    Just recently did my Rescue diver course here in Sweden. it's cold here, so we use dry suits most of the time, and our waters have poor visibility (or our definition of good visibility is your definition of poor visibility) :D
    the great things i took from that course is to be aware of the signals of the dive team to prevent problems before they happen (and the knowledge of what could happen), and the technique on how to bring an passed out diver to the surface correctly.
    my victim throughout the exercises was a hero as well, a seasoned Divemaster. he made each step a big challenge and fought hard. gave me a good show.
    i think that is the lack in many courses when we are supposed to act panicked. we don't do the effort to give each other a hard time (maybe because we don't want to be the reason to fail). but we should as it makes us all better divers.

    Well I’ll tell you one thing.. once you’re done with OW, there’s not really any emphasis on furthering support skills. They’re just kinda “off you go”. Give them an objective to work on that will develop those skills like maybe work on breathing to stay within 6ft +\-

    We did my rescue course in northern Illinois 50 degree water and flurries my instructor was a ft taller and had at least 50 lbs on me. I am 5’9 300 lbs. it was the most intense dive course I had. I am gonna take it again in a couple of years to refresh

    A navy diver in Sydney Harbour got their leg taken off by a bull shark. I doubt they provoked it.
    Obviously it's pretty rare.

    Geez I had my fingers broke from the instructor from the panicked diver simulation. I appreciated the realism. This course, the way it is being taught, will not prepare them for a real panicked diver or swimmer. Nope, never been bitten by a shark 50 years diving. Pretty sure if a shark bites you you need a tourniquet. Fire coral once but didn't need a rescue. The rescue course was the most difficult I've ever taken. Unless you can say that, you're probably not prepared.

    Not me, but my buddy got nibbled on by a bull shark in murky water. Nothing major from the shark's perspective, just a test bite and it immediately spit my buddy out. They still had to re-attach his calf in a rather lengthy surgery.

      Bull Sharks are so crazy. Im glad he's ok, but I'm sure the surgery and recovery sucked. Reading your comment reminds me of a video where a oceanic white tip (another crazy ass shark) tastes a diver in the exact same spot. I might eat my words on that one! Lol

    I have both done this and been the DM "victim" here in Monterey. Being the victim is a blast because you get to be the worst diver ever :D The only downside is you can't really do this in a dry suit so extended periods in the cold water of Monterey Bay in a 7 mm semi-dry gets pretty old pretty fast....

    • @tobiashartung856
      @tobiashartung856 Год назад

      What do you mean you can't do it in a dry suit? We do our open water diver training pretty much exclusively in dry suits.

    • @mikesbigadventures194

      @@tobiashartung856 Have you done Rescue in a dry suit? Having someone remove your gear or do the compressions with your inflation valve. Not to mention most Dry suit divers here also use BPW, so the removal of the BC and stuff is that much more difficult (in a real rescue you just cut the webbing) I mean you COULD do it but that would be super uncomfortable and might damage the dry suit. Open Water classes would be fine...

    • @tobiashartung856

      @@mikesbigadventures194 yes, I have and that is what I teach. We do dry suit pool practice before students even see a lake, let alone the ocean. They are fully dry suit trained by the time they start doing their actual open water dives for their open water qualification. Since I teach for BSAC, our open water students do rescue skills in a dry suit on a victim that is in a dry suit. When they go on to sports diver (the rescue diver equivalent), they continue doing rescue training in more advanced circumstances all in a dry suit. We do our dive leader training (DM equivalent) in dry suits and all the rescue in there is in dry suits with dry suit diving casualties. When you do your instructor ticket you are in a dry suit and you will do all the rescues in a dry suit with dry suit wearing casualties. Literally, the only students I have taught in lakes or the ocean who were not wearing a dry suit, were cross over divers who had not yet completed their dry suit training.

    IF there is a shark bite risk, does PADI teach underwater tourniquet application?

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  Год назад +1

      The EFR course recently added tourniquet use. Underwater application is not taught though. Personally I think I would opt for chainmail or perhaps "scuba abstinence" lol.

    Well, I've used my PADI Rescue Diver training twice. Both time in Monterey, where I'd taken the course. Best course I've ever taken.
    I"d hoped that I'd have a small fellow student. But NO! I was the only student and my instructor is 6"3" and 325+ pounds of muscle. Oy vey!
    This looks like a pretty lame rescue course. Where's the maniacal actively panicing diver? Who just waves their arms, looking like they're bored?
    And, THEY'RE ON THEIR KNEES!
