If in the future someone doesn’t like your retouching I’m throwing fists
Alejandro Ghysbrecht
If they don’t like it, they’ll still like the fact that it’s easy to reverse.
So anyway, I started blasting
I ve seen his work published on facebook and people were just shiting was n him
only a fool who doesn't like his retouching.
It’s kinda neat how his retouching is also a conversation with people who lived long ago as well those in the future who do not yet exist.
Lol the sound of disgust in his voice when talking about the unnecessary overfilling to disguise a mistake 😂
we’re all so invested in this man and his paintings
No, no, this IS what we wanted, Julian.
RUclips: You are now interested in the restoration of 17th century paintings.
Me: "But I just-"
RUclips: Sssshhh
I cannot even begin to describe how true this is. I’ve been addicted to these for weeks. I have serious problem.
I’m vibin tho.
@@lewisacevedo5914 same...I watched others...not the same
RUclips knows what's best for you. Just do what RUclips says.
Glad it's not just me.
The closest thing I can think of that would relate to this is one video I watched about the first camera
"No! don't touch the painting!"
Julien : haha finger prints go tssststss
me: not thinking and saying anything
Julian: NO not that Salvador Mundi
LOL
“But not so much moisture that it’s like a noodle”
omg right
So we're shooting for not quite Al dente got it

I bet any future conservators are really gonna appreciate that you document so much of your work online. I'm sure you'd be thrilled to have something so clear to reference for stuff like this.
It's also helpful to know what was done to this painting. But, don't they all have a conservation file? I mean every artwork should have its documentation...
I expected him to say POLYURETHANE when he said “I’m going to use a material you wouldn’t expect me to”
Jackie Chow he would NEVER omg
the heresy...
I thought he was going to say uranium because I wouldn't expect him to use that
SAME LMAO
DO NOT SAY THAT EVIL WORD!!
Julian-“More clamps is more better.”
Me, exhausted after a long day of exams: *wow, dem sum gud werd usage*
Dude, I JUST got done with my AP calc exam, so I appreciate this. Also, when I saw you posted this literally a day ago, I suddenly realized we might actually be in the same boat, so that's neat. Idk. I'm very tired.
Yep yep. Less words, brain tired
Same. Finals are killer. Especially for people with a severe anxiety disorder (me)
Y'all are fortunate, having them done already. I have mine just coming up, starting Tuesday.
@@flowerdolphin5648 ouch
tbh for a 300~ year old painting i feel like it looked pretty damn good to start with
“Slowly drip down into that crack”

Juicy
I think Julian's videos are helping me restore my innocence... i didn't get it
Michael Scott: *”Thats what she said!”*
😆❤️
I love how nobody here has any idea what he’s talking about yet we all still watch these videos
I mean, the way he explains everything is pretty clear to understand most of his work and reasons why he used this and not other method
Łucja Uhlenberg the more I watch the more I understand!
You’re just stupid, cuh.
yeah and if you watch his other videos you start learning
He could throw the painting out the window and I would think he is just using a "new" kind of method
It's fun to watch this video after his recent series "Wood That It Were So Simple". Imagine if he had his clamping table set up when he conserved this painting...
Baumgatner: *Doesnt clean the painting and starts applying Hide Glue*
Me: Had us in the first half ngl
His art restoration is like a performance. He deserves a round of applause after every art piece that he restores.
Quarantine is giving me new points of interest, now aside of pc hardware, gaming and electronics, I love old paintings and fine art restoration... Really unsuspected but not disappointed
"No, not that one, I wish!"
By the way, would you like to work with a painting like *that* Salvator Mundi or just too much pressure?
That's always the big question: would you want to work on the Mona Lisa? Because nobody wants to be the guy who screwed up the Mona Lisa!
@@CallieMasters5000 Oh I can't even imagine anyone touching up Mona Lisa. I saw her in Louvre and it's crazy how they protect her. Understandable of course.
Callie Masters Julian would never screw up the Mona Lisa or any painting
Doc T It probably is more famous thanks to the artist but it’s still a really good painting
@@CallieMasters5000 Well the Mona Lisa was restored in 1809 by Jean-Marie Hooghstoel who was a bit over ambitious and removed the topmost layer of paint by using a bit too agressive cleaning. This has not been fixed, because it would mean you had to repaint the Mona Lisa.
bro I had that exact greenhouse! it was awful!!!!! it got knocked over in the wind so many times!!!!!!!!!!! good on you for not using it for its intended purposes!
@@spygulturtle2322 the picture on the box was of it outside, although i have to admit i didnt check because i didnt think there were greenhouses meant to be used indoors. its really flimsy but it also has stakes to try to anchor it to the ground. the winds where i live are strong enough to blow a trampoline that's chained to a swingset away, so many things act like sails and fall apart at the weak points. the trampoline's leg came off cuz the wind was so strong. but mostly it was a shitty greenhouse in the first place.
I love how genuine yet passive-agressive sounding that 'good on you for not using it for its intended purpose!' Was 😂
“And now, with the panel stable and unified, I can begin the cleaning process” Oooh my favorite part, let us resupply the tortilla stack
Julian: says literally anything
Me: ah yes, of course
Julian: more clamps is more better
me: ʸᵉˢ
I can't get over how this painting is about 500 years old and still in viewable condition but this whole endeavor is "Well, THAT was shortsighted, but if we fix their mistakes, we should be good to go"... like... how long is this painting gonna last? But of course that's what's so cool about your work.
Although, isn't it possible that many more people will see this painting via your RUclips video than have ever seen it in person, combined? Imagine trying to convey what's happening now to the artist--trying to describe how huge an audience would be poring over the tiniest details of their work a half-millennium later.
This comment and the ideas in it are strangely beautiful
I feel like you've thought a lot about this
How would the artist feel about having an expert taking incredible amounts of care to preserve his art? How would he feel knowing millions were watching and appreciating that the painting would now last for centuries to come? It kind of makes me teary thinking about it ;u;
I was so mesmerized in seeing and learning about this restoration process that I ended up watching most of this video before even realizing that it's over 40 minutes long lol
"hey baumgartner, why'd you put linen on the foam?"
"It's for the ✨ aesthetic ✨"
Us: Why did you put black cloth over the foam?
Baumgartner: a e s t h e t i c s
Julian: ... "By just building up a layer of fillingmaterial to try to smooth out that ridge, which is absolutely crazy!"
Me, while doing a facemask at 3AM: "Absolutely crazy :O"
The removing of the surface grime is always my favorite part
Mine too, and when he does scraping
something I love about this is that if someone wants to restore it again in the future, they can check this video and see exactly what you did
Would be perfect to add a micro SD wrapped in plastic to the backside

Who are you and what have you done with Mr. Baumgartner Restoration
I can hear the pain in his voice while he's using the hide glue.
THE NERVE that last conservator had to use that much filling medium
What the hell wrong with that guy? I bet he doesn't even use steel tacks.
