The Gryffindor Common Room is a stone castle. I made an opulent fireplace using cardboard and egg carton "stones". Learn the "strip method" here to create stone walls and floors without laying pieces one by one.
I modified Bentley House Minis' 1:12 fireplace room box kit by making the walls even taller and the floor larger.

Some of my favorite things:
Double-sided flooring tape

Miter Shears- these are the clippers I use to cut pieces of wood and toothpicks etc

Oyu Pla/Oyumaru reusable mold putty

Cheaper clear mold putty I haven't tried

Heat gun- I use mine to quickly dry paint, soften the glue to dismantle furniture and quickly cure polymer clay without an oven. Gets a lot hotter than a hair dryer.

3:34 "" there's probably a mathematical formula to figure this sort of thing out, but I like to avoid math around here ""
I love that quote :)
Yes, me too. Love it.
Absolutely! This is for fun, not for misery 😆
I completely agree with that! As little math as possible here!
Yeah it's great!! 😂😂😂
amen sister
I live in England in a 500yr old Tudor house and have an inglenook with two built in cushioned benches and bookcases recessed in on either side of the fireplace. As long as you have the chimney regularly swept it's completely safe and isn't any more prone to carbon monoxide than any other open fireplace. Honestly sitting 'in' the fireplace on a cold Winter's evening with a good book and a cup of tea is absolute Heaven, especially when it's raining.
Wow! It must get so hot.
Wow Nickie - I'm jealous...
Omg sound heaven 😀
Marked safe from math. Your carpet tape idea is brilliant!
Right?! I discovered the flooring tape while working on a full size project installing sheet vinyl.
That's beautiful! I love the carpet tape. No more warping!
Me too!! It's my favorite discovery ever. Not only no warping, but no waiting.
@@queencityminisI did not know about this!!! Thank you😎✌✌✌
This is so fun for me for 2 reasons: First I get to see this awesome room come together and learn new things from your methods, and second, I get to see how you change up my kit and repurpose the pieces! The makeover of the fireplace pieces was great!
I can't even express how grateful I am to have the Fireplace Room Box kit to work from. It's so much easier to make a plan when you have something to work with rather than making everything up from scratch. I usually struggle with decision paralysis but I'm not worried since cardboard is easy to cut and easy to fix if I change my mind. It's funny how many of the pieces work so well for adapting to the Gryffindor Common Room.
Looking good! I, for one, always appreciate your efforts at avoiding math. 😂 The paper pulp is a great idea and it’s pretty easy to make if you’re ever in need and don’t have a tray like that handy. ❤
Thanks so much! I haven't made my own paper pulp yet. Seems messy!
I really love your sense of humor!
Thank you for watching 😊
I think your fireplace looks really great. You did a fantastic job on it.
Thank you so much! I'm happy with the changes I made.
That fireplace bench you removed would be my spot in the Gryffindor common room. I’m sure magical fire is cosy but safe.
Very true! Maybe the students perform a flame freezing charm.
Good morning 🌄🌞 blessings ☕ awesome 👍🏾
You too! Thank you 😊
Great tips and tricks per usual Shyra! Especially for working with cardboard.🤗
Thanks so much! 😊 It's so easy to work with.
Nice work on the big fireplace! Entertaining as usual...I love your wit.
Thank you very much!
Your creativity and the ability to adapt is remarkable. 😊❤
Thank you so much 😀
Shyra the fireplace is looking amazing. 🔥❤ ~Lesley
Thank you Lesley!
Glad you are working on the room. Fireplace looks great. Have a wonderful Saturday and Easter.😇🥰😇🥰😇
Thank you! You too!
The fireplace looks fabulous! Thank you for this great tutorial!
You are so welcome!
Tip: I use spray glue to attach pieces of paper/cardboard and even fabric to paper. You only need a light misting and then I weigh it down to really “take hold”.
I use Gorilla Spray Adhesive Heavy Duty or Loctite High Performance.
It saves A LOT of time and aggravation. It’s also cheaper in the end .
(DO NOT USE the Dollar Tree spray glue. It’s about 95% water and it doesn’t stick anyway. )
Thank you! I've never thought of using spray adhesive.
So fun and satisfying to watch! Great job.
Thank you 🤗
How cute this turned out. I enjoy your videos and can imagine in my mind the things I want to create again. Have a great day
Thanks so much 😊 I keep a list of project ideas so I don't forget
I love how this is coming along!!!! The fire place looks amazing!❤❤❤
Thanks! I'm so excited to start making accessories.
It looks magnificent! Thanks, Kathleen
Thanks Kathleen!
So clever! It is looking amazing already. ❤
Thank you! 😊
It looks so good! I think using the edge of the paper pulp tray for the stone trim was brilliant. Pretty sure I wouldn't have seen/thought of that. But I will now! Looking forward to the crest. I'm rooting for future you.
Thanks so much! 😊 I've been contemplating how to make it.
Idk if the size would work but there are several different Gryffindor crests as wax seal stamps. Could be an option to use them with hot glue and paint
This fireplace looks amazing!
Thank you 😊
This was a great tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
After this whole project will be finished this is going to be a masterpiece..... Will be eagerly waiting for the next video from you. ❤❤
Thank you so much 😀
Before the advent of the Franklin Stove, many foyers had a fireplace with a couple of benches on either side. This allowed guests to warm up before coming into the house. The bench inside of the Griffindor common room, was probably for people to warm up in a stoney cold castle.
So weird! Seems dangerous.
Love that fireplace! Well done! Your comment about the bench inside the common room fireplace made me laugh out loud. What the heck? I never noticed that before but WHY? 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Apparently that's a normal thing from medieval times? Live it up when you only live to your 20s, I guess.
@@queencityminis also got to thinking about how huge castles made of stones were probably bone-chillingly cold. Maybe a short session in the fireplace nook would've been impossible to resist under the circumstances...
It looks so flipping good!!!!! Even before painting anything.
Thank you!
I love your videos. I've recently started making minis and customizing kits. You have inspired me so much that I'm about to start my own RUclips channel! Thank you for sharing your creations.
That is awesome! Email me at queencitydollminiatures@gmail.com if you'd like some advice.
I like to avoid math around here too. Btw, that made me laugh out loud! 😂😂😂
Birds of a feather!
I love texture so much! This is gorgeous😍
Thank you so much 🤗 Egg carton has the best texture.
Beautifully made thank you for sharing 💕💕💕
My pleasure 😊
Coming along nicely!
Thank you 😊
The fireplace is Amazing!!
Thank you! I'll add some soot and a fire later. Plus the monkey on my back aka the Gryffindor Crest.
Fantastic work and like I’ve said before I love how you talk your thoughts out loud 😀 I’m not a fan of math lol x
Glad you enjoyed! I'm impatient so I like to keep a project moving. Math harshes my vibe.
Thank you for the tape tip!
You bet! It's one of my favorite products.
Looks awesome!
Thank you 😊
Amazing you've got a new subscriber!! 😊🥰💖
Welcome 🙂
I wish this video had posted a couple of weeks ago before I did my nightmare of a cooking hearth!
Oops! I hope it wasn't too bad.
@queencityminis Lost a small bit of my thumb is all. LOL. But I got it done. The thumb will heal eventually.
That is so awesome!!!😮😮😮😮😮❤❤❤
Thank you 😊
Ur so damn good w/ exacto knife. My straight cuts look more like circles or squiggles. Ha
My cuts get pretty wonky. I'm glad I'm using Bentley House Minis' kit since the pieces are laser cut
I hate math and measuring too, it always ends up wonky, eyeballing it it usually neater for me 😝
That's funny!
I, too, avoid Math whenever possible. That looks amazing so far - can't wait to see the finished room! After thought: You could have exchanged the fireplace lounge with a BBQ spit. Human size, if you know what I mean. 😈
I try not to math at all and if I get stuck I can count on my husband who maths really well. 😂
So dark 😆
Looking forward to seeing what she does w/ the drapes & the upolstered sofa!
@@queencityminis I'll say it, so you don't risk losing followers. 😁
It looks so great! ❤
Thank you!!
I love how this turned out! I am not a Harry potter fan at all... but I do love what b you are doing and can't wait to see more! How do you get such clear video angles of you working on things? I imagined it strapped to your head but quickly realized that would be so inconvenient 😂😅
Thank you so much!! I use a camera arm that's bolted to the wall behind me. It shoots straight down on my table, but it can be adjusted.
I also have an adjustable height desk so I can lower the desk to shoot a wider frame.
If you need help with that crest, Raven minis has a video on the fireplace from Dumbledore's office that may be useful. Hope this helps. I'm excited to see how this project develops. Thanks for sharing.
I know! I saw it. Sculpting it from clay sounds like a nightmare for me though. Chantel is really talented with clay.
Yes, she is. I don't know what else you could make a crest out of, but I'm sure you'll come up with something.
How did I not ever notice the bench IN the fireplace 😂
I didn't notice it until I started looking at photos close up
How long have you had that “glorious” pulp try knowing what it was going to be?
Luckily, I have a scarcity mindset so I kept hanging onto it and not using it bc it was my only one. Then I found the perfect place for it (and had to look for it for 20 mins since I've been packing and didn't know where it was).
Great
Thank you 😊
Fabulous! I💜it!
Thank you 😊
こんにちは。あなたのビデオは素敵です😍
Thank you 😊
There’s too much math in the world, this kind of anti-math content helps me relax 😂
Looks so good! The egg carton is so perfect, it’s crazy! It’s exciting how it’s coming together.
Did I see that correctly or is Griffindor spelled with an extra U in it on the image you were using as reference? Like Griffindour?! Wasn’t that the WB tour? Or Maybe Godric spelled his last name differently… who knows.
I've never noticed it spelled that way. Interesting! I don't like it 😆
How safe is the tape, i know theres a thing about acid in tapes that can cause issues over time, also how long will it last. I also have the room box kit and going to be building it soon
Acid in tape can affect things like photos. This won't cause that issue.
It's meant to last for decades with people walking on it. I think it's more secure than glue since it's technically glue but it's reinforced with fibers.

I like to avoid Math where possible too...who the heck needs that kind of mental gymnastics interrupting the creative flow? lmao
Exactly. I take the "Little Gretchen's Workshop" approach to building.
