I'd say it is actually harder to write riffs that on their own could carry a whole song than 20 riffs that you just throw in peoples faces and call it "prog".
Even more valid today than when you wrote this a decade ago. Music doesn't need to be complicated or super innovative to be enjoyable. Sure, it's always good to have innovators in every genre, but it's not what most people find the catchiest.
