  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2012 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X is one of a handful of cars sold in the word that is really Moab, Utah off-road worthy. The old-school body on frame SUV excels at taking on the road less traveled with skid plates, bigger off-road tires and even extra lights mounted above the driver. In this video nathan takes the Xterra to Moab, Utah to see if it can keep up with the Jeeps in the sand, on the slippery rocks and in the red Moab clay and mud.

    As the owner of an Off Road (now the Pro-4X) XTerra, how about showing what it can really do? Driving around in circles on flat dirt is something I've done in cheap CUVs and even a Civic.

    I own this vehicle. The ride is great with very good on road manners, and awesome off road capabilities. As for the pro 4X features, it does have hill decent/ascent, rear locking diff and the larger more common 265/75/16 tire size. It also features the upgraded Rockford Fosgate stereo with I think 380 watts, and if you get the automatic you can get the XM radio. I'm not sure why shifting gears would cause you to not be able to listen to XM radio. Overall I really like this SUV.

    For those of you comparing the Xterra to other vehicles, it's not the vehicle so much as it is the driver. Test drive them until you find the vehicle that fits you, the Xterra will fit a lot of drivers as long as you can deal with owning an IFS vehicle that drives great on road and off road. If you want solid axle, Jeep or older Toyota, or you can solid axle swap the Xterra and slap 35" tires on it.

    Hey TFL, just a thought. The Toyota 4Runner and Taco TRDpro are $55,000CAD, and the Wrangler Rubicon is $50,000+ give or take. I bought my Pro4X Xterra for $40,000 new, loaded. Maybe a comparo between new vs used? I would love to see one of these go up Cliffhanger, compared to the Wrangler or a TRD Pro 4Runner??

    Big mistake by nissan ditching the xterra. Good looking tough off roader. At minimum they should have put a more fuel efficient engine in it.

    Those of you comparing ANY Jeep to a Toyota or a Nissan, Yes, we know Jeeps are God's gift to mankind. I admit they are capable off road, but I would always pick a Nissan or a Toyota simply for reliability's sake. Jeep is not known and has never been known for reliability. An Xterra with an OME lift and good tires would eat a Jeep and look better and last longer.

    Love this car. I have an '05 off road which is basically the pro-4x. It'll climb about anything it'll clear. Only complaint I have is that I wish they could use a higher top end gear to drop the rpms and up the mpg... It'll do 2,100 rpm at highway speeds!

  • @FatsharkFun

    I have done this in the same model xterra. Nothing compares to it. It drives thru all of the loose sand with ease. If you decide to try this you will absolutely need a new airfilter.

  • @squidog94

    A 4wd dosent actually drive all four wheels. The locking diff means that both the rear wheels are drive wheels when its locked. For instance you are stuck in a rut on a hill and your rear drive wheel is spinning in the rut. You lock the diff and the wheel that is not in the rut will also be engaged and help your front drive wheel get your other wheel out of the rut.

  • @XoskelOffroad
    @XoskelOffroad 11 лет назад +1

    If tires were the only factor then no it would not be worth it, but the locker, suspension and skid plates do add value for a solid rig right off the lot. Also you get matching gears in the rear diff that will allow you to do a front diff swap from a Titan. For me to do so I would have to replace the gears or entire rear axle in my S model. If you can get a Pro4X for a reasonable amount over an S or X model then I would do so.

    Man, I'm envious of the newer Xterra's horsepower. My 2002 4x4 Xterra gets right around the same gas mileage as the new ones, but only has 185 hp... Oh well, I'm still gonna drive mine until it falls apart, which hopefully is not for another couple hundred thousand miles!

    Do the Titan Suspension Swap and you can get lift and a better ride all in one mildly
    expensive project, and a stronger front diff up front if you swap that into the vehicle with it. You probably already knew that.

    You do not want to put the Pro4X tires on, you want to put the same size on which are what I am running but not the same BFG Rugged Trails that come with the Xterra. You will want to get something like BFG A/T KO, Goodyear Duratrac, or any decent well regarded tire suited for your environment and style of wheeling. I myself am running Firestone Destination M/T the same size as the Pro4X which is 265 75 16. A lot of people bump up to 285 75 16 which is almost 33"

  • @XoskelOffroad
    @XoskelOffroad 11 лет назад +1

    By "e-locker" I am referring to how it is engaged, it is a rear diff-lock. The best way to answer your questions is to go to thenewx dot org and search that forum which tells you how large a tire will fit before a lift or fender trimming is needed, what lifts are available and everthing else you could want to know. Do a video search for goneMOAB to see a lot of built up Xterras on Moab trails a lot more challenging then shown in this video. My own 2005 S model can be seen on my channel.

    It certainly is: but it’s not up to the level of the FJ in the dirt. That’s why I used the FJ as a comparison. The 4Runner is longer, heavier and it has a very touchy traction-control system. We nearly rolled a 2011 model at an off road event. Thanks for watching!

    @XoskelOffroad 11 лет назад +1

    Better shocks, bigger tires, rear e-locker. Some other options on the interior and the lights on the roof. There are other differences as well but I have listed the important ones.

  • @jgizzy
    @jgizzy 11 лет назад +1

    Good video style and great personality -- but it needs MORE technical coverage. You said it had 'doo dads' as a part of the Pro 4X options package, I want to know what they are and others do as well. What about the suspension was upgraded? How does it ride? Does the center diff lock, what type is it? How is low-speed throttle behavior in situations like rock crawling. Does it have hill descent control? Ect... technical as well as more comparative examples between trucks would improve your show.

    False, Pro4X tires will fit all Xterras. Except SE models. Those have been discontinued. Pro4X tires are bigger and will fit the other models, but even larger tires will fit them all. The biggest tire to fit wihout a lift is 285 75 16

    You need rock sliders, I build them if you ever decide you want a set. They will protect your truck from boulders and act as a step up to your roof rack. Rock sliders are probably the one add on that kept my own Xterra from having thousands in damage. Those OEM steps should be taken off before hitting the trail, so should the mud flaps. Its either remove them before or the trail will remove them for you.

  • @7150285

    higher ground clearance and better approach angle as well? Can switch to bigger tires on the regular 4x4 Xterra without getting it lifted?
    And you mean rear diff-lock not e-lock right

  • @XoskelOffroad
    @XoskelOffroad 11 лет назад

    True, if you go up to that largest size that can be mounted without a lift, you just need a heat gun and something to push the plastic back a little to stop the rubbing. Pro4X is the best way to go if you are buying new, used I would go for a Pro4X or what the Pro4X used to be called, the Offroad model. If you can find a really good deal on a S or other model then you can still upgrade just as you can a ProfX/Offroad model, but one of those upgrades will be a locker just to catch up,

When i bought it i purchased a full bumper to bumper 8 year nissan warranty. Never had to use it. I'll never sell it unless i wreck beyond repair. Pro X is the silliest name I have ever heard and glad they started that in 2011 instead of 2010.

    Mine is a 2008 Xterra and my only worry is when I shift gear from Park to drive and press gas pedal it kinda jerk. Not moving smooth. I don't know may be its the nature of Xterra??

  • @XoskelOffroad
    @XoskelOffroad 11 лет назад

    That is not what I am saying, I am saying the tires that come with a brand new off the lot Xterra be it Pro4X, S or X model, are crap. They are cheap tires that are ok if you never leave the road but can be a liability if you hit the trail.
    The size of a Pro4X tire is 265 75 16, the size of a S or X is 265 70 16. The largest size you can put on an Xterra of any model without getting a lift is 285 75 16, with a melt mod for the inner plastic fender due to some rubbing up front.

    There'll be a new Frontier in 2 years, built on a global platform. Asia/Africa has always gotten a better pickup than the US, but the next will be global. With the Pathfinder going all body-on-frame on us, the Xterra is the only true SUV left (after the pointless Armada is killed anyway).
