    Song: Purify
    Album: Through Silver in Blood (1996)
    Lyrics:
    Blazing eye sees all
    Nature of firey triumph
    Patterns unfold
    Whispers revealing
    Path of spiral reaps
    Fetal buried gold
    Humbled in the womb
    A centre opens
    To the unknown
    Can you feel your fate
    Can you see you're
    Biding time hide
    From your life
    Drowning in the birth
    Place of the sun
    Descending the path
    Of an ascending god
    Purify my hells to
    Climb the heavens
    Sacrifice the flesh
    Feeding solar visions
    Set your mind to soil
    Set your mind to soil
    In darkness
    Bringing light
    A knowing old
    A knowing wise
    Flames to blades
    On earth, stabbing
    Scorching sacred lust
    Fall back to stone
    Fall back on spear

The stuff I described (out of fistration that it's even an issue) is quite literally fine tuned and designed to go against our natural frequencies at a cellular level, while redundantly numbing the mind with banality and "art" created from a marketing standpoint. It hasn't always been like this, and perhaps it may see a shift in the future, but calling it as I see it now, the standard of what is most broadly broadcast is set pitifully low from where it could be. There are so many great albums, magnum opuses in metal, however I often find that, when I check out such an album, I'm a bit disappointed.
    Maybe I expect too much, but for me, a lot of the iconic albums of metal bands are just not as great as I expect them to be.
    Here it is not the case, it hits the nail right on the head.
    I never had a drug fueled trip, never took acid, or a mushroom, or anything like that, but listening to Neurosis still gives you that transcendent feeling, which is no small feat. I have not really heard any other band that managed to do that. Maybe some older Meshuggah, or Paradise Lost; but this is just a different kind of hit.

      sekhui I agree that they're pretty different from what they used to be. But that's the great thing about Neurosis, their evolution. Through Silver in Blood was also drastically different from say, Souls at Zero. I love every version and album of this band.

    • @sekhui
      @sekhui 9 лет назад +1

      DaemoniumCC I'm sorry that my previous comment seems so aggressive. Thank you for your calm reply. The fact is that this band hit me pretty hard during an emotionally difficult, teenage-angst phase of my life. 15 years ago or so when I walked into a record store and asked the proprietor, "Is there anything harder than Nine Inch Nails?" I was profoundly lucky to have this kind metalhead drop this album on me and to walk out a while later with the top of my head blown off. You know how Neurosis of this era, and Enemy of the Sun too, is just somehow way heavier than anything else. So the band, in that incarnation, just has a special place in my old bitter heart.
      I do apologize for being drunk and emotional, again. And I'm sorry for not replying earlier. Working my ass off is all I can do lately.
      P.S. Souls at Zero is a monster album too.

    • @DeadGlassEyes
      @DeadGlassEyes 9 лет назад +1

      sekhui No apology needed man. You bring up a good point, in that they are pretty far away from what they used to be. But I like that. That said, there's just nothing that can match old Neurosis. It's just special.. and still heavy and frightening as fuck.
      Take it easy dude.

    The song "Purify" by Neurosis depicts a journey of spiritual transformation and personal purification. The lyrics employ vivid imagery and metaphors to paint a picture of introspection, growth, and the quest for enlightenment.
    The opening lines ("Blazing eye sees all / Nature of fiery truth") suggest the presence of an all-seeing and all-knowing force, possibly representing a higher power or inner consciousness. The "Patterns unfold / Whispers revealing" symbolize the unveiling of hidden truths or insights that guide the protagonist along their path.
    The lyrics "Path of spiral reaps / Fetal buried gold" imply the discovery and exploration of deep-seated potential within oneself. This journey is characterized by humility and a recognition of one's origins, as indicated by the line "Humbled in the womb / A center opens / To the unknown."
    The line "Set your mind to soil" implies grounding oneself and connecting with the earth, perhaps suggesting the importance of finding balance and stability during this transformative process.
    The closing lines ("Flames to blades / On earth, stabbing / Scorching sacred lust / Fall back to stone / Fall back on spear") depict a confrontation with primal instincts and desires. This could represent a necessary reckoning with one's shadow self or deeply ingrained patterns that hinder spiritual progress.
    Overall, "Purify" explores the themes of inner transformation, spiritual awakening, and the pursuit of enlightenment. It portrays a journey that requires humility, sacrifice, and self-reflection while acknowledging the struggle to overcome personal obstacles and find alignment with higher truths.

      It really isn't dude. And Neurosis is easily the most overrated band of all time.

    • @mousiedung
      @mousiedung 8 лет назад +37

      It isn't "heavy" in the sense that shitty deathcore is "heavy", though there's a solid core of ultra slow doom metal to it. It's more "heavy" in the sense that Pink Floyd and Godspeed You! Black Emperor can be heavy...it feels like a journey into some pretty heavy emotions.

    • @NathanielByers
      @NathanielByers 8 лет назад +8

      mousiedung Deathcore is awful dude, and I can see that Neurosis has a lot of weight to their sound. It's sludgy, raw and heavy like that of a juggernaut. I understand that they're progressive, and I see what they're trying to do with their music. I just don't personally dig it, nor do I understand why so many people herald them to be the gods of their respective genre. Some truly heavy bands in my book as far as brutality is concerned would be; Cryptopsy, Decapitated, Gorguts, Dying Fetus, Pig Destroyer, Necrophagist, Psycroptic, etc. Neurosis doesn't share in that "brutal" sense of heaviness... but there is definitely a sense of weight and substance to their sound.

    • @mousiedung
      @mousiedung 8 лет назад +11

      +Nathaniel Byers yup, they're not heavy in the sense that those (great) bands are, either. Like I said, if you have some degree of appreciation for the bands I mentioned before or for heavy, slow, Sabbathy stuff, I'd urge you to give Neurosis another chance. It doesnt help that their music is way "uglier" than a lot of the post-metal bands that were inspired by them, they just combine a whole host of elements, from electronic noise to spoken word to acoustic instruments like brass and strings to sludgy riffs to tribal drums to get you like thinking (about the end of the world) and feeling (mostly DOWN) and shit...kinda like the aforementioned Pink Floyd. Not much moshing going on in Neurosis concerts, at least now, plenty people tripping balls while being steamrolled by what sounds like a huge, slow bulldozer. With strings.

    • @mousiedung
      @mousiedung 8 лет назад +8

      +Nathaniel Byers I've gotta admit that like you at one point I wasnt into them, I actually got into them through their first album (I really like hardcore punk though). It's just one of those bands that will either click for you or it won't. They're very respected because they came up with a very creative approach that fused diverse influences and predated a lot of other bands' styles, from crust punk to indie post-rock. Say what you will about their music but no one was playing this kind of shit back in the early to mid 90s, not even Swans.
