Everybody loves a big painting, in fact one of my professors once said that "big isn't better, it's just better." And he meant that even if the painting is banal and about something uninteresting like shoe laces, if it's big it commands attention and must be reckoned with.
Luckily this big painting isn't boring or banal, but it is big. And as any painting gets larger the complexity of a conservation does as well. From the duration any one procedure takes, to the equipment required to treat the painting and even little things like handling become obstacles that must be overcome.
Thus far most of the videos address smaller works that never face these challenges. I wanted to take the opportunity to show how a conservation changes as the scale does.

I always thought these painters just had a thing for dark, desaturated and depressing colors. Turns out, it's grime.

Same! When I went to Italy 5 years ago, I've visited some important cathedral that had various artworks displayed and I was stunned by all the colours! The paintings were so lush that it almost made me felt like a sinner. I was thoroughly shocked.

Sometimes I get emotional thinking about that original artist who, unknown to them, will have their work be so lovingly treated and whose original vision will be so faithfully followed. As a student training to be a research scientist, part of my job someday will be to leave behind research and data for the next generation to build upon. I can only hope that my own legacy will be treated with such care, and watching Julian work on these paintings has influenced the respect with which I treat my predecessors in my own field. Both art and science are conversations that span centuries, and if you know how to listen, even long-gone masters can have a whole lot to say.

Hey gang, just wanted to answer some of the questions I see popping up repeatedly.
-What I mean when I said "big isn't better, it's just better" Basically, even if the artwork one's making ins't great or interesting, if it's massive it will a a minimum, command attention and be a force that must be reckoned with. If it's small it can easily be dismissed. I think it was a trap laid by my professor because the following week everyone came in with massive drawings that were no better than the small ones. ;)
    -Biggest painting I've worked on that wasn't a mural: 15' x 45'
-Music in the background: probably Motown, early soul blues, or dub reggae... Or NPR when I feel like I need to feed my brain.
-Yes, between that last scraping painting and this one I was close to the edge... ;)
-How long did this actually take: Start to finish it was about 7 weeks. But of course I didn't only work on this one painting... there were days when all I did was work on this painting and other days where I didn't do much on it at all.

I was helping my uncle who is an electricion
He was doing this technic to hold big nails
      He accidentally swollen around 4
And my uncle grew up in a farm so he refused to go to the hospital
So he decided to eat as mush as possible
So they could get out naturally and he had around one week of pain from nails that damaged his stomach
So my family convinced him to go to hospital then he had to go get surgery
So yeah it is painful lol

There was one time that one of his videos got to the front page of reddit and the top comment was someone claiming to be an expert conservator and criticizing his work super harshly and unfairly. It was obvious that they'd never actually watched or listened to any of his videos because a lot of what they criticized were things that he explains in almost every video.
