Just wanted to add some clarification because there seems to be some confusion in the community. As of right now (this may change if you are looking at this comment in the future) you are still able to register to be a potential beta tester for Space Marine 2 on Focus' website. The announcement that Focus put out on June 28th clarifies that they will not be allowing players to beta test the game in any capacity before release. I think this situation would be a bit less confusing if they simply removed the ability to register as someone who is interested in being a beta tester from their website. Additionally, if you were already registered through Focus' website for any sort of beta testing for Space Marine 2 before June 28th you will be given a Bolt Pistol skin in the launched version of Space Marine 2. TLDR: Don't bother signing up for the Space Marine 2 Beta on Focus' website because it won't do anything - there isn't going to be a beta.
The beta wasn't "cancelled", ever since the game was delayed winter of last year they made it pretty clear a beta was a possibility, not a certainty. All the wording on the beta was changed to reflect this, people just didnt check up after the delay.
This is good insight and I will use this as an opportunity to learn and improve my content. Upon reflecting, I think I should have leaned my verbage more in the direction of requesting a playable demo so that people could test the game on their systems. The primary point of my video still stands, we should have a system requirements list available at this point in the development / release cycle.
Betas are really time consuming. You take your current build 3-6 months before you want to run your beta and branch off your main development branch. Then you code in your beta branch and polish it up to standard. Then when beta is over you throw it away mostly as you have 3-6 months work on your main dev branch. Some things can be pulled in from the beta branch. While all this is happening you are splitting the dev team into two projects. It’s expensive in resource terms to have a beta. Also a mild gamble with regards to how stable your servers are on day one. It’s build on wwz engine though so they have plenty of experience there.
Yeah, im sure because of the previous delay they are not allowed anymore delays by their higher-ups , so i optimisticly assume that they just dont have to time to give us a proper beta build until release
Its Saber Interactive, as a long WWZ player buggs that were at release (2019) are still in the game and players keep complaining but nooo here are some new cosmetics!... for a price😅
Every one angry about the beta being canceled, but I swear every other game that has had a beta like this in the past year or two has been quite trash, let the people work on the game so it’s as good as we want it to be
As a dev I can say that it's a good decision. It takes a lot of time and manpower to prepare the beta and everything that surrounds it. It's better for them to focus on important thing and polish what the need to polish before the release.
@@Jeficus Generally speaking it's always better to let people play earlier (even if their aim is to play for the sake of playing rather than provide and feedback) because you have some additional feedback from a bigger audience, playing on different specs etc. In the other hand - I'm pretty sure that they had a dozen of focus tests and hired a company that acted as outsource for their QA. Theres an easy fix. Just dont trust any pre release reviews nomatter how theryre from and wait for reviews from actual players who didnt get the game early.
I agree with your concerns. I am a console player and had really hoped the beta would show me how the game performed on console. Everything about the game looks good but how well it performs is the only thing I am not sure about. Honestly I would not be surprised if we get the stupid 30fps bullshit on console again because the game is to demanding. Either that or a massive visual downgrade in order to get 60fps.
Totally summed up my concerns about this. I really really really hope it isn't a red flag, and I mean, I won't lie I'm gonna pre-order it anyways. But it certainly raises eyebrows.
Space Marine 2 looks cool and I look forward to playing it. I enjoyed Space Marine 1 a decade ago. However fundamentally I don't expect it's combat to be as engaging to me as the depth of 'Tide's melee system which I absolutely love. Also amongst the hype last year (when we assumed SM2 was to be released at Christmas) there was a surprisingly critical hands-on preview in PC Gamer from Ted Litchfield published 25 August 2023: "Space Marine 2 is a rare throwback to the Xbox 360-era shooter, but it's missing some of what made those games great" How much you trust PC Gamer may make your mileage vary* but I did find it very interesting that they were willing to go against the grain AND risk a bit of backlash from publishers by saying it. This was almost a year ago and Sabre have had lots of time to cook since but I did find some of the comments interesting. The "mouthfeel" of combat might have been one of the reasons it was pushed back from the Winter '23 release. *PC Gamer do seem to really love DT despite the flaws - even going as far as calling it "Best Ongoing Game 2023: Warhammer 40,000 - Darktide")
*It all fell apart with the combat, though. My entire time playing, I found myself yearning for Auroch's Boltgun instead. They're setting out to be very different shooters, but Boltgun nails the Space Marine fantasy of being an angry silverback in power armor. I still felt like a gorilla in Space Marine 2, but maybe one already half-sedated by a tranq dart after a toddler tumbled into his enclosure. Titus just doesn't feel responsive, launching into slow, lumbering combos with his chainsword that I can't cancel out of when it's time for an Arkham-style omnidirectional parry. The counter windows are blessedly generous, but I'd be hammering the left bumper to counter (Space Marine 2 did not feel right on mouse and keyboard) as Titus languidly worked through a pirouette strike with his chainsword, a successful riposte far from guaranteed.* The weapons don't carry that oomph for me either-these feel like assault rifles and submachine guns and not bolters, and I think they could do with deeper, punchier audio and more dramatic enemy reactions to getting hit with micro-missiles. I was also disappointed by the chainsword, which rather than ripping and tearing would smack against tyranids like a pool noodle. There's just no chew "*

This game simply looks too good to be true. And 90% of the time, if something looks too good to be true, it is. Cancelling the beta just feels like the devs arnt confident in their own product. And that is reason enough to be concerned. If we got a demo, this would be different. But this blog post looked like the perfect opportunity to remedy the beta cancellation with a demo. They didnt do that so i guess a demo is off the table. Im now back to expecting a cyberpunk situation. Lets hope im wrong.
If this gets a delay once more. I know it will be a mess. And others will say "Better have it fixed than disappointed". THEN WHY EVEN SET THAT KIND OF DATES IF IT'S STILL NOT READY?! Wait for the game to come one and let it simmer for a week. Yall don't want to feel what we felt when WWZ released.
The reasons they cancelled the beta are the reasons betas exist. Something smells wrong.....sweet baby levels of wrong. If there are issues that need fixing that are bad enough to cancel a beta, you won't get them fixed within a couple months.
