      What about all the animals killed by crop farming? All the insects? All the land that wildlife used to live in that sprayed to death by pesticides and pollutes the ground, rivers and streams? The birds that get killed too and the fish. Crop farming kills loads more living creatures than the meat industry does. And animals make ground fertile and good for crops. Without grazing animals, more chemicals are used in the soil to grow stuff. Vegans live in la la land about how they think their diet does not harm animals, it actually harms more animals and it harms the environment. All the toxic supplements sent from all over the world. None of it is natural. All shipped from everywhere. Fruits and veg imported from across the world too. Veganism is the most unnatural diet out there.

    • @DarenC
      @DarenC 2 года назад +55

      @@rl7012 Most crops in many areas are fed to animals. In the US for example, 67% of soy is used for animal feed. Growing crops to feed to animals so we can eat them is terribly inefficient, but in terms of resources and land usage. 77% of agricultural land is used for animal farming, but provides 18% of global calorie supply. By reducing our animal consumption, we'd actually cause fewer incidental deaths, which is the point of veganism.

    A strange thing is, my youngest child at age 8 decided she didn't want to eat meat anymore. She was the youngest of 4 children and loved her menagerie of pets. OK said I and off to the bookstore to purchase a vegetarian encyclopedia and my first vegetarian cook book. Lots of knowledge needed here on my behalf! No way was I cooking for 6 and preparing different meals for each. I had always cooked from scratch anyway so it was just a case of understanding the vital nutrition within the meals. I was in my 30's now in my 70's med free. Fit and healthy and active. Do I save money on not eating meat and now dairy NO I just spend it on nuts and seeds instead. I also don't care enough to argue with people regarding this way of eating. Do what you like and so will I. Great blog by the way and yes I laughed out loud!!!!

    I started a Whole Foods vegan diet 1 year ago. Being a vegan also means watching why type of vegan food that’s consumed because there’s a huge difference. When eating whole plants versus processed vegan foods, one will absolutely feel better, physically, mentally and have better mental clarity. Brain fog, arthritis and other ailments will disappear. It did for me and my husband. He has congestive heart failure and almost died from the disease. A change in his diet changed a lot for us. My arthritis disappeared, his acid reflux disappeared, his heart condition is almost normal. There’s a list of things. So just know being vegan depends on the type of vegan food that digested. Not all vegan diets are the same.

Without being severely malnourished or maybe dead lol. Was amazed absolutely nothing happened not eating meat. No loss of weight, and felt really good, and no different than before. 30yrs later (vegan for the last 28)had no issues. Work a physical job and am a cyclist. @Tyelar Rhead Exactly, it would be like saying "it was the Nazis choice to gas a load of jews, they can do whatever they want" (just like omnivores pay companies to gas pigs and chickens to death now). Or "it was slave owners choice to own a slave" well actually no it's not their own choice if they are harming other humans. These are now looked back on with disgust as atrocities and anybody that was involved with these acts feels shameful. We just need to now extend this thinking to also cover ALL animals and not just dogs and cats 🤦‍♂ and I feel the human race will also look back on this era with disgust too.
      It would have been good if Mark would have cut to some footage of these things he spoke about like the baby chicks in blenders etc because 90% of omnivores have absolutely no idea this goes on so instantly dismiss it as an extreme or exaggerated view. If people listened and researched the truth 90% would turn vegan overnight I'm certain of it.

    • @LifeOptimise
      @LifeOptimise 2 года назад +1

      Completely agree, just like we don't allow psychopaths to kill and eat humans just because they want to, people shouldn't be allowed to stuff millions of birds into a big warehouse and then gas them all to death at 6 weeks old just because they want to, or as Mark referenced keep birds rammed in small cages just to profit from eggs they lay and blend up any chicks they can't profit from etc. We don't have a 'choice' to do whatever we want in life, there are some boundaries that we have placed on what we can and can't do to other humans and dogs and cats that we now need to extend to all animals and wildlife.

I did drink soy milk, but got scared of soy so I quit. I then started using whey protein powder to try to gain muscle. I developed a lump in my chest. Breast cancer in men is rare, but possible. I went to my doctor, and he put me through a series of tests for cancer. I researched what I could eat to help my chances. The documentary "Forks Over Knives" convinced me. I dumped the whey and switched to a mostly Whole Food Plant Based vegan diet. By the time I was supposed to have a biopsy, they weren't able to get a sample, because my lump had shrunk so much. I felt so much more energy on my new diet, so I kept it. I then learned the facts about why others have gone fully vegan. I went 100% around the age of 60. I am now in my mid 60's, and never felt better. I get glowing reports from my doctor and need no prescriptions. Both my siblings have heart disease. Why would you think it's wrong? It's perfectly natural to think that way.
      We've evolved alongside canines over thousands of years as HUNTING companions to find and take down food. This has carried over into modern society as dogs being pets. We've literally grown to love cats and dogs because they've shared a symbiotic relationship with us (hunting and pest control).
      Conversely, we farmed ruminant animals for their nutritional profiles, taste, and partially for dairy (winter can be pretty damn unforgiving for survival.)
      Survival and companionship. Of course many farmers become attached to their livestock over the years, but they're well acquainted with the circle of life, and understand all living things come to an end in order to make way for the next generation. Not to mention, their livelihood depends on it.
      Not picking on you -- eat as you please, at least we still have that freedom left! 😜

I found the switch much easier than I thought and at restaurants that don't have anything vegan, I always end up being offered a chef special amazing creation. It's also much cheaper to eat. I'm from a family of hunters and no particular feelings towards animals, but I firmly beleive it's the logical thing to do for the ethical, environmental, efficiency, easier health and pandemic minimising reasons. I think you'd convert a lot of people through awareness to the fact that you can be that fit, musclular and highly performant while being vegan. I wouldn't have known it was possible.

    This is spot on and so concise. I stopped eating meat and dairy 5 years ago now and often get questions about it when people find out. This video really closely matches my experience - nothing spectacular, surprisingly easy to do, so why not continue. Doesn't bother me what other people do, but honestly I think that if more people were to try it and realise how small that shift really is then they might be inclined to keep it up/ reduce meat consumption.

A really well thought out and put together edit Mark, I think your position and reasoning on being a vegan and how to speak to others about (or not) it is great. I think A LOT of people need to hear this take, whether they've considered veganism or not, and whether they're ever likely to become a vegan or not. Your point about the constant judgy comments or huffing from non-vegans is also very true, even I've noticed it about myself in the past and have pulled myself up on it. Informative, grounded, funny and logical, another excellent video mate 👍

      I don't think any vegan has thought "Hm, I'm probably going to be vegan at some point" far in advance, and yet they became one ;)
      It's mostly about if you think a lot about ethics and your impact based on what you consume or not. Where does it come from? How was it produced, what impact and other types of costs were involved? If you start thinking about that more, you're more likely to drift towards veganism.

    • @panes840
      @panes840 Год назад +1

      @Uptown _Rider I think ethics comes into play with health, too. Let me explain. Here in the UK, SOME people see it as a right to ruin their health due to their addiction to food that is not necessarily ideal, or smoking, or not bothering to take part in "light" exercise let alone moderate. The very same people wrongly assume that the NHS has a bottomless pit of money to rescue them from their foolish, lazy, selfish, arrogant, and ignorant diet and lifestyle choices. To add insult to injury, the naively thi k that their payments to the government in the for of National Insurance is enough to pay for prescriptions, appointments, scans, and surgeries to fix them! I learnt a lot g time ago at university during Mt health sciences degree (27 years ago) that my generation would be paying into the NHS for the previous generation and not withstanding, the costs are in reality eye watering. SOME people also don't wish to pay more taxes. When non communicable diseases such as heart disease, osteoporosis, alzheimers, diabetes and some carers are avoidable, then this knowledge should be known!!!!! But it isn't because big animal agriculture profits are far more important along with big pharma who proclaim to fix you. But you are not fixed. You are patched up and goven medications to keep you alive but not living a truely free elderly existence, and people are brainwashed to believe ill health is inevitable! It is a sick care system, not a health care system. The money involved is eye watering. But the costs either mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and the quality of life as a consequence can for sp many people be dire! Now, big pharma does some great stuff to be fair, but there are a lot of drugs that are simply not needed. What is the point in living longer of your existence is just "getting by." No thanks! But my biggest beef (pardon the punn) is people expexting to be fixed on national insurance stamps that barely in reality touches the sides in terms of cost. The NHS just cannot keep up with the continuous onslaught of peoples attitudes or fix me!!! This has ethical and moral inplicatuoms because such folk are an unnecessary burden to the taxpayer just because they like the taste of pig flesh! I was also told by a lecturer that no amount of public funding would ever cover the cost of health needs, and he said that, which means and I remember this if we took all the taxes, for transport, military, education and police it STILL WOULDNT BE ENOUGH to fund the NHS. And we also have a growing population.
      Any how I hope this gives you another perspective on the health debate.
      With the environmental debate animal agriculture and land use is our biggest issue as it is connected to land pollution, water pollution, air pollution, deforestation, wild life habit destruction, biodiversity loss, soil errossion and biodiversity of soil health loss, fossil fuel use and all these systems rely on nature so ethics come into play here.

The inconsistency with caring for some animals and disregarding others is far too illogical for me to ever justify going back. Before I went vegan I thought id turn into a 65kg rake. Fast forward 9years and a 103k track ultramarathon... 15 Marathons & lots of training runs... its a sustainable lifestyle. For me it's about Animals, Environment & Health but also agree doing something different is courageous & often the better choice. Glad I stumbled across your channel after watching a young man's Row time trial trying to match your 2km row time :) , Cheers from Aus.

    I'm not vegan or vegetarian but I have cut down on meat a lot over the last couple of years. I actually think you're downplaying the benefits a fair bit. You've mentioned it before but the Game Changers documentary on Netflix was a real eye opener for me. It dispelled a lot of myths and I'd recommend everyone watch it. A big consideration for me is the planet and feeding us all. The average person needs about 2000-2500 calories per day. The world grows enough food to provide 5500 calories per day for everyone on the planet. Yet people are starving. Why? Well it's because we feed over half the calories we grow to animals so we can eat them or the things they produce. Which gives a tiny fraction of those calories when eaten. I was quite shocked by this, we shouldn't be having hungry people when there are very well fed animals.
    Not sure I'll ever make it to be vegan although I'm not completely closed to the idea. But I'll try and do my bit.

      Excellent attitude to have. I converted to whole food plant based lifestyle at 51/2 yrs ago to reverse my diabetes. When these carnivores get chronic diseases they may wake. Film Game Changers confirmed what I knew. 3 to 4 days at gym lifting heavy. This video is very interesting. After YEARS of trying to work out with weights and whatnot and not really finding it inspiring for me, not having the drive to do it because I simply don't enjoy it, I moved over to calisthenics and bodyweight exercises about a year ago and I've been having good results so far.
    Since going vegan the bodyweight exercise progress has been ENORMOUS. I assume this is because my strength to weight ratio has shifted a bunch. I think it sped up progress rather than being something that will make my maximum threshold any higher but still. I've been on and off vegan for a long time but this is the first time I've embraced a combination of bodyweight exercise and veganism, and it has been great for me. Might not be for everyone. I am very happy about this though, because obviously these two things are both pretty simple and affordable things. No real need for a lot of equipment.

    For once someone mentions veganism is not a diet. I am vegan and I get tired of people telling me how the bread I eat is not healthy, or somebody they know gained weight while being vegan. Where did people get the idea veganism is a weight loss program? I always have to go into telling them it's about not eating, and exploiting animals. That drives me crazy when people keep saying that to me. Like the question where do you get your protein. Like they were looking on the back of a bucket of fried chicken trying to find out how much protein is it. I did lose 40 lbs because I don't eat junk food, but I can't do that without being vegan. I just happen to make meals that are healthy. That is not the reason I do it.

    nice video - i like that your not trying to tell people what to do :)
    i took the quite different road, like complete opposite.... Carnivore diet - and that trip is certainly something that improved my health ... yeeees i know, im killing animals... i also grew up on a farm.... so, well, for me its natural order of things.
    it has come to the point that when ever i eat a piece of bread, i have headache, sore joints, sore muscles and gut pains the day after... i im not eating bread anymore for sure, im trying out different stuff to my diet to see which ones my body reacts to.
    The meat only diet combined with fasting has produced a body of mine that dont get sore from running/working out/racing. literally ... no pains after work out.. its amazing.
    I would love to see you try out ... just for a month, to change for meat only (fat meat!) - just for you to see the differences, the first 3 days will be hard with missing carbohydrate headaches until the body converts and does ketosis. remember enough salts if you try this, lots of eggs
    and yeah, i do running with my staffy dog - she loves it, as soon as i put on the running shorts she goes crazy, and as soon as i let her of the lease and say "place" she is right behind me 20-30cm away and following me through trails/forrest/parks etc.
    Keep up the good spirit - no matter ;)

      @@ahmoseh3718 pretty much anything that is not processed counts, for breakfast it’s oatmeal with Goji berries and banana and other fresh fruits, as well as walnuts and hemp hearts and Chia seeds. Oat milk in the cappuccino, or ceremonial green tea Matcha. We make our own hummus, so we flavor it with different things like olives or herbs from the garden or roasted red pepper, or whatever. We make our own sourdough bread as well, and yes, we work. There are a lot of recipe books for vegan foods like PadThai or, a lot of Mexican and Asian and Italian dishes can be made vegan. It takes a while to get the repertoire together for having food around, but it’s very important to be sure that you get the protein you need, but watch out for saturated fats, and don’t overdo nuts and coconut as well, as they have high saturated fat contact. Guacamole is great as a spread too. I made my own pizza dough in the morning and then make a pizza for lunch using pesto made from the garden or tomato sauce, made from the garden and then nutritional yeast and mushrooms and onions and whatever else sounds good. @@johnbennett7407 I'm not sure about cure but my diet is a large bowel of porridge with a few blueberries ( I tend to spit out the skin and I also now peel any apples I eat, only one per day but only half in the morning the other half in the afternoon) then I eat a large spoonful of organic smooth peanut butter, then it's off to the gym or I go out cycling. After training I eat four eggs scrambled, two pieces of Salmond and one large sweet potato plus a root vegetable . Around half one I eat a large portion of mashed potatoes (no skins) plus some type of root vegetable and two organic chicken breast. Throughout the day I eat more spoonful's of peanut butter, and between around four and five (last meal) I eat either sweet potato or mashed potatoes, the meat is either beef steak, venison steak, liver, or large piece of white fish along with some shellfish ( I don't eat anything or snack after five until my breakfast the next day at nine ). That's a lot of food but with few calories but it works well for me since I'm 71 and I train almost everyday, a 120 miles per week on the road bike and I also cycle to the gym ever alternative day. But I still have to watch what I consume, as for alcohol, maybe a couple of glasses of red wine or a couple glasses of Guinness once in awhile. Thing is IBS can flare up for no apparent reason, in my youth I trained as a chief so I used to love cooking Mediterranean and Asian dishes but all of that is has been off the menu since my early 30s, onions for example are impossible to eat along with pulses. My view is we evolved to be meat eaters that can consume a small amount of fruit and vegetables rather than the other way around, humans came out of the trees and became carnivorous and their brains grew larger because of that diet.

      @@Insolation1 true but I would express it slightly differently. I would say we started off as largely frugivores. We are believed to share a common ancestor with chimpanzees with their 500cc brains. However we did then apparently start scavenging (as indicated by our low Ph stomachs) and became largely carnivorous. This enabled us to grow our large 1300cc brains and use tools and hunt (resulting in the adaptation of losing most of our fur so that we didn't overheat in the African Savannah running down much fast prey) and then use fire which enabled us to get some nutrition from things like root vegetables and have a versatility that enabled us to spread throughout the world.

You want to stop climate change then don't eat food products out with a 2 to 3 hundred miles radius of where you live or at least keep the food production in your own country. Basically don't import food in fact that goes for most products, don't go on holidays abroad either, only buy clothes once the ones you have are worn out. I'm now 55 and 2 years ago I remembered I was a good cyclist in my better days so I took it up again. I'm now 14 stone and fit by anyone's standards. My cycling performance just keeps on improving according to Strava. I can get up Alpe Du Zwift in 57 minutes 4 seconds. I can cycle further, higher and my segment times keep on improving. I can also keep pace and exceed many of the younger guys in the cycling clubs Im a member of. I have friends my age in the clubs who are also in excellent condition and still cycle at an impressive level
    I also wonder when the effects of old age will see my abilities plateau and then decline. It must happen at some point. I think regular exercise obviously pushes that decline back further. Staying fit and strong is now my long-term goal entering old age.
