuta no Kiseki game you showed is...kind of spin off i guess? More like an Ys game with the storytelling of Trails since they share the same devs)
I think you'd like the vibe, it's probably the most developed world of any JRPG series period, the power of them not giving a fuck where you enter into the series, you better have played the previous games cus they aren't gonna recap you on what's happened.
Such fond memories in a rickety shack during stormy nights in Arizona winter playing Metal Gear Ac!d
this is what ive needed i have a hacked psp and need good games
Since the recent Crayon Shin-chan game is totally based off the Boku no Natsuyasumi serie I was wondering if you played it and how it faired compared to the rest of the franchise. I personally just moon over screencaps of the beautiful backgrounds but it sure makes me wanna play it.
Excellent videos, I'm happily going through your backlog.
Man....I just love your work. I remember that sentence from your last video: "cheeky bagginess"....still laughing now
Holy shit that Disaster Report 3 opening scene looked chilling, definitely gonna need to get around to it
Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kitan was rather serviceable nu-Persona-like game with pretty cool art direction (and gorgeous magic hanafuda waifu). It will also probably never get translated because of that, some menu and text layouts are too fancy.
I would say the real death knell for weird games is the 3DS - there are still plenty of crazy experimental games on there.
Also, the DS had plenty of awesome crazy games - probably more than even the PSP.
Black Panther was really a gem. The narrator, the moves, story and a really good protagonist, all good.
Hey, I missed Final Fantasy Type 0 in this.
Crikey, PSP came out in 2k4!?
I feel old as Dirt now.
Also I fucking LOVE Akiba's Trip!
One of the very few games I've actively tried to platnum.
Still waiting on a third Dark Cloud game
Man, I miss my PSP and Vita now.

Honestly super surprised you haven’t played Yo Kai watch yet
But for real tho Akiba's Trip is a fantastic action rpg, that just happens to involve exposing vampires to the sunlight via unclothing them. With a small harem side RPG mixed in.
This video was definitely something fierce
Shitty rain, shitty wind, shitty clouds... Yes, living in Nederlands is moeilijk
