I Love how their microphones sway around in the chaos, smashing them in their faces, while they strangle their instruments like they're trying to kill a loved one with their bare hands, while screaming for a star to crash into the planet.
If someone asks what "post-metal" is, I just show them this clip. It is everything that subgenre should be. It has the punk attitude, the doom-inspired crashing and crushing heaviness, it has the post-rock light passages, it has the meditative but mildly disturbed atmosphere...all these bands, from Isis and early Intronaut to the more melodic stuff like Pelican, The Ocean, and Russian Circles, would not be here without Neurosis. And none of them have played it more intensely. While they go for the spacey vibes and mellow tones, Neurosis is an out-of-body experience of pain. A pain so exquisite, so mind-numbing, that it becomes transcendental. A pain that makes you touch God.
Scott: screams his lungs off and tries to break the amp with feedback Steve: almost snaps his neck headbanging Noah: literally beats the keys with his fists Dave: I EAT GLASS AND WILL MUTILATE YOU! Musically and visually one of the best bands I know! \M/
Music is the ultimate form communication and this song is the battle cry for a soul that is enduring some kind of pain. This music taps into the deepest darkest depths of ur body. It frees the mind and heals the soul
Strange to say, but i have to confirm that.. 16years ago when my best friend committed suicide, i was really down, and this album helped me a lot..(as i can see it now). I thought that, there is no other music wich is stronger, deeper, darker like the Through silver in blood..it balanced the pain inside me.
Still to this day I regard Through Silver in Blood as one of the most powerful metal albums recorded in history. This is pure, unleashed anger. Does it look like they are holding back at all on that stage? They turn into one powerful entity that is most certainly not human. Unreal.
Drummer Jason Roeder is terrific. Each member of this band is irreplaceable- but none of this would work without Roeder. His playing Is always singular and unique, never over the top, as much about restraint as it is complexity.
Yes, fucking love Jason and he's one of my absolutely faves. But very underrated imo. And I love that he's in Sleep now. Chris was an insane drummer but The Sciences with Jason is probably their best album ever and I love to watch the live shows too
Therapist: Dave Edwardson is real and he definitely will hurt you Me: Wait, that's not your line Dave Edwardson: THE WILL!!!! TO POWER!!! ASCENSION!!!! ASCENSION MANIFEST!!!
Years ago, I remember playing in my first band. After a night of partying, our drummer was up in the morning with coffee in hand, he played this OzzFest DVD and he woke me up to tell me, "hey, its your favorite band!" I never heard of Neurosis until I seen this song played on the DVD. I was completely blown away because it never dawned on me that you can make such heavy, sludgey, and atmospheric music all at the same time. This solidified my love for the post-metal movement!
this video was on the ozzfest vhs i bought at circuit city when i was in middle school. it had coal chamber, slayer, sepultura, ozzy etc . i would always ffwd neurosis cause i just couldnt handle it. it was too heavy for my little 7th grade mind. it made me feel weird lol. cut to 20 years later and its prob my fav performance ever
It’s funny you mention that, there were some neurosis albums I couldn’t get into when they first come out, revisit them a couple of years later, and it’s just fucking epic🥊💥
I met a few of these guys after they played on the second stage at Ozzfest 97. I was so surprised by how friendly they were, because they are absolutely fucking terrifying onstage.
The talent in this band just blows me away. 3 great singers. Steve has some absolutely incredible solo stuff, same with Scott plus all of his mastodon features, and then on top of that Jason is one of the biggest metal drumming legends ever.
Damn, nine years ago I saw this video for the first time and that was my introduction to Neurosis. I've since seen them live twice and will likely see them for a third time this year. What a great musical journey this performance started me on.
I don't think I'll ever understand how Neurosis made it into the bill for Ozzfest '98. Every other band their was either Ozzy, Slayer, or something that sounded like Coal Chamber or Sevendust. And here we are with *proper* metal, ripping everyone's faces off in the middle of the Summer at the Glenn Helen Pavilion (now the Honda Center at Glenn Helen) in San Bernadino. This, and Sepultura were the highlights of the entire tour.
As I recall Max Cavalera praising Neurosis - Afterseeing Neurosis play those tribal drums at the beginning of through silver in blood live he decided sepultura will play Kaiowas as part of their live set. Where as they never before.
The date I saw did not have Slayer or Sepultura (though Max was in Soulfly at this point, so their peak had past) - we had like, Marilyn Manson and Pantera. Other than that, really a shit show of bands like Powerman 5000 and Coal Chamber, etc. Neurosis really were a highlight - though Type O Negative were also a good live band per usual and reunited Black Sabbath were pretty unfuckwithable, even though it took hours of waiting through everything else to get to them.

@Eric Draven i agree with you in the sense that Neurosis is a really cryptic band that requires time, it's an acquired taste, but it sounded pedantic and snobby in the first comment, then again, i got triggered for nothing really. (sorry for bad english)
The Eye of Every Storm, I believe, is their best album. It seems to be the best mix of newer(calmer) Neurosis and older(dark and intense) albums. It is complete, with every track being absolutely perfect. Wait until you listen to I Can See You, Bridges, Burn, A Season In the Sky etc etc.
I love them. I really do. I even own the limited edition "strength and vision" boxed set with all of their records on both cds and vynils. And i bought a turntable JUST for that. It always amazes me how the drummer can raise all hell with just a 4-piece set. Sounds like the whole tribal polulation of Africa banging on skins.
It’s a damn crime that this and all their other videos aren’t collected on an OFFICIAL NEUROSIS CHANNEL! Likewise a shame that twenty years later you still can’t buy this great recording.
Haha, totally forgot about writing this comment. It was spectacular: they played basically their best songs, and their performance was spot-on. I've never seen such a perfect rendition in a live setting before. Really stole the show from GY!BE, and managed to terrify a few hipsters in the crowd. All was good.
Pimpy G. Dawg I am partial to a bit of post rock myself, and I am a GY!BE fan, but when it comes to the live forum, Neurosis are the better band, in my opinion. Sounds like you had a blast, mate.
Neurosis is the most incredible band. I saw them in '97 open for Pantera in Peoria,IL and still remember it like it was last week. They are the only band to this day to scare the shit out of me! Some bands might sound like them but Neurosis doesn't sound like anybody. Every album is great in its own way and I will always be listening.
I remember when I bought this vid on vhs in 96..became a huge fan of coal chamber, sepultura killed it as usual, earth crisis was cool..but then there this..dark and heavy as fuck, dead as a hammer..neurosis trumps all..epic..cheers
While their music alone is genius, the audio/visual combo is indescribable. I first saw them open for Pantera in 96? having previously only heard a few songs. I was about 16, and it was one of the most emotional things (musically) i had ever experienced. they simultaneously scared me to death, yet put me in a deep trance. amazingly, they still put out insanely good music every time.
Listening to ToG along with Grace is a trip. Do it, if you haven't already. There's a note in the Grace CD I think that says not to worry too much about perfectly syncing the two audio streams; my two audio players were marginally out and the effect is crazy. (Why is Nickelback in the related vids?!)
This is... well, what can I say? It's like God (as I'd imagine him/her/it) has turned into music - violent and angry, yet caring and vulnerable... simply beyond words!!! Definitely the most intriguing video and band I've ever seen.
I've watched this clip so many fuckin times over the past years, it's still stands as one of the best live clips of any band I've seen. I STILL get chills up my spine. Such a fuckin ferocious song. Heaviness at its most pure!!
Hah, I have this on VHS. This is how I got into Neurosis, as they were the only band that really stuck out. Everything else was either Ozzy, Slayer or nu-metal, with Neurosis slapped right in the middle of it.

True! I miss that singing on the new albums...

he looked at the sun, so, technically yes
Too fuckin right!
honestly his entire performance scares me and gives me goosebumps every time his comes up to the mic. Guy is living it the entire way 🔥
When Phil Anselmo calls Neurosis the scariest band in the world, you know he's right.
can you share the interview wher he said it?
@@MrSanitsuj it was on an old VHS I had from around 1997 when they toured with Pantera. Will be on here somewhere.
They toured together during the Through Silver in Blood for Neurosis and Great Southern Trendkill for Pantera around 96
Amen brother
They fucking are
I Love how their microphones sway around in the chaos, smashing them in their faces, while they strangle their instruments like they're trying to kill a loved one with their bare hands, while screaming for a star to crash into the planet.
Those are bass pedals, conventionally they are operated by feet, but fists are fine too.
this is one of the greatest videos to ever be conceived.
The only problem I have with this video is that I wasn't there when it was recorded.
This video was posted in February 2006. RUclips was created in 2005. Legend has it, it was created purely to share the awesomeness of this video.

Writhe on - saints
Steal from your actions
Step in right on it's

Star - reign down
On you
You all lower me
Christs shine blinds
Your world
Your belief is scars
The will to power
Ascension manifest

Is as that which is below
Thy will be done
Thy kingdom come
