Got my first sub 30 5k on Sunday! I’ve signed up for a 10K at the end of October and a half marathon for next year! I’m not losing weight but I’m having fun!

I'm looking forward to seeing your race. It will be a SufferFest, but inspiring in its own way. I do have to give you some kudos, 2 solid things I learned from your videos and used in real life are: Stop and tie your shoes! and using gaiters for adventure runs and OCRs. I did the Mount Hood Scramble adventure race back in June, my first event since covid, and it has no trail, just markers, multiple water crossings, mud, snow, ice, rocks, steep ascents and descents, and those two pointers made the whole thing much more pleasant. I was ecstatic when I discovered your channel. I work 60-70 hours a week, and absolutely love ultras. I simply don't have time to train "properly", yet my life is so darn active with work that I have above average base fitness. Throw in a few months of light but specific training and I'm ready to tackle any challenge- slowly and conservatively, to finish, not compete... and I wouldn't have it any other way. I would have missed so many experiences, not just races, if I'd waited until the time was right, finances were right, fitness was right. Life is short, live it, even if that includes less than ideal preparation! Have a blast, make memories, and maybe size up your shoes to save your toenails! 😆 Looking forward to the gratuitous foot shot after!

I recently finished my first trail 100k with 5000 metres of vert, having gone no further than 38km in training (on the flat, I don’t own a mountain). I made the 19 hour cut-off with a quarter of an hour to spare, but at least taking it nice and easy meant it wasn’t a suffer-fest… Best of luck, Mark! Hope you enjoy most of your event.
Regarding walking breaks - I've been experimenting with 10 min run, 3 min walk for my weekend long trail runs. I find that I can run 3-4 hours with that method and not feel quite good the rest of the day - which helps with the training/home-life balance. Over a month of practicing it I run only slightly slower (15-20 second per mile) on average than when I was just "running" the whole 3-4 hours.

This is going to be ugly! It'll be fun to watch, though. It'd be painful even to walk 100K on that training base. As you suffer, think about how you need to go do a 3rd 100K to actually see what you can do when you train properly.
Love this channel. It has tons of banter with the odd bit of useful information thrown in! 😂. I am not a natural runner. I'd go so far as to say I really dislike it - the process, not the feeling it gives. Yet, and in keeping with your running approach, completed a 50k Ultra 3 years ago (for my 50th birthday) on no training. I properly hurt for a week. I have now signed up for the Dragon's Back Race 2023, as I like to challenge myself, though I think I'll do more than 5 days training for it! Looking forward to your 100k-take-two video 🙌🏼👊🏼💥
I think you did an incredible job of coloring and relating your experience and how to make subtle changes, which over the course of 100k are huge. I’m a large runner as well, and although I would never make that kind of distance, I face similar challenges. Having weak ankles is my biggest obstacle. I always thought that I would have less pain if I just ran barefoot, as my ankles are much less an issue when I’m not in the typical supinated position, which is basically how most running shoes are designed. I am definitely going to try a minimalist shoe the next time I have some extra cash. Thank you.

I’ve gone from 2.3 years in bed thanks to covid to 12 weeks of training for this race and a sore Achilles that after a few days of rest and ice is still sore after todays short 5km run. I thought I’d be smart and sign my daughter up to run with me, she’s one year away from becoming a Dr but after she ran her first marathon with 18 days of training she has decided to set her own pace and leave the old man to his own fate! It’s going to be an interesting day for all of us I think but great to be outside enjoying doing silly stuff and all thanks to the motivation you give to so many of us

It's content like this that has me doing my first half next month and pondering a 35 mile run September '23 (Gritstone Grind). The idea of being a new runner and being able to do these things is a great feeling. Hope you don't mind too much but I've fully appropriated your "above average" mantra!
Ive never run even close to 100k however Ive run many marathons and ive run 3 short ultras with 60k being my longest I spent 4 months getting ready for that with some really long weeks averaging around 150-160 k per week i used maffs training with some shorter speed work aswell as some hill repeats Some very fast ultra runners i know suggested i start really slow and hold that pace I did and it ended well The plan was just to beat the cutoff time which was 8 hours I actually went just over 7 hours I was really happy with that and recovered really well Love your channel and videos inspiring for us mere mortals Cheers Mark 😊👍🏃♂️
I loved doing run-walk-run's. I did it for years. That feeling of doing an easy 20+K day after day after day when on vacation was awesome :-) Wake up, run, lunch, enjoy the rest of my day. (Too bad my knees convinced me otherwise so now I ride a bike)
Wazzup, did you pinpoint why the knee issues developed? I’m wary of the infamous knee problems that can come with running, my dad had the same, so i’m doing everything i can to avoid it.. cushioned shoes are for sure helping me at the moment

I think injured them once pretty bad with a fall from height (bothered me initially for several weeks) and ever since It has very slowly (in like 30 years) been getting worse. It hindered me doing Aikido (suwari waza), inline skating and I "worked around" it when running.. adapted stye of running (trails, flatter shoes, midfoot strike, shorter stride, lot's of walking breaks) but always was suffering a bit especially the day(s) after. Eventually it got so bad I just didn't want to run anymore. Had to stop squats and deadlifts as well as they hurt me too much.... So I bought a bike. Now cycling up steep hills hurt, but luckily we don't have many of these over here. So (tldr) I don't think the running caused the problems. The problem just affected my running.
I'm currently in a similar position, but not quite as bad 😂, I have a 52km ultra on the 8th of October, but I've only just started to do long runs again. I've been so focused on 5km speed I hadn't realised how close it was... I did do my first sub 17:00 parkrun at the weekend though and hope to break 15mins for 5km canicross 🐕 this year. This years ultra will be mainly about fun, but I have set a target of 5:00/km, so may well suffer 🤣 I'm always impressed by your ability across such a range of activities, nice work and thanks for the videos 👍🏻
It's mad to me that you did 100km last year with little training! I did a 50-mile last weekend with little training and I DNF'd. I managed 43 before the medical team had to come and find me. Thank the lord for trackers. I'm still tired now and my feet are more blisters than actual feet.
To prevent going out too fast when I “ran” my first 100 miler a few months ago, I (1) adopted a 25min jog + 5 min walk strategy from the very start, and (2) decided I would never let my HR go above some really low number like 73% of max HR. These helped a lot, but I was still dying towards the end ;-) Also I will kind of be angry at you if you finish in 15 hours with that “training base”. But good luck anyway.
So I thought I was mad with one weeks notice running a 10km up a steep hill and along rolling hills as someone who only walked 8km steps for the past four years. Best of luck, and maybe next year I'll sign up to wish you luck in person!

That's plenty of time, you've got this! My longest training run for my 50ks and marathons was 12 miles! You're already ahead, and still have 2 months! Best of luck, and remember, it's better to arrive at the race undertrained than overtrained!
I'm a 38 dad bod male. Used to be a sporty kid and still classed myself as sporty. I wasn't and it finally hit me that i had been deluding myself for 20 years just becaise i played football once in a while. I woke up at 38 and decided I needed to get fit. Your videos were a motivation of mine. Started with park runs, moved on to longer runs, got a running coach to put a programme together for me. Just finished walking the 100k ultra on the south coast and moving onto half marathon runs and marathons. Absolutely buzzing from the ultra even though I walked. One day I'll run one. Question... what do you hang your medals on? Been wanting to know that for a while. I'm starting to get a few and want to use them as motivation for me to continue to be the new improved version of myself. A visual representation of that is no bad thing. Good luck next week as well. I'll probably do the Thames challenge next year. Less elevation than some others and ideal for me to slow run.
I run walk with my feet pointing out. My physio diagnosed me as having weak glute med’s and my inner thighs were dominant. He told me my glute med’s had switched off, so I now do exercises before a workout to fire them up. I walked the Thames path challenge last year and the constant flat and foot strike was relentless. I was hoping to do it again this year, but unfortunately I have had to cancel. I was looking at buying a pair of Saucony tempus for cushioning and stability and maybe the xodus ultra for the second half, if it was wet. I made the mistake with shoes in the past, by not sizing up, loosening the laces at the front and using a runner’s knot for heel lock.

I'm in a similar boat, got a marathon this Sunday and not been over 20k this year... also 100kg, got a reasonable amount of cross/tri training under me but expecting a world of pain. Goal is 5 hours, but not going to beat myself up if it slips away. Looking forward to seeing your follow up video.

I’m in a similar pickle. Running a 1/2 marathon (road race) on Saturday. I have the endurance, but not at the pace I want to be running. Should be fun! Hopefully, your 2nd 100k isn’t as daft as the first. Good news is you have more experience. Bad news, still going to hurt.
Absolutely the best of luck Mark. That's the lowest volume training block I've seen for a Half Marathon let alone a 100k, at least it's flat as a pancake and not in the mountains. I'm praying for your legs 🙏📿

About everything you tell about your minimalist-shoe running, transitioning (earlier videos), overpronating in cushioned shoes etc. etc., you seem to tell my story. So I am absolutely interested in your experience with your new shoes through and after this run.
My "running" pace is 6min/km when I run just 10km, just over 1 hour and this dude full of donuts is half walking half running at the same pace!! I'm out of shape..... Good luck at the race Mark!

100km run is crazy! This morning I completed 620km, but I walked it, and it took me 79 days lol. Good luck for breaking the 15 hour mark. FYI I have around 18 blisters on my feet right now

I am in a very similar place! Well, no, not quite. I have about 3 months to train for my second ever marathon. First was 4h30 after I crawled the last 5k. I wanna do this one much better but have hardly trained - I'm also doing Hyrox Birmingham, so mostly short intense stuff! Did my first okay-length run today, 8.4km in my lunch break at work, and felt heavy and slow and like it was "new". Should definitely get back up to comfortably running 25-30km. Not quite as bad as 5 days to prepare for 100km though 😂
Interesting to see you've also gone for the paradigms. I'm planning to swap into mine at the half way point. Starting in my trusty Olympus, then going full on support and compression at 50km.
For anyone watching this video thinking "Ah ya, this guy is going to grind out a 100K with little dedicated training I'm going to try it too" just stop...really just stop. This guy is a RUclips fitness guy and although he may not have put in many long runs this year, his body is very finely tuned and experienced in running long distances. If the average person went out and tried to grind through a 100K you will probably do serious damage (or die - no joke). An MMA coach said something that has always stuck with me. He said so many guys roll in and after a few training sessions want to sign up for a spot on the next fight card. The trainer then has to explain to that person (without hurting their ego) that if they get hit (really hit) it could end their life (for real). It takes years to teach your body how to take a proper punch or slam or whatever and this is no different. 100K is zero joke and I have personally ran past people who were undertrained and had to be carried off the course. Start with a 10K, then a half marathon, then a marathon, then a 50K and then a 100K. Don't let Marks awesome attitude towards it fool you:) That all said....you do you!

Eventually it got so bad I just didn't want to run anymore. Had to stop squats and deadlifts as well as they hurt me too much.... So I bought a bike. Now cycling up steep hills hurt, but luckily we don't have many of these over here.
So (tldr) I don't think the running caused the problems. The problem just affected my running.

I'm currently in a similar position, but not quite as bad 😂, I have a 52km ultra on the 8th of October, but I've only just started to do long runs again. I've been so focused on 5km speed I hadn't realised how close it was... I did do my first sub 17:00 parkrun at the weekend though and hope to break 15mins for 5km canicross 🐕 this year.
This years ultra will be mainly about fun, but I have set a target of 5:00/km, so may well suffer 🤣

It's mad to me that you did 100km last year with little training! I did a 50-mile last weekend with little training and I DNF'd. I managed 43 before the medical team had to come and find me. Thank the lord for trackers. I'm still tired now and my feet are more blisters than actual feet.
Under prepared is an understatement.
Pass or fail your goal this will screw with your remaining event goals.

To prevent going out too fast when I “ran” my first 100 miler a few months ago, I (1) adopted a 25min jog + 5 min walk strategy from the very start, and (2) decided I would never let my HR go above some really low number like 73% of max HR. These helped a lot, but I was still dying towards the end ;-)
Also I will kind of be angry at you if you finish in 15 hours with that “training base”. But good luck anyway.
I seen many start marathons and ultras by walking for the first half hour or hour….

That's plenty of time, you've got this! My longest training run for my 50ks and marathons was 12 miles! You're already ahead, and still have 2 months! Best of luck, and remember, it's better to arrive at the race undertrained than overtrained!

I'm a 38 dad bod male. Used to be a sporty kid and still classed myself as sporty. I wasn't and it finally hit me that i had been deluding myself for 20 years just becaise i played football once in a while.
I woke up at 38 and decided I needed to get fit. Your videos were a motivation of mine. Started with park runs, moved on to longer runs, got a running coach to put a programme together for me. Just finished walking the 100k ultra on the south coast and moving onto half marathon runs and marathons. Absolutely buzzing from the ultra even though I walked. One day I'll run one.
Question... what do you hang your medals on? Been wanting to know that for a while. I'm starting to get a few and want to use them as motivation for me to continue to be the new improved version of myself. A visual representation of that is no bad thing.
Good luck next week as well. I'll probably do the Thames challenge next year. Less elevation than some others and ideal for me to slow run.
I run walk with my feet pointing out. My physio diagnosed me as having weak glute med’s and my inner thighs were dominant. He told me my glute med’s had switched off, so I now do exercises before a workout to fire them up. I walked the Thames path challenge last year and the constant flat and foot strike was relentless. I was hoping to do it again this year, but unfortunately I have had to cancel. I was looking at buying a pair of Saucony tempus for cushioning and stability and maybe the xodus ultra for the second half, if it was wet. I made the mistake with shoes in the past, by not sizing up, loosening the laces at the front and using a runner’s knot for heel lock.
Good luck Mark, at least you know what you're in for this time! I'm in a similar boat, got a marathon this Sunday and not been over 20k this year... also 100kg, got a reasonable amount of cross/tri training under me but expecting a world of pain. Goal is 5 hours, but not going to beat myself up if it slips away. Looking forward to seeing your follow up video.

100km run is crazy! This morning I completed 620km, but I walked it, and it took me 79 days lol. Good luck for breaking the 15 hour mark. FYI I have around 18 blisters on my feet right now

I am in a very similar place! Well, no, not quite. I have about 3 months to train for my second ever marathon. First was 4h30 after I crawled the last 5k. I wanna do this one much better but have hardly trained - I'm also doing Hyrox Birmingham, so mostly short intense stuff! Did my first okay-length run today, 8.4km in my lunch break at work, and felt heavy and slow and like it was "new". Should definitely get back up to comfortably running 25-30km. Not quite as bad as 5 days to prepare for 100km though 😂

For anyone watching this video thinking "Ah ya, this guy is going to grind out a 100K with little dedicated training I'm going to try it too" just stop...really just stop. This guy is a RUclips fitness guy and although he may not have put in many long runs this year, his body is very finely tuned and experienced in running long distances. If the average person went out and tried to grind through a 100K you will probably do serious damage (or die - no joke). An MMA coach said something that has always stuck with me. He said so many guys roll in and after a few training sessions want to sign up for a spot on the next fight card. The trainer then has to explain to that person (without hurting their ego) that if they get hit (really hit) it could end their life (for real). It takes years to teach your body how to take a proper punch or slam or whatever and this is no different. 100K is zero joke and I have personally ran past people who were undertrained and had to be carried off the course. Start with a 10K, then a half marathon, then a marathon, then a 50K and then a 100K. Don't let Marks awesome attitude towards it fool you:) That all said....you do you!
