This is one of my favorite live clips of a band ever. So intense and heavy. Stands right beside Neurosis "Locust Star" from Ozzfest 96 and Pantera "Domination" in Russia.
Pantera is my number one band. Dime and Phil may be the reason the Soviet union fell! Lol . But for some reason neurosis musta slipped through the cracks on me. But damn right I checked there ozzfest performance! Badass! And yes I agree mastodon during the remission , Leviathan, and blood mountain Days were heavy as fuck! Metal at it's finest!
Mastodon are absolute riff machine - it's baffling how many fantastic riffs they've written over the years. Their music might not be everyones cup of tea, but it's undeniable that they have written some of the most badass riffs in metal, not to mention the incredible musicianship of all the members.
These kinds of songs really show the life and power that Mastodon had rushing into the metal world, hell even Bill is giving it full force with those vocals! I just wish he'd push himself more vocally for new tracks, I wanna hear him lead one song.
FalafelWaffleGames Id love to hear that too! When they played this song last month when I saw them, his voice was even deeper and more gutteral. It gave me more goosebumps than at any other point during the whole show!
Bill just doesn’t like singing, it’s a bummer because he kicks ass but don’t think we will ever get Bill doing leads solely because he just doesn’t like singing much.
@@puppetmaster8551 i think i heard in an interview he said he’d rather do only singing or only guitar, trying to do both makes his guitar skills too choppy.
@@Dicegremlin55 he can definitely do both and so it well but he’d prefer not to. Sings and plays great on mother puncher/fire ants/blood and thunder, even does cleans live on the high road chorus. He’s definitely capable of still doing it really well but I’m sure it’s harder for him than normal especially because it’s probably something he rarely ever practices. Kind of similar scenario with solos as well, he’s an incredibly good guitarist and could easy write and play dope solos but he just prefers to keep jamming and playing riffs and instead let’s Brent handle almost all the solos.
Watching this brings me tears of joy. I was only 13y.o. in 2006 when they visited athens alongside Tool. I had no idea who Mastodon was...I year later they returned to support metallica and i remember i was just losing it for the 1 hour set, and there were people around me looking at me like i was mental! From then on they became my all time favourite next to Down!
No, the crowd doesn't suck. This was kind of my reaction when I first heard Mastodon. I just sort of froze--so blown away by the immensity of what I was hearing that I couldn't really move. They were opening for Metallica. I had heard of them, but not many of the other folks around me had. People weren't really headbanging or going nuts because we were all just taking it all in. But everyone afterward said a collective "holy fuck". I felt sorry for Metallica (as great a set as they ended up playing) having to take the stage afterward.
Mastodon is great examle of what like high culture metal would look like. It's like not so much about the immersion or the headbanging you get, but more about like the musical brillianc :D

This performance is great. Highly recommend their workhorse performance from the same dvd and also Roskilde 2011 and live in the kpit with Scott Kelly. Those are their best performances imo.
Drumming under appreciated here. I got this on DVD with a magazine when I was a fat long haired 14 yo drummer and I was blown away by how the toms bounced up and down as he filled, beating them And him on the ride cymbal fuck me I love him
this will always be the most "fuck yea" Mastodon song for me, of course they're prog deities but this heavy in your face shit from their proggy hands was my ticket in.
Shit is a masterpiece, still in their setlist today also which is great to see, just saw them on their most recent tour and this shit was glorious to hear.
One of the best live performances of a song by any band ever. I used to watch it many times on Workhorse chronicles DVD every fucking day when i was at school.
