I flipped a Fantastic Merchandise fireplace. it's a vintage piece that was already beautiful. I used a really simple technique of my own creation to antique the mirror.
This not only looks cool, but it solves a major miniature mirror issue. When mirrors reflect your camera, face, or other full-size things in the real world, it can ruin the miniature effect. Antiquing the mirror retains some reflectivity, but mostly obscures the mirror.
I used cork bricks I made in a previous video to cover the wooden bricks on the lower half and to make the wooden hearth look realistic. I love how this turned out!
    Some of my favorite things:
Miter Shears- this pair is highly rated and has replaceable blades
    amzn.to/3LchlUy
Nail Studs- I like these because there are a variety of sizes in silver and brass
    amzn.to/3JEtJMd
For under $10, you get a variety of jump rings, lobster clasps and pliers
    amzn.to/3Zu7sGd
Paper fasteners & 1/8" hole punch
    amzn.to/3O5nYI6
2 oz bottle of Diamond Glaze
    amzn.to/3zmMLR1
8 oz bottle of Diamond Glaze
    amzn.to/3zpiMbm
Heat gun- I use mine to quickly dry paint, soften the glue to dismantle furniture and quickly cure polymer clay without an oven. Gets a lot hotter than a hair dryer.
    amzn.to/3YBAIcH
Craft heat gun that doesn't get as hot as mine
    amzn.to/3ZZ5wWe
I have lots of projects planned ranging from scratch made accessories, abandoned miniatures, furniture makeovers, accessories, kits and Dollhouse Miniatures in multiple scales. I'm also working on a large Harry Potter build in 1" scale.

I save the plastic mixture cups you get with Calpol or cough mixture and cover them either with wood slats, or cheat and use EVA foam, then paint and secure the slats with twine and voila! You have an ancient looking bucket! (EVA is easier to cut and when painted you cant tell the difference!).

Between you and Bentley House Minis I have finally gotten brave enough to dip my toes into making some minis and I love how much you just go for it and if something goes wrong you just either make it work anyway or change something and get something great anyway. It's nice to see that mistakes aren't always disastrous. Thank you for the inspiration and motivation!

    • @queencityminis

That's great that you're making minis! I used to be a lot more uptight about making Miniatures until I started watching Little Gretchen's Workshop. If she makes mistakes, she just keeps going and everything looks good in the end. Worst case scenario, you either redo it or hide it behind other Miniatures that turned out better LOL

I envisage this piece in a colonial house in New England. You are really a carpenter who does work in miniature, it's just outstanding as usual. When you were cutting the bricks at 4:02 I was thinking if they are supposed to be just the side view of the bricks then the grout won't look right, but of course you ended up painting with red. Your details are immaculate.

You will get interesting effects if you allow the acrylic paint to almost completely dry, then splatter with alcohol and let it sit for a few minutes (but don't let the alcohol dry). Then either dab with a paper towel or you can scrape over the surface with a credit card. For the mirror effect, I think dabbing would be better. I love this technique when I'm painting on canvas or painting collage papers. The trick is to let the base layer of acrylic almost completely dry.

I love this method of making miniature mirrors look old. 😍 I'm making a diorama and it doesn't have a window, so I'm going to put a fake mirror behind a window frame and cover it with a curtain that will hang down to the floor. Do you think I should use the same method you demonstrated here to cover my mirror/window?? I want to make it look more realistic and I thought I could leave a little bit of the mirror uncovered to reflect some light into the room box, especially if I aged the window. Thanks so much for all your help. Cheers from Amanda in Australia.

Where do you get Diamond Glaze? I looked at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby to no avail. I wonder if this would be a good glue to use to glue in clear packaging to windows in order to not get other types of glue seepage. I did buy some Aileen’s Ultimate Glue from Michael’s and am going to do a test run with that. I’m going to make a brick wall for my Addams Family-type tower and will use your Spackle/glue idea for the mortar. I may leave the mortar extruded for a more rustic look. This was very useful to me.
