I came here after the Mori drama. Comparing you gave it to Kevin “very analogue …higher musicality “ I have to say, knowing what we now know, that you called it and that tells me your highest principle is to give us, the viewer, your HONEST thoughts. You could have easily second guessed it and gone mofi. This is why I like this channel. No bs you call it like you see it. Peace
I love how you said the 50th anniversary version has a more "analog approach" and is more "vinyl" than the mofi edition. looking back on the Mofi drama. lol
Spot on Micheal. To think that this album was almost never released because Berry Gordy thought it was to political for the time yet almost every song on this album hold so many truths of today. This album sounds better than my original pressing ( thank you Dad 🙏🏾) and was totally pleased with this release. I started off listen to the bonus album just to hear how this album came to be. And the mono singles on side 2 of the bonus record was awesome. This is an album that I can sing word for word back in 72 when I was only 8 years old. I own this also on CD and the last one I will be getting is the Detroit mix of this album. I missed out on the MoFi version and I will not pay the money people are asking for it. The 33 1/3 version is how I remember and came to love every song on this album. That the way it was intended to be heard.
I'm relieved to hear you got a clean copy and I don't see any comments below about anyone with problems. Much different that what I read in the customer reviews on Amazon about their pressing/vinyl issues like pops, clicks and scratches. You didn't have any problems and nobody else left a comment noting any problems, so that assures me there's a good chance mine will be clean. Now, to continue working with Universal's web store customer service after they auto-cancelled my pre-order last week and my blood pressure went up. I pre-ordered it on their site when there was a special 40% holiday discount code after reading about this project and hearing it was Kevin Gray doing the mastering. I would have sent it to RTI for the pressings, but I'm sure they had good reasons.
Thank you so much Micheal, you're doing such a fantastic job for vinyl lovers. I appreciate your honesty regarding this album, I've been waiting for a good sounding album for quite some time. The Mofi was too expensive and my original pressing didn't sound good at all. Cheers!
Very great for your doing this video cuz in a month or so I'm going to buy one of those Marvin Gaye's, and I did not know which one was going to sound better and which one I should.. thank you for sharing this my friend
I agree! It sounds amazing. ... and to be clear....there is definitely nothing missing, it's all there in full detail. It's very close to how I suspect it originally sounded, very musical, punchy and gorgeous. I'm so happy I grabbed it. Another piece of history...and a GREAT pressing.
I know this might be a little off the subject but I have a double CD that was remastered back in 2001 by Motown on the Tamla label from the original master tapes using 96k/24-bit technology at Universal Mastering Studios-East. Mastered by: Disc 1 - Kevin Beeves and Disc 2 - Suba Gur. What I love about this copulation besides Marvin playing this complete album live at The kennedy Center (May 1, 1973) on the 2nd disc, is the original "Detroit Mix" of the complete album that was recorded April 5th, 1972. The commercial release was recorded on May 21st, 1971 which is the one every body knows. This Detroit Mix was unreleased and IMHO is the far superior version of this album. It's not just the sound quality but it is funky and has a lot more soul and depth and a little bit different beat, just a more felt performance, It's really different than than the original release. It's like they did a run through of the album for themselves feeling good with no limitations or rules, just playing for the pure fun of it. The "Detroit Mix" is just more real to Marvin Gaye's persona. It's like the "Detroit Mix" just wasn't commercial enough to be released to the general public, and the "Detroit Mix" was the way Marvin envisioned the album before the Studio Heads and executives got involved!

I only have the 50th Anniversary version, so nothing to compare it to, but I love the way it is done. I am very happy to have it. I was also frustrated when it kept getting pushed out. That is the vinyl world we live in.
Fantastic review Michael. I'll be getting that. We should never take any of these releases for granted. Rewind to 1985. Kids think the Internet has been around forever but in 1985 I bought 99.9% of my music on vinyl. What's Going On was approaching mythical status for me because, believe it or not, it was deleted and you couldn't buy it. I searched everywhere and gave up when Terry Hooley (Good Vibrations) said it just isn't available. I finally heard it through my cousin who picked it up second hand in London. It would take 3 years before I got my own copy when it was reissued as a double CD with Let's Get It on - no vinyl release. So I'm away to buy it now for the fourth or fifth time 👍
Such a long awaited release, sadly im still waiting :( lucky you for having received it before the 29th. Great video as always 👍🏽 so excited to check out the quality of the release for myself.
I agree with you 100% on this Kevin Gray issue. I listened to it 4 days in a row after receiving it. I can’t remember the last reissue I did that with. It’s that good. First 3 listens on my main turntable, 4th on a secondary on the same system. Still sounded amazing. I don’t have the MoFi, but I can’t even imagine how would one would split side A over two sides at 45rpm, as it is a continuous side. The fade-out must be very awkward on the MoFi. It wasn’t meant to be broken up. It’s like trying to break up Dark Side of the Moon….
Incredible album and absolutely stunning edition. No idea if it’s the best record of all time but it is definitely one of the best soul/R&B records of all time. Glad you did the comparison…

Get review, you convinced me Michael, I just ordered the 50th anniversary kevin Gray cut. Thank you for all your efforts that you put into your channel.
The Amazon reviews are relentless on this one - only like 50% at 5 stars. I wasn't sure if that was just sheer pickiness and hyperfixation that there would be quality control issues, or if there are actual issues. You have inspired me to give it a shot!
Many owners on Amazon were talking about problems after getting on their turntable and playing it back. It had me wondering what's going on. (No pun intended)
Totally agree with you Michael, I received my copy a couple weeks ago and it has been played daily. A truly gorgeous pressing and I do have the One Step which although it sounds great, it really should have been done at 33 rpm because the 45 version breaks up the flow and continuity of the album. I love both but the 50th Anniversary version is clearly my favorite.
I’m glad you are getting time to do this. I also have both copies and the Kevin Gray copy is all that you said that it is and it has more bass and sharp is a good word for it for the MFSL copy. The MFSl is a little too perfect sort of speak. The Kevin Gray copy is just right with everything in there in just the right amounts. MFSl needs to have Kevin Gray working for them. Keven Gray is one bad dude and definitely the Rudy Van Gelder of his time. This Marvin Gaye 2nd disc has the extra Acapella stuff added on and it gives you the sense of just how talented Marvin Gaye was and just how well his voice was. This man could really sing. The record is timeless because the things that he talked about so long ago are still present today. If you are an Audiophile and a Marvin Gaye fan of this album then this is the release to get, especially if you missed the MFSL copy. There are some pressing issues, but if you get a great copy you are in business. Record 2 (from my original copy) copy was partially stuck to the paper, but a deep clean took care of this, but the substance and paper left a small mark that is inaudible. If you are a collector, you will want both so that you can really appreciate what Kevin Gray has done and the fact that the MFSL-One Step is rising in value, like anything else Mofi- MFSL in limited quantities. This 2nd release is all that the MFSL should have been for a whole lot less money and yes Michael, Analogue is the right word for this second release, Analogue indeed.
Kevin Grey is one of the very best ! With this pressing I think he paid special attention to the original and in so doing nailed it ! It is an amazing sounding record of definitely audiophile quality! That warm tubey sound is definitely to my taste !
I agree Michael. Great video. Would love to see the same treatment given to the rest of his discography especially I Want You, Here My Dear and Trouble Man.
I have been waiting so long for my copy too - still nothing! Glad to hear your thoughts though, I feel like I'm going to love this pressing. My only copy is a Japanese pressing, its not terrible but it is very bright sounding where it should not be
Thank you Michael I liked your review at the time but of course now this review resonates even more and just shows what a great ear you have for digital vs analog. I had the feeling during the review you almost wanted to say is this one step really analog ? but of course with their process described within the box who would dare say otherwise. Very nice effort from an audiophile we can trust cheers Carl Australia
Excellent video, Micheal. I too came to the same conclusion comparing these two editions. Love the natural musical feel of Kevin's cut. It works better at 33, as originally envisioned. This recording was not an inspired choice for a 2x45, no matter how super duper the process and pressing
Beautiful review people was telling me to get the One Step I passed because it broke up the continuous aspect which I love when I got this one I was completely floored Kevin Gray is a wonder and his work is magical . Michael I always dig your honesty great video . Lovellandrew
Thanks Michael. Besides the more “analogue” sound, you could (should?) also include the fact that 33rpm/2 LP-sides gives a more un-interrupted musical experience than 45rpm/4 LP-sides. And more like the album was originally made.
Are very good album iv been playing this album Marvin gay for many years il try & get ur versions of that new vinyl of Marvin gays new version of what's going on, 👌🇺🇲👍😁🤓
Michael, have you mention somewhere the incoming realese from Craft Recordings "THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET - RELAXIN’ WITH THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET (SMALL BATCH, ONE-STEP PRESSING)"? Now they are doing 5000 of them. I think they heard your request. :)
Another great review. Options are always good. The two versions are complimentary. One 33rpm and sounding more true to the original in relaxed presentation. Extras are icing on the cake. Nice. Then, the One-Step is great for hearing details in the mix but maybe not the best experience when just kicking back to enjoy this iconic album. I did have to deal with some pressing issues to get a final good copy. And, the sleeves left some very minor paper marks. Grrr.
The anniversary edition of this pop masterpiece will, no doubt, be in my products of the year list. The One Step has already been sold. I won’t listen to it again after spending with two weeks with the two. Personal choice of course. Great review.
I own both copies of this amazing music. Micheal, you are spot on with your analysis. Both have their own strengths with no real weaknesses. Having owned this LP back in the 70's I am used to the 33RPM version and prefer that presentation.
Shame about the inner sleeves. One of my sleeves was crumpled because the sleeves are quite snug. Also the vinyl needs a good cleaning before playing or transferring to new inner sleeves. Other than that, it is a great release.
Hmmm i detect a lack of experience or just staggeringly good luck here. Id definately class GZ above MPO/Rainbo/URP and theyve certainly improved but its still a regular lottery with GZ. Optimal has really gone backwards which masks GZ's failings somewhat. Only Record Industry and Pallas in the EU can be consistently and heavily relied upon. GZ and Optimal are 50/50 and MPO cant press barely a single record without non fill!
@@tomwebb7091 you’re right, but I think most people just repeat things they heard without knowing much, as in your case. I think GZ has come a long way, and hopefully all plants can be reliable and consistent someday. Existing and future plants, that everyone needs
@@tomwebb7091 I dunno. I just bought two copies of the 45 rpm version of Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" pressed at Pallas and they're off-center. I bought them at different stores to see if maybe the first was just a fluke, but here they are. It's most noticeable on the second disc of each set. I don't really want to return them and then be unpleasantly surprised by a third or fourth off-center copy.
I ordered it from Amazon but got the single disk back To black version. There was A fault on the productpage So I got A full refund and didn’t have To return the album👍 Now stil waiting on the correct version.
Hello Michael I got my copy today. I got the printed inner sleeves in the cover and the records themselves were in polyline inner sleeves. Apparently something was changed in the packaging
I found the interior packaging disappointing as well - the LPs were crammed into the inner sleeves. These looked great but not glued so well. My one LP came scratched with one track damaged and I have sent it back for a replacement. Online forums suggested others also had complaints about the quality. The sound for the tracks that worked was amazing, and so I have my fingers crossed for a clean replacement.
Hello I play my mono records with a pure mono cartridge which does only the lateral pick up. My question: is the mono side of WGO real mono groove because if not a pure mono cartridge would bring damage to the grooves.
Thanks for the video. I’m lucky to have the One Step but unlucky to have an addiction to records so I’ll pick this up as well. Lots of complaints on pressing quality at the moment so I might wait. Out of curiosity, do you happen to like the Dave Matthews Band? Keep up the good work.
Sorry to break up the party but I am on my fourth copy with the same defect on all. Side A last track has repeating loud tick/zip sound for the last 20 or so revolutions. Other than that I agree with all the comments on the quality of the remastering. Why do I have to get all the defective versions???
Great video and thank you. My one criticism is that this review is geared towards experienced audiophiles. I am interested in audiophile aspect of music and would like to learn more...but how do these compare to standard reissue? I think the next generation, which is main reason for vinyl resurgence could use more exposure to quality pressings. Otherwise, record companies will just keep releasing crap, but making limited editions with colored vinyl effects and extra propaganda to market more sales. How can a new buyer distinguish between a quality pressing versus a over-hyped marketed pressing?
It goes to show you the importance of mastering. The one step has all the "advantages" to create the reference copy for this release. However, it falls short because of inferior mastering. Also, the 50th anniversary release proves you do not need to spend $100 plus to get an amazing listening experience.
Michael thanks for the video. Couple of points 1. I received my copy couple of weeks ago direct from USA to the UK and seems to be different version from yours . My cover is a trifold not gatefold with 3 high quality a4 photos in the centre trifold pocket which are ideal for framing . Same Kevin Gray etc etc . 2. I have an original pressing and a MOFI 33rpm version (which came out before the one step) and of course this new one. Very surprised to say I think I prefer the MOFI which has for me much clearer and pronounced backing vocals from Marvin. Nevertheless great to have this new affordable version available with some fantastic extras. My favourites being the original version of Flying High with The Originals on backing vocals and the excellent stripped down version of the title track.
Wow thanks for letting me know. The std edition is then a real bargain and a no brainier purchase. Should have said in my earlier comment that this album should only be in a 33rpm format. The first side is a classic suite which should not be broken up.
Very interesting Michael, I'm looking forward to my copy. I have the normal 33 MFSL and the One Step. It will be interesting to compare the 33s. As for this release - Kevin Gray - nothing more needs to be said. The guy is a genius. How I'll sell the One Step now is a mystery 🤣
Mike i tend to agree with you brother, Kevin's work is VERY hard to beat and he always finds the sweet spot in his masteiring. Mke, do you remember that recently there was i believe a 40th or 45th anniv. edition of this same title not to long ago and it seemed to be about the exact same item as this new release and it also had all of the b-sides,etc.,etc and it had the original repress of th e vinyl along with ,if i remember correctly also had 2,3 or 4 compact discs with it as well. BUT my question, is if anyone knows or remembers, were the same plates used with both pressings/versions?
Hi Michael, further to the Mofi debacle, I want your help please. I have the Back to Black single LP version. Is this also done by Kevin Grey? Any thoughts on the quality of the Back to Black pressing?
I'm torn - the majority of the Amazon reviews talk about poor pressing with lots of noise on side 2, with many of the customers having gone through their 2nd & 3rd copies without improvement...
I’ve found with Amazon reviews that they will post reviews of various issues of an album on the product page. Next time you are on an Amazon pre-order page see if you don’t find that there are already reviews posted for that product. Also, many times I’ve seen reviews talking about a CD version when I’m shopping for vinyl. That being said, reviewers like Michael haven’t let me down yet! And he’s right again when it comes to this 50th anniversary issue. It’s excellent.
Thanks a lot for this video...at last an album i can actually buy!!!!! I am confused as there seems to be a couple of versions.....one has 'Deluxe Edition 50th anniversary' on the footer of the cover and another does not.....I see it in amazon Spain and Fnac as two examples for over 50 euros yet in Germany the other example seems to be 25 euros...and in your links you have the two versions it seems? can you clarify? also they are not on sale until 29th April.....for once I would like to buy exactly what you have reviewed here as I favour the traditional LP sound as you commented and 'sharp' is not what I want on a record. I have this album already of course but I think this is a must buy version. Also for me 33 1/3 all the way as 45rpm just breaks the continuity of the appreciation of 'the whole'
The Kevin Gray cut is the best reissue! My NM 1st press is also excellent. I did purchase the One-Step and it was a huge disappointment, and I did sell it for quite a bit. The album was produced as a song cycle each side. So splitting up the songs is a crime and it does not sound right.
@jammko1970 Do you think this is a dramatic improvement over the 1st pressing? I also have a clean original and I’m trying to figure out if I need the new one.
Totally agree about the one step album. The choice of where to split the sides is bizarre, it totally ruins the listening experience. I never play mine for that reason
While I don't have the One Step to compare, I can say without a doubt the Kevin Gray beats OG pressings by a mile. You described it perfectly. It was everything I hoped it would be when I pre-ordered it. Everyone needs this record in their collection. THIS is what they should be focusing on, great releases like this instead of bullshit Van Halen One steps. Really, Van Halen is audiophile? Do we need that? And splitting them all on 2 disks? Dumb.
I got the 2021 Japanese reissue. I wonder if it uses the same master as this 50th anniversary reissue. Does anybody know? Japanese reissues are generally notorious for not giving out any such information!
Hey Michael, just an update due to an EU version now appearing that was mastered in the UK & pressed in Ireland. People should be aware of this other version.
@@Michael45RPM Packaging yes, but likely LP1 is a digital master rather than the Kevin Gray analogue cut. No comments regarding sound quality or comparing the two versions that I’ve seen yet.
I can't wait, I've mine coming next month with a few other orders. is it just me, or does it feel like the one steps that go up against analogue productions don't fair too well.
I'm one of the few people who don't really care for the sound of this album. Full disclaimer, I have not listened to other vinyl versions of this, but I feel like it's just too laid back and unfulfilling. Kind of like when you only have a little bit of water in your glass, and you're really thirsty.
@Ruben Ramero Thanks, more than likely it's my system and also what I tend to like in recordings. I have to say, as a whole I love how my system presents music. I tend to like a punchier drums and I definitely expected this to lean that way, but it didn't. In no way am I saying it's not good - just not one of my better sounding albums (for me).

You inadvertently spotted the digital sharpness in the MoFi “one step” edition. Wow.
Watching this after the Mofi gate debacle puts this review in a whole different light. Bravo, you nailed it 👏
With the whole MoFi thing your review of these two versions makes a lot sense now. 👏

My only copy is a Japanese pressing, its not terrible but it is very bright sounding where it should not be
Definitely one of my favourites.
Not sure this aged too well
@@joebloggs8636- yeah it’s digital DSD right ?
Excellent video, Micheal. I too came to the same conclusion comparing these two editions. Love the natural musical feel of Kevin's cut. It works better at 33, as originally envisioned. This recording was not an inspired choice for a 2x45, no matter how super duper the process and pressing
Beautiful review people was telling me to get the One Step I passed because it broke up the continuous aspect which I love when I got this one I was completely floored Kevin Gray is a wonder and his work is magical . Michael I always dig your honesty great video . Lovellandrew
Incredible music. Timeless.
Kudos on this review. You have provided real information.
Nice review. The Kevin Gray version is great value for the money at
The digital cut vinyl already sounds pretty terrific. Ill probably go for 50th
Thanks Michael.
Besides the more “analogue” sound, you could (should?) also include the fact that 33rpm/2 LP-sides gives a more un-interrupted musical experience than 45rpm/4 LP-sides. And more like the album was originally made.
Great review, Michael!
A masterpiece!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Yeees one of my favorite album,
Are very good album iv been playing this album Marvin gay for many years il try & get ur versions of that new vinyl of Marvin gays new version of what's going on, 👌🇺🇲👍😁🤓
Michael, have you mention somewhere the incoming realese from Craft Recordings "THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET - RELAXIN’ WITH THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET (SMALL BATCH, ONE-STEP PRESSING)"? Now they are doing 5000 of them. I think they heard your request. :)
They sure did :-)
Fantastic video like always incredible
Nice comparison on both releases! I was very impressed with the album.
Deluxe version is a Trifold and includes individually printed photos inside.
Hi, i have just seen this video and you have made my mind up which version to get. Thank you.
Great video, thanks Michael. Sibilance is never a great sign at all. I feel motivated to pick up a 50th Anniversary copy of this LP.
Now with sound!
Fortunate to have a signed 1st pressing of this masterpiece.
It’s an amazing pressing. People just tend to echo bad things about GZ, without much knowledge in my opinion. All Gz pressings I have are very good
Hmmm i detect a lack of experience or just staggeringly good luck here.
There was A fault on the productpage So I got A full refund and didn’t have To return the album👍
Now stil waiting on the correct version.
Hello Michael
I got my copy today. I got the printed inner sleeves in the cover and the records themselves were in polyline inner sleeves. Apparently something was changed in the packaging
From the EU?
Love this pressing version.
That’s probably ’non-fill’.
Who said that you can´t tell the difference between analog and digital. At least with your ears, your equipment and your room.
You do now considering the EU/UK version debacle. The 🇺🇸 one is all anybody wants.
I have the 40th anniversary edition of this record. With the Detroit mix on it.
Michael thanks for the video. Couple of points
That's the Limited Edition with the three prints and it costs $20 more than the Standard 2LP.
Wow thanks for letting me know. The std edition is then a real bargain and a no brainier purchase. Should have said in my earlier comment that this album should only be in a 33rpm format. The first side is a classic suite which should not be broken up.
Just discovered my version bought on Amazon UK is a digital file mastered by someone else despite the Kevin Gray in the hype sticker.
45RPM preferring 33 1/3 version? You'll have to change your name!!! I had to order mine from Amazon since my normal sources were shorted.
Is this Kevin Grey editiod still available ..where can i find it in Europe?
thx for the help
You can’t get the Kevin Gray PRECISION pressing outside of the 🇺🇸.
You can and i did..few months ago tho.
take care@@UFO_computers
Hi Michael, further to the Mofi debacle, I want your help please. I have the Back to Black single LP version. Is this also done by Kevin Grey? Any thoughts on the quality of the Back to Black pressing?
You guessed right!
Hello ...where did you getyour copy... I don't think you mentioned it in your video. Vinyl Me Please, Accoustic Sounds, Amazon ?
Amazon
Do you have the 2016 half speed master to compare to?
no sorry
Kevin Gray did an outstanding job! Have you heard the new chili peppers record? It’s fantastic and AAA vinyl mastering.
No do not have it yet
@@Michael45RPM oh it’s wonderful to have a modern day album cut all analog. Cut by Bernie Grundman straight from the tape.
Is there a significant difference in quality between the 40th Anniversary release and the 50th in sound quality?
@@xentakis I would say you’re good if you have a clean first pressing. it was originally mastered very well.
Totally agree about the one step album. The choice of where to split the sides is bizarre, it totally ruins the listening experience. I never play mine for that reason
@@Jamko1970 thank you!
@@anthonydavies9093 sound quality is great though.
Dumb.
It’s really that much better than OG?
@@xentakis Yes. OG is thin and lifeless. My 90's CD sounds better. This new one is a no brainer.
I got the 2021 Japanese reissue. I wonder if it uses the same master as this 50th anniversary reissue. Does anybody know? Japanese reissues are generally notorious for not giving out any such information!
Should listen to the "Detroit Mix" the mix is incredible. A Must. Rick Rubin talked about it in the last Lex Fridman podcast.
i love Lex Fridman!
Hey Michael, just an update due to an EU version now appearing that was mastered in the UK & pressed in Ireland. People should be aware of this other version.
Is it otherwise the same?
@@Michael45RPM Packaging yes, but likely LP1 is a digital master rather than the Kevin Gray analogue cut. No comments regarding sound quality or comparing the two versions that I’ve seen yet.
@@chriss6302- Just discovered mine is the non-KG cut. I’m livid. Bought it about 9 mo’s ago and didn’t hear about the rip-off debacle by UME
I personally like Let’s Get It On more. But, this is a great album.
How do you get your mic sound to be so good? Teach me this witchcraft
external microphone thats all
I can't wait, I've mine coming next month with a few other orders.
is it just me, or does it feel like the one steps that go up against analogue productions don't fair too well.
Hello Michael, what"s going on?
The 2016 version cost me £20.00 GBP and sounds fabulous on my Rega P8/atheta3/aria..
