    Very interesting journey.
    What struck me most was the negative feelings when comparing yourself to others in your class, like the saying goes "comparison is the thief of joy".
    I guess maybe it was a good thing how I started to learn programming 25 years ago when it was just me as a kid by myself in my room trying to get things to work. There was no one around me so no one to compare myself to, I just did a ton of trial an error until it worked.
    That gladiator game looks really cool, great job!

      Wow, hey! I appreciate the kind words - it was definitely a hard time seeing everyone around me do so well and I felt like I was falling behind, but everyone starts somewhere!
      Appreciate the words on Colosseum too! Might be nice to touch up on it again in the future and properly release it, although Multiplayer Networking is so intimidating hahaha
      Thanks again!

    I can sympathies a lot with the high school to the rest of the world transition. I hated the format in highschool and barely passed in spite of achieving a lot in technical fields like automotive and becoming an Eagle Scout. The whole if you score a fish on how well it can clime a tree thing.

    I'm 16 and as a hobby I'm developing games. I made a bunch of small projects (all 2D with Unity). This video is very inspiring! I really hope that I'll reach a good point so I will continue my hobby until that time! I also started with tutorials but I tried to twist them and now I understand what I code and I can do it independently!

      Amazing! This is the perfect steps you should be taking - and honestly, as long as you have the passion for it, you can do anything :)

    this feels so relatable in my current difficulty to have an honest to myself attempt at learning game development.

    the journey of a programmer: study -> study -> "wow, this is pretty cool" -> study -> study -> study -> "i know nothing, im dumb and a disgrace for my family" -> study -> study -> study -> "Im a fucking genius" -> study -> study -> study-> "ok im dumb" ...

    • @GarnetKane
      @GarnetKane  3 дня назад +1

      The sobering realisation of just accepting that I'm always gonna be dumb hahahaha, but it's the best feeling because there's that drive to always get better too!

    This gives me a lot of confidence as im only around 7 months into my game dev journey and made an active decision to avoid all tutorials along the way using documentation and watching videos about the architecture of different systems. Similar to your final uni project I have a fully functioning server based multiplayer game similar to worms 3D I made and designed on my own that I play with my friends fairly often :), about to start looking for jobs myself

    I suffer from adhd inattention, watching classes or following a tutorial is a pain to me, but once I know the basics is the opposite, I become completely addicted in the subject, I'm in the first steps on combat, that's why I procrastinating watching videos. But is cool to know the struggles of other developers.

    • @GarnetKane
      @GarnetKane  4 месяца назад

      I do exactly the same thing with procrastinating - but I always find watching videos is super motivating seeing what other people are creating and it gets me back in the mood and gives me some ideas on what i can create!
      Good luck on your journey! Shoot me a message anytime :)

    Have you been involved in the making of this game "We Who Are About To Die"? Because it looks just like your gladiator game and the guy became a millionaire with it.

      Ooh, that’s the dream. Nah we weren’t apart of it - but games like that actually gave us heaps of inspiration in making it. Maybe we can do it again and become millionaires haha

      @@GarnetKane Played one recently and it felt completely soules. I guess a lot of big games are getting that way. The great pashion games of the early 2000 are a thing of the past. Perhaps the indi games will start filling the void.

    • @GarnetKane
      @GarnetKane  5 месяцев назад +1

      I honestly wouldn’t be mad if that were the case, but i agree. games definitely lacking some charm at the moment; I would love to see indies take over :)

      @@GarnetKane I do think that there is a movement away from AAA games it is slow but happening. The biggest issue is that AAA have so much marketing that they can alway pull something. But perhaps over the next ten years since Game Dev is so much easier now people who are passionet will start releasing larger and larger games with less and less budget and rival the big names out there.
