- On this weekend adventure, my son and I set off deep into Joshua Tree to Explore the Thermal Canyon, Pinkham Canyon, Old Dale Road, Brooklyn Mine and Eagle Mountain Trails in the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler 4xe and one of them had some challenges on the trail. We also explored some old abandoned mines and searched for an epic desert camping spot.

You’re very lucky to be able to spend that time with your son. I miss my dad and wish we could do thing like that together. Enjoy!
Thank you! I'm thankful he still enjoys hanging out with his old man!
Agreed, i never wheeled with my dad outside of a buggy excursion, but after he died, the only time i felt his presence again was when i went wheeling in moab(my first time driving a 4x4 vehicle) that alone convinced me to get a wrangler over a truck
@@Cptkirk1315 I saw your post. Sorry for your loss. We never know how much time we have and time is precious, the only thing which we can never get back, no matter what. We have to thank God for every day we have on earth with our families. I am planning on taking my dad wheeling this year as I realized too late how short life is and I can’t take my mom. Just lost my mom on 3/4/22, but I know that she’s always with us in spirit.
@@TrailRecon why,,why,,ohh,,why,,did you buy a hybrid.. jeeps are bad enough, without 2000 more lectronic doodads to worry about..being green,is negative. it doesnt work or cost less.. your a nice man, x army,??.. look up lithium & cobolt mining..congo.. ill keep my gas & diesel s/duty. 4x4rs.. real trucks with diffs..
Beautiful scenery and what a great story for your son in the years to come! I have two boys, one hates off roading and the other will only do it if he can drive! lol. We go out though on the local trails here in Nova Scotia. Great video, you seem like a very calm and collected guy on the trails, that's always great too!
Confirms my worries of getting a 4xe, skipped it and went back to a 3.6. Loved my 3.0 diesel, superb powertrain in my JT and excellent mpg. I won’t lie and say just about every bitter cold morning it made me nervous. In the process of getting a 3.6 xtreme recon rubicon. Back to basics so to speak.
My last two V6 JLs. One had a valve cover gasket leak at 2k miles and one got a hole in the valve cover at 10k Miles’s I’m done with that motor haha I went with the 4xe. Have 6k miles and it’s a fricken beast
There is something to be said about the reliability of internal combustion!
@@Blake_Jordan The 3.6 usually lasts 300k miles. Its not powerful, but now has the E-torque assist is nice and reliable. You are on your third JL ? Must be nice! lol.
@@brooktech7869 I honestly get a new jeep once a year haha! Had a 18 sport s then a gladiator Mojave and now the 4xe! They all have their pros and cons. But the 4xe is fun and useful as heck if and when you learn how to mess with it properly. There’s a lot of tips and trick’s with it
The Wrangler Christmas Tree dash stays on year round.
I love listening to the desert guys discovering R-value of sleeping pads... much love from Wisconsin!
Who makes your coffee packaging?
If you could talk to Chrysler what you tell them about the 4XE or just wranglers in general? Like improvements you’d like to see?
Upgrade the awful seats, get rid of aluminum knuckles and problematic aux battery design!
Ill bet BOTH Of those polished turds had problems LOL
I’m surprised y’all don’t have a trashroo
I do...just didn't bring it this trip.
Great video, very fun road trip, love it! Which one.....? (still shopping for my off road vehicle), I think I am liking the power of the Wrangler 4xe.
Brad - I like when you provide coordinates to the trails you take. Keep doing that. Great video as always.
Yes! Super informative and helpful ..please continue with the coordinates.
I have a secret spot I like. It is a Jeep road. I would never post the coordinates unless it was a good friend as when I go there I want it to be empty unless I invite someone.
"Leave it better than you found it." Well said, Brad! Thanks for being an example for others.
I agree totally! Always makes me happy to see off-road channels promoting stewardship, and practicing what you preach. 👌🏼
You look genuinely upset about the Jeep issues. Just keep in mind we all get valuable information from your hard work, so chalk this experience up to science.
yes,,i agree,,dont buy a jeep..
Brad, I have been a Ford technician for almost 40 years, Todays technology is good and bad for these type of vehicles. Something to add, Get the Ford Pass APP, and get it registered, When you get DTC's it will tell you in the APP. The dealer can see this also and when the event occurred also.
One tip for you: Most sleeping bags will have at least a water resistant outer fabric or coating. When stuffing the bag turn it inside out and you will find the trapped air will escape easier.
Take a sleeping bag liner along, they make a huge difference.
@joed596 if the weather is good turn it inside out as soon as you get up and throw it over your tent or something to let it dry out before stuffing it.
My favorite part of the video was seeing you clean up your trash. Tremendous amount of respect for such a small act.
Had a diesel. Switched to 4xe and im back to the diesel. Ive been through the same area and got almost 17 mpg on 37s in the diesel.
Strongly prefer everything about it
i have a s/duty, 2002,, with a german/ brazilian, 4.2tdi.. weighs 4t unloaded. gets 12.5 lt 100 ks.. only problem with diesel, is the maintenace, every 5k. 2 -3 times of gas engine. my bronco costs about $40 to service, every 10 - 50 yrs.. it dont care,, its gas,,, diesel, every 5k - 10k depends on oil quality.. $140..plus ,our gas/petrol, is now 1.50, where the diesel is still 2.00 lt...not gallon..
@@harrywalker968 What every 10-50 yrs? .... you lost me
Great video. I have the Sahara 4xe. I hope mine doesn't develop any problems since it is the first year run of this model. One thing he doesn't mention is the power of the drivetrain. Only the 392 can out accelerate any other Wrangler. I didn't buy mine for the off road capabilities, that's what my other Jeep is for, I bought this because it is an excellent balance of fun, performance and fuel economy. With a "depleted" battery, mine still gets 20mpg on the highway at 75-80 mph. With a charged battery, it will get 30mpg and with that on a long trip, it will only last about an hour. Much better than my 3.6 Gladiator Rubicon on 35's.
That white Jeep Wrangler is beautiful.
";-)
Nothing like spending time with your family out in nature and enjoy the great outdoors. Nicely done Brad!
100% Thank you!
Tip on the Gazelle. If you want to install the rain fly, add it first before you pop up the roof. Makes it much easier.
We have two Gazelle T4s and love them.
And make sure it’s oriented properly. It‘s not actually square, which occurred to me the morning after a nighttime downpour near Arches last year where the fly touched the tent walls and water began seeping in.
“Why is this so hard to put on?!“ I said that previous night. My future voice said, “why didn’t you at least glance at the instructions, you dork?”
Everyone complaining about electrical errors on the 4xe, the easiest and simplest fix is to ensure every single fuse in the fuse box is tightly and securely pushed in. Many come from the factory with loose fuses and mine did as well. Although this should be resolved by Jeep, it's an easy fix and will save you a ton of time and headaches. Mine is solid and has never given me any problems because I made a point to check the fuse box and push all the fuses in properly when taking delivery.
Time to trade that 4Xe in for a 396 Wrangler. You've been having way too many problems with that Jeep.
I’ve had that “service 4x4” error message several times, the best I can tell is it’s a heat issue with the transfer case. Mine always goes away after turning it off and waiting a bit, it’s definitely been an inconvenience for sure. Happy trails!
Heat build up under vehicles in those conditions can be pretty high. Batteries don't like heat so I wonder how jeep cools thiers.
Old Jeeps never die but modern technology can make you cry
I love the simplicity of my 74 for sure!
I’ve gotten the “Serv 4wd” light 3 different times on my 21 Gladiator Rubicon 3.6 gas. Going to the dealer on the 30th. Loses 4wd until I shut it off and restart it. Really sucks with a vehicle this new.
Happens on the FAD sensor that is attached to the axle. Make sure that's good to go is my suggestion. I just had to have my sensor extended. I'll be wrapping it heavy in electrical tape.
@@brooktech7869 so the wiring harness wasn’t long enough? I’ll have to look at that for sure. Any more tips would be helpful, thank you! 👍🏻
I’ve had mine for 7000 miles and not one issue I will say when I bought it I heard about the loose fuse issue and check them all found a couple not seated all the way but love it so much fun owning 4xe
Great example of why you should never travel alone. Awesome video!
Gazelle has an "Overlanding" package for their T4 tent. An oversize, waterproof bag, ground tarp and heavy duty tent stakes. Using this and switched the T4 to the T3.... It packs away so easily....With a basic roof rack. 20 lbs vs 100+ lbs,,,
I’m pretty sure your issues have to be screwing up your trail MPGs as I had been hearing the opposite about the 4XE. Curious tho… my 21 has been bulletproof, but it’s a 2 door so that was a given 🤣. Good stuff Brad!
Too bad about the 4xe issues - but this is the kind of torture testing it needs to improve year on year.
Ya, I'm just not sure I want to be a guinea pig deep off-the grid. Confidence in my vehicles ability and reliability are very important to me.
@@TrailRecon Fair enough - thank you for providing a forum for others to observe your experiences and provide input to help the rest of us on buying/driving decisions.
You don't want to be the guinea pig. But I watch your videos BECAUSE you're the guinea pig!
I found something interesting in the manual - a button on the dash next to the locker switch that actives “off-road +”. I am only digging into this because honestly I want the 4xe to be “the one” lol so totally appreciate your channel even more right now. But regarding using that setting (in 4H auto) it says:
When activated, Off Road+ is designed to improve the user experience when using specific Off Road driving modes.
4H (4WD High)
Engine/Transmission Calibration: Improved sand performance/ wheel slip focus, change in shift schedule for sport mode, pedal cali- bration set to aggressive, operates at elevated vehicle speeds
Traction Control: High wheel speed, slip tuning brake lock differential with no engine management
Just wondering if it is something your Jeep is equipped with. Thank you!
@@goofsaddggkle7351 It wasnt thats exclusive to 2021 models and up Rubicons. Its basically Baja Mode on the bronco in 4H and in 4L Raises the RPMS for crawling.
4xe's extra weight in those conditions I would expect worse fuel mileage than a lighter jeep doing the same. I wonder what the temperature is around those batters and how they are cooled. Heat transfer from under the jeep to the batters plus heat generated by the process of those batteries would be my concern.
I’m a firm believer in the kiss method. 4xe is another system that adds unnecessary complexity, just like all the other items on the rubicon like the mechanized sway bar disconnect. My Jeep is basic and built. Lockers, manual disconnect sway bar, etc. I bought a basic Jeep and built it myself. I have a quit a bit less in it than buying a Jeep loaded with complicated mechanicals that are just not necessary
I agree. I was having a conversation with Jordan at camp about a bit of fear of not knowing out to repair modern electrical issues. I think carrying a code reader will be something I start doing.
Thanks for serving, Jordan! I'm with you, that new Bronco is awesome!
I’m here today because of a Navy corpsman so thank you
Glad to hear it! Thank you for your service!
Maybe I just like to push things, but I've taken a stock jlur on 35s on plenty of trails harder than the Rock section they turned around on. You would be surprised how well they do.
As a guy who was introduced to offroading by the Bronco I’ve heard Jeep guys tell me a million times how they’d never buy an unreliable Ford. Truth is: these are all finicky expensive but capable and fun machines. I’ve put 50k on my badsquatch and the only issue I’ve had is replacing a couple tires. I’m just saying Jeep peeps, y’all’s breakdown all the time too.
I miss my Dad. He never got in to camping.
With gas prices climbing like they are I suspect a lot of people will be taking fewer overlanding trips or shorter/closer ones. Some of the fuel prices are getting to the ridiculous point. Fuel mileage is more important than ever. Tough times…
You've probably already solved it, but their is a dealer TSB on that issue, and I had it as well. The front wheel speed sensor harness rubs on an exposed bolt in the steering shaft causing a loss of wheel speed signal. Turns on all the fun lights; DSC, DTC, ABS, srv 4wheel Drive, etc. Seems to be 2020 and newer JL/JT with the harness routing problem. Dealer fixed mine under the TSB at 6.5k miles. I happen to have a '21 JT Rubi Diesel. Under light braking, you can feel that ABS is on the entire time, and that is definitely a wheel speed sensor issue. I didn't get the money light on, but all of the others.
Thanks for commenting on this. I have a 22 JT diesel and it’s been at the dealer for two weeks they haven’t diagnosed the electrical issues I’ve had will certainly bring this to their attention. Do you know what the TSB number is?
Damn jeeps sure are pieces of crap 😂
If you want the tent floor to last more than one time while setting up on small pebbles, lay down a ground cloth (such as a piece of blue tarp) which takes the pressure off the tent floor. Been there done that.
If you are able to stop by a house getting an add-on or most building construction sites, see if they have some extra Tyvek. That works wonderfully as a footprint for a tent. Very durable and weather resistant.
Like your videos, a lot !
You have a very relaxing pleasant way about you. Just getting into a bit of very light off-roading, basically on sand and beach with a Subaru Outback XT 2020.
Have a Bronco OUTERBANKS on order and doing the Bronco Rodeo with my wife this summer, looking forward to it as she just had a life savings liver transplant and this off roading outdoor life style is just what she needs to start to fell alive again.
Best wishes on your wife's recovery! I'm a firm believer that getting outside in nature is vital for good health and well-being.
Did you check to make sure all the 4xe fuses are well seated?
I did when first purchased it.
Fuses are known to come loose on those 4xe's and can cause you problems. As someone who owns a 4xe, I can attest to the fact that it gets horrible mpg once that 20 miles of range runs out. I usually run it in e-save mode and save the battery for when I get onto the trails.
Came here to say this... Loose fuses would cause the Christmas tree lights.
My biggest issue with jeeps in my opinion is it’s always the little stuff that’s a problem. I’m really interested in the Bronco. For now I’ll stick to my Toyota FJ Cruiser. Never let me down. I’m watching to see how that Bronco is . Great info , Great videos 👍

Great Vid Thanks for sharing felt like was on trail .Just picked up a Gladiator traded My TRD Tacoma and havnt looked back.Keep the adventures coming.🇺🇸🍺
Nice thinking Jordan with the steak fat!
I’m totally sold on the hybrid idea and what makes the Wrangler so durable is the the limits are being continuously pushed. You will only make something better when the weaknesses are identified and fixed. The JL has only been out since 2018 and there a bunch of recalls and TSBs already. In the fall of 19’ I bought a new JLUR v6, and they have had to replace a bunch of stuff. Who would’ve thought that the steering gearbox would be so weak. Dealer gladly replaced it with a proper one and problem solved.
Kudos to Jeep for finally bringing what the public wants, like the 4xe, diesel, JT, and 396. It sucks, but with new stuff comes new issues, until they’re fixed.
Great video! Thanks!
Nice jeep is poor in reliability
Good video. But you can't compare the two vehicles mpg when the 4XE has a check engine light on. Especially when it won't let you use the all the electric functions of the 4XE. You should repeat this when both vehicles are functioning normal.
Carry a small magnet. Also picks up bottle caps. Plus throw-away bags for diapers (and disposalbe gloves)
Roof top tents... no joy. Leveling the vehicle (unless it's a Rivian) or leaving for a day trip. And then there is the call of nature after an IPA or two. That ladder dances! And it makes a vehicle more top heavy. And leaving it on... eats mileage. Hard to store without a garage lift kit.
I don't understand why some offroaders call roads, "trails". Is it meant to overstate the significance of the drive? Can't we all just call National Forest Roads or BLM Roads, roads? And call National Forest hiking trails, trails? Let's be real, no one is creating new roads or hiking or climbing a mountain in their Jeep. Myself included.
New to the Jeep thing. We bought the 4XE. It’s our Dailey driver. However was curious is there an app for back country roads or do you download something. Thanks. Really enjoying the content.
Being an owner of 3 Jeeps (2 JK’s, 1CJ) and having about 10 buddys who have JK’s, im not at all surprised yer Jeep is taking a crap. We pay a buttload of money to get away and explore, then you have to second guess where u r goin because the Jeep is not reliable. I will never, ever buy a Chrysler product as long as I live.
Another great video Brad! And thank you both for your service! And BTW...The Jeep's look better on ya! 😁
Your Jeep's seats aren't great? I'm laughing at 6'2 265 pounds in an '05 TJ Rubicon...Worst seats ever.
The 4xe seems to be experiencing growing pains. You said you had 4wd warnings? I only had a dealership loaner but a friend that has owned hers for 6 months is in talks with Jeep about Jeep taking her jeep back. Something going on with the electric motor in the transmission. Her issue started with a warning about her drive system. Hope you just have minor issues. I guess with all new tech you should expect problems.
thanks for helping me make up my mind. I'll never buy a Jeep, FCA product. such POS! 😂 Now to find a Lexus GX460
Have you checked out the Old Dale Mining district yet near Joshua tree? Unbelievable spot for exploring
I worked on a 4xe that the transfer case motor took out the fuse and module, felt like the trans was slipping bad and barely moved.
An off road vehicle should not be this complex there's way too much computer garbage going on with these vehicles. It should be a manual and have Manual hubs and manual 4 wheel drive then you'll never have any problem and if u do you no where it is and what to look for.
You sleep with your jeep door open, at night, in the desert? Don't they have critters there?
No, opened it first thing in the morning to grab my coffee out of the back
Give me an "old school" vehicle any day of the week. The more bells and whistles just gives you more things that can go wrong.
The biggest question is why something so nonchalant like ABS sensor stops Jeeps ability to 4wd. That needs to be coded out and it’s a safety issue they it does stop 4wd engaging because of any error.
I heard you have to check the fuses sometimes they seem to not be set properly coming out of the factory. Then again this is the first video I watch so I don't know how long you had it.
Are lightweight hammock stands, and any of me of hundreds of quality camping hammocks, not a thing for overlanders?
By the time our kids are ready to graduate, often their teenage years has made you say, man I can wait for then to leave for college. Then a few years later one yearns to spend time with them again, totally different experience when they have mentally matured. Then you can think to yourself, man I help make and mold that young man.
Totally respect you Brad for liking Jeeps but man I've seen too many problems with FCA products. That's why I went 4runner. Great video with you and your son!
Can't go wrong with Toyota/Lexus
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Yaa , Ive got a 4runner ...they say "old" but that's why its reliable ...in the middle of nowhere.
30:00 When the "studly 4x4 macho machines" come across a stock Honda Ridgeline... priceles...
For first timers overlanders, where to start? Straight out of gate 392, or get a used Rubicon to beat it up, there are some used with nice upgrades.
I've never had a Jeep with good seats. I'll never stop driving my Jeep, but it seems like more comfortable seats would be something they would think about. I think I'll look at some wrecked vehicles with better seats and make a swap. lol I think the 4Xe is new and they didn't create a ground-up hybrid, they took a Wrangler and modified it. Maybe future models will get better, but I'm sticking with gas or diesel...for now. I really can't wait to see how the Tesla truck does on a trip like this. I think they're ugly, but if they perform...I might be interested. Maybe Tesla will get Brad to do a test trip for us.
We are in the middle of a new car decision too and the Wrangler seats are for sure a distant 3rd place compared to Bronco and 4Runners. Seems like Jeep would have caught onto that by now.
Kinda the exact reason why I wouldn't be driving a hybrid FCA product out in the middle of nowhere...
They tell you 370 HP, but is a lie because when battery goes down, then it is gas only HP 270.
I had so many minor issues with my mustang. I think ford really needs to lift their quality as they make some awesome vechiles but they are just let down by the little details
I am interested in buying a Jeep Wrangler 4xe for over land and was just wondering if you found out what was wrong with your's?
Have you seen Eva zu Beck RUclips channel? She's overlanding across the world in an old Defender.
I'm liking the background musics. Will you be able to share song titles or track titles of the musics. It is relaxing.
Brad I really enjoy your TrailRecon work and I am one of the first members of E3 Overland as well.
Your experience on this trip does highlight the issue with all this wiz-bang technology, which is that sophisticated technology is typically fragile. Jeeps, Range Rovers, Broncos are just not built to aircraft or military standards and will fail over time, often not that long a time. The long term dependability of any of the modern hyper technologically dependent cars is just questionable and for me rules them out as viable overland vehicles where simplicity and dependability are vital. Still all the toys must be fun! Keep up the good work.
That Gazelle T3 is awesome, I know someone who has one and that tent is definitely a homerun!
What a disaster. Did they test these at all before they released them? Lemon-Law buyback for sure.
Rather buy a gas or diesel Jeep. I’ve heard 2 other owners with issues. One traded in and took the hit to go to a gas model and is much happier.
Sucks youtube ruined nature RUclipsrs takes the off grid and puts it on the grid 🤦🏽♂️
I'm shocked the Stellates vehicle has issues. Of course the Bronco's motor may let go at any second.
Go "green" ..... go "broke" .... at some point you have to ask yourself, "Why does this work" ..............
Love the fact that you have both vehicles - leaders in their class - compare head to head. Also the Jeep’s electronic gremlins should never have happened ..Looking forward to learning what the problems were. Your experiences help us to decide which vehicle to buy.
You can get a primitive camp permit and camp just about anywhere in JT, no fires though
So my question is why don't you use the Bronco more often? Did you sell it? I have a Bronco 1st edition and Love it I would never own a jeep again. Yes the seats are amazing LOL i just think the Bronco Handles better off road and feels like you have a lot of control like your son said.
I sold it last year.
The Canadian guy that got one made me not one, too complex, boatload of problems.
In your opinion which one is the best fender Brad .......(Black or the painted one)

Right on! Thanks for hanging out with us on a Friday night!
can't wait for my son to be old enough to do trips like this. great video!
Shoulda kept the diesel. I hope everything on the 4XE gets fixed though.
It’s about content. Be real for a second, Brad is using these vehicles to get views and the same vehicle over and over again gets stale. It’s the same reason TFL started rotating trucks. The OG Raptor videos got stale.
just got the gazelle this month can't wait to test it out on labor day weekend am a tent nut I luv tents...
So what was the diagnosis on all the MIL's that came on? did you have the dealer do a drag?
Hey Brad great video. Please keep us posted on the 4xe. It was with some reservations we ordered ours, exactly for the reasons in this video. PS another Jeep owner suggested I check the fuses when delivered. I'd say 90% of the fuses were not seated properly in the fuse box. I've been told they could work their way loose even after being seated. Maybe your issue?
I was going say the same thing. Check those fuses.
Thank you! I did find a few unseated fuses a week after buying the 4xe. The issue on this trip did end up being some ABS codes. I've since cleared them and not more warning lights... fingers crossed!
@@TrailRecon The question is why even trip those ABS codes? Did the dealer say anything about that? Maybe can you use your connections at Jeep to ask why ABS codes should go haywire when you went off road.
Nice trip you did, but what was finally the problem with the Jeep?
I would love to see you add a Rivian R1T to the stable. Your unbiased “hands on” opinion of the vehicle on and off-road similar to your current 4Xe Wrangler reviews would be awesome for reservation holders like myself. Battery range on and off-road, seat comfort, how practical is the 4.5 ft bed, ride comfort with the standard McLaren inspired air suspension, etc. Brad, keep the high quality videos coming!
Nice video thank you for you service stay safe outside
