Restoring A Split Painting : Ex Multis Ad Unum - Binaural ASMR(ish)

  • When a painting is catastrophically damaged often the assumed choice is whether or not to save the piece. For the conservator it is not a question of if or can the painting should be saved, rather it's how to save it.
In this video Julian Baumgartner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago shares how a painting of Mary that had been split into four pieces is fully conserved and restored. Using both traditional and modern approaches, archival and fully reversible materials, slowly but surely the piece is saved. All of the work is stable and can be removed in the future if ever so desired.
One of the challenges that the conservator often faces is before being able to embark upon the work of restoring the painting the old conservation attempts and materials must first be addressed. That is, before the "do" comes a lot of "undo." Unknown materials and motives can be frustrating and difficult to address yet with experience and resources these can be overcome.
This video was shot in 4k 60fps and with binaural microphones providing an immersive visual and audio experience. As such it's best experienced with headphones.

Hey guys and gals, first off sorry it took so long to get this one out; my move consumed my time and energy more than I expected (of course!). Second, there are a few spots in the video where the binaural microphones failed and the sound reverts to flat stereo... sorry about that. Finally, if you have questions, post them in the comments and I'll keep an eye out and in a week or two I'll try to answer them in a narrated version.

I learned one important thing when I was doing automotive restoration: When you're dealing with preserving really old pieces, there is no "quick way" to do it. It requires careful planning and research, a delicate hand, and a lot of patience. As frustrating as it can be at times, the results are usually well-worth the effort. My biggest struggle is the patience aspect. I feed off of results and it can often feel like a futile effort when you are moving at such a slow pace, but when you finally have a chance to take a step back and check your progress, you once again realize why you are doing it in the first place.
    Thanks for the excellent videos.

I find that too many ASMRtists have ‘goalless’ videos, where the sounds are just manufactured because they sound good, but with your videos, the sounds are a result of specific important progress being made.
