  • Jeep Wranglers and Toyota 4Runners are hugely popular out here in Colorado - and that makes even well-used examples an expensive proposition. But what about something the Nissan Xterra, that's been out of production for a few years? It may take some patience, as Angel found when he landed on this one-owner example from 2007, but it's definitely worth it when you consider the bottom line.

      Hopefully that means that Nissan will bring them back into production. I've loved 2 of them and recently traded my 2012 in for a Frontier because there was no Xterra to replace mine. I'm hoping with the increased popularity of the SUVs like the new Bronco, 4Runner and such that Nissan will see that this is a prime time to bring this back.

I preemptively changed the rad out, did the rear transmission vent line hack, and it still runs great with no timing chain issues thus far. Only thing is that the terrible salt in Ontario has given it some bad underbody rust. If/when it eventually dies, I'll be looking for a 2014/2015 Pro X as a replacement. I love how nimble it is, and the engine has good low end gusto. I don't need electronic frills of any kind to drive.

  • @Fix_It_Again_Tony
    @Fix_It_Again_Tony 3 года назад +4

    The seat wear must be common. My Frontier has similar damage. Still, that is an amazing buy for the price, especially an off road version with a factory rear locker.
    Only real issue to watch with an Xterra or Frontier was prior to 2011 there was a problem with the radiator that would let the coolant and transmission fluid mix (SMOD). This only affects the automatics, though. Bypassing the transmission heat exchanger in the radiator is the simple fix, or replace the radiator with the newer part to fix the problem (Nissan part 21460-9CA0E). They still have an oil to air cooler for the automatic transmission in front of the air conditioning condenser behind the grill. The 5 speed automatic is built well, it's the same transmission behind the 5.6 L V8 in the Armada, Pathfinder and Titan, but water in any transmission will destroy it. Of course this Xterra is not affected because it is a 6 speed.
    The 4.0L engine is the biggest of the Nissan VQ series, which has accumulated 15 Ward's 10 best engines awards over the years. I think the engine is the highlight of these vehicles. It's not the most efficient, but it makes great torque - perfect for a truck. I have stock 3.36 gears in my Frontier and with 33 inch offroad tires I never feel like it is under powered. It's not my daily driver so the fuel efficiency doesn't bother me. It gets 18 MPG on the highway with 33" tires, a lift and the front air dam removed - none of which help MPG.
    I hope Nissan takes the new Frontier and builds a new Xterra with that platform.

  • @TheYankeeh8r
    @TheYankeeh8r 3 месяца назад

    I came to my XTerra the same way. I was looking at 4Runners, but the price was more than I wanted to spend for those miles. Found my 2015 Pro 4X with 86k miles and I love this SUV. It is definitely a slept on SUV. The only downside is the aftermarket support. While you can find almost everything you need as far as upgrades, there are fewer companies that make them compared to Jeeps and Tacomas/4Runners so they tend to be expensive. The biggest issue to watch for in pre-2011s is with SMOD issues where the faulty radiator leaked into the automatic transmission creating the 'strawberry milkshake of death' and eventually grenading the transmission.

    What a badass Xterra! I just bought mine in 9/20. I live in Colorado also.
    I got a 6 speed manual in mine as well. Couldn't drive anything else. Exact same color. It's called Silver Lightning. I'm lovin' it so far.
    I wanna turn her into one just like this. This video is very inspiring.
    Also, my driver side seat has the exact same tear on the exact same spot. Lolol!

It has 227,000 miles and so far I've only had to do a valve job, head gaskets, timing belt, water pump, rear springs, shocks, tires, Injectors twice (Thanks Ebay), MAF sensor, front and rear brakes, Heater fan resistor, Radiator, Transmission rebuild ( Thanks to Trans cooler being in the radiator and cracking filling trans with coolant), Battery, alternator, (1) exhaust manifold, complete exhaust including convertors from manifolds to rear bumper, O2 sensors.... all true stuff, my wife asks why I throw money at a piece of crap and I show her the title....... SOOO all in all not a bad winter beater over 4000 dollars later. She's a gem... LOL FYI. I do my own work otherwise i would have burned her to the ground long ago if i had to pay a shop LOL I'm joking I love it and can't part with it.

For the worn seat, here's my tio, keep the damn side steps on, step on it when you enter or exit, grab hold of the handle bar on the A pillar and lift your butt into the seat, no problem. Didn't have a worn seat when I did that.

    These cars are amazing really, myself drive a 2010 pathfinder, used to own 06 pathfinder too, I think this VQ40DE is the more powerful v6 than any other rivals, (correct me if Im wrong), and the only concerns are: 1. recovery hooks have only 2 bolts on the frame, have seen several of them got pulled out during recovery. 2. need additional skid plate in the front to protect radiator.
    there is a trick to show all the stats of the car during offroading which is really useful, I keep the coolant temp. on display during sand offroad at all time. PS: I live in UAE, current desert temp is 47C in the mid day and afternoon.

    That Xterra is tops, but did I miss something,, where's the trailer hitch receiver? He's done nice mods to his Xterra and I think he's in for some nice off-roading soon.
    When I bought my Frontier in 2010, my wife wanted an Xterra but found that it was a tad too tall for entry and exit so she decided that she wanted a lower vehicle.
    So we looked at the 'little brother' of this Xterra, the XTrail. She absolutely loved that one.
    We started to do more road trips, and soon found that the 4 litre V6 with automatic trans. of the Frontier was just too thirsty. This is why I've been waiting all these long years for something
    new from Frontier, and now its on the way. We will see!
