Video has some serious "heart shaped box" and "black hole sun" vibes
I was thinking the exact same thing. Love it!
I was thinking that and “Until It Sleeps” also. So rad!
Same here. Looked down and seen your comment.
thank you I was thinking the same thing

Ok, so a confession. I’m a middle aged metal head that has somehow overlooked Mastodon’s music until recently. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve finally taken the time to listen and it’s freaking me out! 🤩EVERY SINGLE SONG I come across including this one is awesome and instantly addictive…just different levels of brilliance. There’s so much variation in their style and production over the years while still being obviously the same band. Can’t wait to keep digging this diamond mine!
That's great to hear. It took me a while to get into them as they're quite proggy in places and not a traditional metal band. ♥️
All of their albums really stand alone, if you want heavy Mastodon, you listen to the early stuff like Remission and Leviathan, if you want the trippy stuff you have CtS and Hunter, and the new stuff is a mix of it all tbh.
@@svfutbol20 thanks, yea that’s what I’m finding. Once More ‘Round the Sun doesn’t seem to be as well regarded by fans. I’ve only heard a few songs and seems to be a simpler rock sound but not necessarily bad.
@@VipersNest I like a good prog sound, have enjoyed Iron Maiden’s prog era over the past decade or so. Even though different from their classic 80s albums.
How dare you! Now go sit on the naughty step and think about the meaning of life for a while.
Seriously though; welcome to the fold. You have a lot of material and a lot of wonderful experiences ahead of you! I'm really quite jealous.
Brann Dailor's vocals really opened a new chapter for Mastodon!
hell yeah
The fact that he can sing so well whilst kicking ass on drums is so impressive. Love Mastodon!
Couldn't agree more- great voice!
And the fact that he can still play drums with the very same precision and skill whilst doing vocals is just insane.
Which is why I've closed the book on them.
I saw these guys at a dive basement venue in 2002 with around 250 people in attendance. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be listening to them for 20+ years.
Rocknroll lives thru them and you and me , screaming yeah!!!
Nuh uh
I saw them in 05 in a room full of 70 people and I saw them last week in front of a few thousand and they rocked just as hard. I've loved them since the blood and thunder video dropped
Yeah good old times, the sludge metal days!
This band amazes me. They had two amazing vocalists FOR YEARS and then suddenly the drummer starts singing and it just makes the art that much more EPIC and BEAUTIFUL.
my wife hates metal singers but was like "hey he has a good voice"
Bill has started singing live this tour as well!
@@benjammn2157 Bill has been doing back vocals occasionally, check some live videos for 'March of the Fire Ants'
The drummer has sung as far back as Crack the Skye. Maybe even earlier, but I know for sure Crack the Skye. "I tried to bore a hole into the ground..." that part on oblivion is Brann. Pretty sure every member of the band sings on almost every record.
He has the voice of an angel. Blew my mind seeing them live
I know that Brann has been singing on the albums for a while now but he's really come a long way and really brought a new life into to full vocal delivery of Mastodon.
I was going to post the sane thing!
@@todd-1 DO IT! DO IT!
Ok guys...here goes...I know that Brann has been singing on the albums for a while now but he's really come a long way and really brought a new life into to full vocal delivery of Mastodon.
Always loved Branns voice, very unique, almost haunting sound.
While still keeping the same insane level of skill and talent on drums
In a world of remixes and regurgitated melodies, these guys just keep on discovering these unique but unmistakably Mastodon riffs and harmonics. These guys never disappoint.
Their sngwriting is always above the norm and just so good. 🤘🏾
That's what happens when you're the best band in the world.
I thought the riff was reminiscent of one of Greg Puciatos songs, but the way it works through to the repeat changes. Still a legit and amazing riff!
Those snare hits are just amazing on the main part. So much impact
Check out new Porcupine Tree
This is such a quintessential Mastodon song. The blistering Kelliher riffing, the vocal dichotomy, the intelligent and poignant lyricism, the emotionally impactful breakdown, and Brent coming in at the end to set the whole thing on fire.
Fuck. Yes.
What about quintessence?
This song is perfect
Agree with all of that..except the intelligent lyricism. The words are a kind of meaningless afterthought as far as I can tell.
AGREE ! :)
Yes. This. The riffs, the chunky yet super groovy effects, the contrasting vocals, the bridge letting it breathe and blistering solo, and the psychedelic visuals. Gotta love it.
I always knew Dobby was alive and well. Had no idea he could sing like such an angel though
Lmfao, somebody obviously gave him a sock
Yeah i saved him!!! I tricked Harry by making him believe Dobby died and i couldn’t do anything to save him! I’m the best witch out here that could ever exist
He's been raging with Gandalf (Troy)
Mastodon is my favorite band! I can't say enough about them, and I'm a 59-yr old woman....lol. Always feel like an old fart at their shows, until they take the stage, then I don't give a rat's a**.
So awesome! Good for you and have fun out there.
54 years old man here. Saw them live about 3 years ago. Felt like somewhere between 17 and 36 during the show
👏👏👏
49 year old male. And so think they’re the best metal band going. They just keep getting better
My favorite band also!
Arguably one of their best songs ever. Just a perfect representation of everything that's great about them. Brann's amazing vocals, Troy's amazing vocals, Bill and Brent killing it with the riffs, and Brent's incredible solo at the end. I get chills at the end every single time I hear this song.
The ending chords and solo could go on for so much longer. That would be totally fine with me. I’m talking like 10 minutes longer
Absolutely! I almost start to cry it's just so damn good!
@@dereklinfitt8875: U beat-me-2-it. Precisely what I was thinking. A melody so strong, I could loop 3:35-6:45 for 30mins on the treadmill, E-Z.
I can't believe you left out the drummer /s
Making a statement like that will surely get you arguments. Sweeping claims of "best song ever" only identify you as a fan of THIS song. This is a comment a 12 year old would make. This is generic metal, done before, over hyped with a gaudy video that looks like it was copied poorly from a 30 year old Nirvana video (Heart Shaped Box). This isn't even the THOUSANDTH best song ever.
This album came out 1 year after my brother passed. Definitely got me through some dark times. He was the one that introduced me to the Mighty Mastodon with their album Leviathan. RIP Jake
Sorry to hear that. I wish it had come out sooner. My mam passed in 2018
May he rest in peace
Man, do these guys ever disappoint? No. No, they don't.
they did when I saw them live around a month at. It sucked
I was just going to say that I have yet to be disappointed by them!
They Mastodon't! best band nowadays.
@@Ljngstrm I really like them when I saw them about 4 years ago but the music they make now is really bad it fell off after once more round the sun kinda evens before that
@@Ljngstrm huh, I honestly find that a bit perplexing. I've lost count of exactly how many times I saw them, and I always found their performance to be consistently topnotch, and I'm kinda a snob about live music.

Liquid hot magma.
"Magma" sounds more correctly.
Bran’s voice in this is haunting in the best way sends chills
Yeah, I saw this live a few weeks ago. I’d say I was peaking on my hit of acid/little bit of mushrooms that I ate. When this song was playing. And it was very haunting like you said. Between the distortion they put on his voice, the lights/effects. They really captured the vibe of this video. Oh man, it was so awesome. I had never even really listened to Mastodon before either. Fan for life now haha.
yeah man in this one and eyes of serpents, gives me chills
Man. This song punched me in the mouth when they played it live a couple months ago. Hell. YES!
Exactly the same happened to me, live it was a mind explosion that made me travel far!
Me too. So awesome hearing it live. So beautiful.
Same here I see them in hellfest it was the best part of my fest
Yup, thats when I realized drummer.
Same, saw them once in Hollywood and again in Riverside. So incredibly heavy live
I love every song Brann does vocals on. And this one has what might be my favorite riff on the album.
I agree Brann is pretty awesome at vocals. But my man Bill does amazing vocals on the tracks!!!
@@adamvalerio1377 you mean live? Cuz Bill doesn't do studio stuff.
@@kidnamedalaska lol, I know buddy, it's just a running joke I have on Mastodon videos. I always make some comment about Bill's great singing, when he almost never sings, lol.
@@adamvalerio1377 some of his live growls are actually really good, like on March of The Fire Ants
The band letting/trying Brann to do vocals was one of the best decision they did on their career
This video is going to be incredibly nostalgic in years when we watch it again. Instant classic song & video.
true
Look. I'm an old man. I know Celtic Frost, Exodus, Anthrax. Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, PRONG, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, etc etc etc... these are all EXCELLENT BANDS. I am not a "Mastodon Fan" ... I just started hearing them...2020 or so, but I gotta tell you. I'm 53 yrs old and this is an instant classic. A masterpiece. It may be one of the top ten songs ever written. It IS IN MY EYES.
I was also thinking that this has a very classic quality! Not just having classic influences, but doing what they did in terms of creativity
I feel the same way..
Im 58 .just heard for first time.
one lovely song.
The video ....
I relate. I wouldn't say I'm old.. still under 40.. just! Grew up with Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Machinehead, CoC, Megadeath and Motorhead... Grew into At The Gates and the Haunted but not so much In Flames and Mastodon... Until now. And it's great because there's huge discographies to get through. The solo at the end here reminds me badly of Jerry Cantrell/early Alice in Chains too and always said they were heavy for a grunge band!
So true.

My favorite song on Hushed and Grim and definitely the best riff on it
Agreed! Up there at the top of best Mastodon songs ever.
That outro riff is monstrous! One of my all time favorites.
It's by far the best song on the album
Same here. Love this song!
Agreed.
The scene that follows after 4:37 shows the pinnacle that is this masterpiece of a music video. Her smile shows overwhelming pride and satisfaction after committing what is symbolized as a heinous, sinful act, yet ignorant of it's true depth, makes for a chilling scene. Further complemented by a melody that sounds like crippling despair, a resigned closure... Its beautiful.
Was still deep in the hell that was the woman I loved and lived with for seven years leaving me for the man she cheated with when I first heard this song and saw this video. The cold agony of hurt and despair and un releasable heart ache you feel while watching the only person that really matters to you commit to such acts of betrayal and enjoying how much its hurting you even though they wont fully admit it, the Pain of having to watch them become someone who is irreversibly transformed from who they were when they loved you and how much this new world they left you for is thrilling them. The "Say when and id come running back" line hits me so hard because even though in my situation I knew my woman had eaten the apple and become tainted by it, leaving no chance at ever rebuilding what we once had, I still, more than two years hence feel her absence and would have for a very very very long time, maybe even now in the right circumstance, gone running back myself. chick really fucked me up. fuck this is such a perfect sound for the emotional longing. mastodon forever.

This is such a badass tune.
That final shot of the devil embracing Eve just makes me think of how easily innocence is lost and how intoxicating being complicit in your own demise can be, especially with the line 'Say when, and I'll come running back.'
I'm not sure what the lyrics truly meant for the author, but they hit especially hard for me as an older man looking back on some really heavy regrets. Sometimes finding forgiveness from others is much easier than forgiving yourself...
@@kurtangusofficial Link? Or care to simply explain it? Thanks!
Felt that. I'm only 31 but I have alot of regrets.

After hearing people debate, which is better old or new mastodon. Mastodon is like peanut butter. Their old stuff like crunchy peanut butter, gritty, coarse, and hella chonky, whereas the new stuff is like silky smooth peanut butter.
