    Your story is so similar to my current story. I started coding/game dev 4 years ago during high school. First year I learned the basics of C#, not even touching methods and classes. 2 and 3 year was just copying tutorial after tutorial to create games for some classes. Then I took a year off, a break if you will, after high school. Not doing anything, forgetting about everything I had "learned". And now I am in University, but I feel like nothing have changed. We are doing the exact same thing you did. We are supposed to create X games in MonoGame with X requirements of functionality the game should have. Then we work all alone, and then present our game every 3 weeks. They haven't really taught me anything so far, I am almost finished with the first term and I feel so bad. I applied to University to learn new stuff, but all they are doing is tell us to read a book(That I have already read). I know the basics of C#. I know a lot of syntax. But the problem is that I don't know how to use that knowledge to create things. I know about methods, classes, dictionaries, events, Design patterns, etc... but I don't know how to use it to create things, and they are not teaching us how to use it. I know how loops, methods and variables work. But I can't create inventories or save system. I am forced to use tutorials or ChatGPT to solve many programming problems I have when I create X games they want us to make, and it makes me feel so bad. I have tried for so long to learn this stuff, but I am still a beginner. I can't create amazing systems, I don't know how to connect it all together. I can't see the end of the tunnel anymore, the light disappeared a long time ago. I hope I will come out some day like you did, thanks for sharing your video!

I feel like the movement is way too robotic and clunky, like when the AI will move (in nodes: up-right-up to walk diagonal). Could you make a tutorial for smoothing out the movement of such an AI, or point me in a direction of where i might find the solution? Cheers on the good work!

    • @GarnetKane

      Hey! I can't speak for gdscript completely, but unreal engine is definitely a good option, the problem that I faced however, and a lot of beginners will too, is just general navigation of the interface. UE can be a pretty overwhelming introduction to game development, but if you can get past that then its definitely a great option, especially because of blueprints.

    Hmm it would be interesting to know how you approach tutorials from people who are so experienced that the way their code works is already (close to) optimal. Usually when I try to get into a topic, I watch tutorials and try to refactor their work into how I would code it. That usually is a pretty good way for me to understand how things work. But for some guys (eg. git amend) their is just nothing where I see improvement and just copying it feels wrong even tho I understand it. Any tips on how to approve such tutorials? Maybe I‘m doing something wrong on a fundamental level

    • @GarnetKane
      @GarnetKane 25 дней назад

      Oooh great suggestion. Looking at code and seeing how to make it more optimal is a good approach - but as you said, sometimes you can't find more ways to do it. I think what helped me best, even if you copy from a tutorial pretty raw, is just thinking or looking how to expand it in your own way. I did a tutorial recently for an Inventory System in Unity - super simple, but even with something like that, find ways to expand on it. Auto stacking for example, or auto organising. I think it's just thinking of ways of how you can use the existing code and expand on it!

    • @GTZ-98
      @GTZ-98 24 дня назад

      @@GarnetKane Great idea. Thanks man! :) Honestly sometimes you don‘t have to reinvent the wheel. „Copying“ and adding to a tutorial is totally fine I guess if you can expand it and really understood the overall process why things are built the way they are.

      Hello! I can't see why it wouldn't be possible - I know India has a lot of mobile gaming studios, and if your goal is to start your own company, then computer science will give you fundamental knowledge for it. There's plenty of remote roles to start off with as well, so definitely get some experience from there before hand!

Now I need to implement roads building system with corners and crossroads. My previous project was snake game and it had corners when changing directions, so I believe it will help me a lot. And this is coming from a guy who has recently finished a three-hour criticism of Starfield, and that was before a one-hour critique of Starfield. It's not a matter of me needing hyper-fast editing. I watch DevDuck, so. I think I make my case there. We just need more concision, I think. And I know all about meandering. Just watch any of the awful videos I made on my channel. Twenty-four hours' worth of editing to make mediocrity. That's gotta be like some kind'a lame-o record.

    Hey Garnet, good stuff man really liked the video, Would you recommend me specializing in a field I truly like? or is it better to have a variety of skills?

      Hey! Definitely explore your skill sets, but definitely nurture your strengths. if you’re a good programmer, being good with UI/UX for example is always beneficial. Along with the technical growth, just other fields that you want to have a crack in is always worth pursuing - you never know too, you might find that you enjoy art/3d modeling way more!

    Can you tell the best game dev colleges in australia

    • @GarnetKane
      @GarnetKane Месяц назад

      Hey! That's a good question - and kind of a tough one to reaaaaallly answer, a lot of different institutes provide difference experiences/opportunities. I went to UTS and loved my experience there - but I found a lot of the work was very self reliant and you do have to push yourself to learn more and stand out etc. AIE is another great choice, but I think it might be slightly more expensive there. That said though, the projects there seem to be a much higher quality than other unis/colleges that I have seen. Swinburne is good too, and Macquarie Uni as well. Those are the ones that I know of that have some form of Game Dev tied into it, I know there's a few others (Maybe Western Sydney, RMIT, Deakin or UOW), but I haven't heard too much about them so I can't say how good they are

      Hey! Very valid question and it's extremely common to get confused/overwhelmed. I think if you're sort of just starting out, scope a lot smaller. It's easy to get carried away and to want to jump into developing your dream game, but it's your dream game for a reason and my personal belief on it is that you should start that project when you're ready. If you've just started game development, learn smaller projects, experiment with different concepts, and prototype. You'll learn from these small, easily achievable/completable projects that you'll be picking up an array of skills that you can take into your next project. With a project like your 'dream game', which a lot of people have, and I do too, ultimately you want to do right by the development of that game. You want the art to be good, you want the code to be good etc. so you should do that when you're at a point in your development career that you're able to handle it without getting burnt out/overwhelmed If you have more questions, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer! Thank you :)

    From my own experience, i think you can definitely fall on the opposite rabbit hole of over designing and under developing your game, but of course it's nice to be prepared. I think the key necessity is not trying to make your systems fit every possible use case, be perfect, if you don't even know every use case. I personally find it easier to make a simple hard coded gun, and 6 months later if the game needs 3 guns I can make an abstraction, then 6 months later if the game would be better with weapon mods, I can implement those with a more broad system from scratch... than trying to make the gun be super modular and have a gazillion stats I don't know if I'm gonna use or scrap. Of course, if the GDD says you can have 16 different guns I better reuse some code, but if it doesn't say anything, why am I trying to make a system that accepts a thousand guns... For the game 12 months in to have a single pistol and shotgun? My approach is a mixture of planning and practicality. This approach allows me to have prototypes sooner so I can judge the current state of the GDD, and if any changes need to be made. If I make the choices after I make the systems, then I'll throw the systems away. So instead of making all the choices then all the systems, I make tiny choices and tiny systems and iterate, and my scope cuts me off when needed. Again, that's my perspective from my own dev journey so far.
