You don’t hate running, you’re just out of shape. You hate feeling like shit, which you do when you run. Because you’re out of shape. You don’t know what you don’t know. I use to think the same, that I hated running, but it wasn’t that, now I can run 10ks casually and it’s no harder than walking.
And occasionally I’ll feel excellent. And overall I’m a lot fitter and have much better energy, sleep and whatever else. It pays dividends.

@@willepooh I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who can run and run for a long hard time who hates running. At WORST you’re just indifferent to it at that level, you find it boring or prefer other forms of cardio. When you become good at running it’s not painful or hard, like I said, walking. If you can run a 5 minute mile, or a 40k and say “I hate running” then I’ll give it to you.

Loved it! Huge kudos for the determination and finishing. Reminded me a lot of the one marathon I've ever run (London in 2016). I'd never run more than 7 miles before getting my place. My "training" consisted mostly of occasional 2 mile runs to and from work. Then I did something like 8 miles, 11 miles, 13 miles, 18 miles and 20 miles on consecutive Sundays. Then nothing for the whole month leading up to the event.
For the first 9 miles I was _flying_ (for me). Wheels started coming off after 12 miles, even more so after 16 miles; and at 20 miles I just wanted it to be over. Managed to rally towards the end and "sprint" for the line. When I crossed the line my body basically said "OK, nope" and I could barely move. Hardest physical thing I've ever done. I walked this last weekend. It’s my third since June. The Lake District and Yorkshire, being the other two. I found the Thames the easiest fitness wise. But the constant flat and repetitive stride, had a massive impact on my feet/heels, calves, hams, glutes and lower back.

What a great achievement. Thank you for taking us through the race like this, enduring the pain and suffering so that we don't have to, or at least think twice before singing up for an ultra. Especially the after-race-recovery bit made me laugh, sorry for that.

I have to say there is something odly relaxing in watching a nearly 50 year old bloke from england doing an ultra marathon and is equaly as tall then you and equaly as heavy as you (but is 15 years younger than me and has at least 15% lower body fat percentage), while you are doing your slow and steady cardio session on your indoor bike. Keep it up it's great motivational content and shows that you can still achieve amathing goals, even if you were unhealthy and fat in your 20s.

You should try adventure racing. It's a bit like a triathlon but you chart your own course with a map and a compass. Most usually involve a mix of mountain/gravel biking, orienteering, and kayaking/canoeing so you're not on your feet the whole time. Events can be anywhere from 3 hours to 10 days long.

What a great video! I've watched many ultra marathon videos from various people with various backgrounds and degrees of experience, but the style you adopted for yours is really something I haven't seen before. Big fan of the embedded reviews between the actual race segments. I also like that you pointed out the stuff that didn't go that well and that this wasn't just motivation porn. Great job with the run and great job with the transformation! I'll go check that out as well. All the best!

I love this Mark. So honest so real.
By REAL I mean we all set a goal and then do not train enough. Full of positivity we set off to the inevitable.
You meet yourself and make the best of it. It's not the unrealistic finish you imagined/hoped but you did not give up in the slightest and you finished!. Also, incredible how the 4K detour consumed you mentally. I listened to the Sam Harris 911 and feel asleep. You finished 104km!
It's only 4% of the race but those 4km consumed you for hours. I totally get it - I have been there. For many it would have been enough to throw in the towel but you did not! Huge respect Mark!
Question: if you were not documenting everything on RUclips and you did not have that accountability do you think you would have finished?

For these Ultras i'd recommend investing in a set of Arc'teryx cormac/motus baselayer.
Its magical. Warm in cold weather, faster wicking, wind resistant and regulates well in hot weather.
For shorts, Montanes range is brilliant.
Kit means alot in terms of comfort, keep them coming Mark. Videos inspire lots and are entertaining.

Well done mate, first time at these kind of distances is always a learning experience, I know how you feel about the speed, really hits you after a while when you go out too fast. I started about half an hour behind you on the day, I took the 2 day 50km each option. Getting up on the second day was a struggle! The heat hit me quite badly too, found I was running out of water quite quickly after each rest stop. A few people missed that turning over the bridge, I don’t think it’s an obvious turnoff but agree that the sign-posting was generally top notch on the day.

Just watched the video, absolutely brilliant. I ran an 8 hour event 2 weeks ago with very little training apart from the occasional run and cycle commute every day. I managed 55.54 km. I went through pretty m7ch every stage you did. Probably the worst was going off too quickly. I made a point of stopping every 2 hours and changing my socks, lubing my feet, and changing my top. Which felt like getting into clean bedding. Which helped psychologically.
