80% of a Garmin 840 for one third of the price (Review of the Magene C606)

- Cycling headunits are an interesting topic. They really only have one job, which is to sit on your bike and relay data and information to you as the rider. Their price can often be quite high, with some models costing more than an iPhone. So is this price justifyable, and what if a competitor offered a similar product but for a fraction of the price.
In this video I offer a quick fire review of the Magene C606 as well as some accompanying accessories which Magene sent to me. This video is not sponsored by Magene, they sent me these items with no obligation to give them a positive review, these are my honest thoughts.

CORRECTION: the Garmin 840 and 1040 has brought in USB-C
For some reason I thought it wasnt implemented yet.
I love your video review but unfortunately this error discredits your comparison of the Magene to the 840 (as alluded to in your title) as it shows you have never actually used the 840 at all…
I have the Magene radar and your review of this computer is pretty much spot on. I got the radar for a 3rd of the price of a Garmin radar, it sort of works and is full of bugs.
Magene does not seem to have the best track record when it comes to electronics.
There hasn't been a firmware update for my radar since last year so I don't expect Magene to provide any long term support for their computers.
I think for things we don't rely on for safety its more acceptable to use budget products. But if something may have a direct impact on our wellbeing then perhaps better to just spend the money.
I bumped into the world of Magene in 2020 when I bought their speed/cadence sensors, which I then paired with XOSS. When my bike was stolen, I bought Magene Speed/Cadence sensors, HRM and C406. I never had any issues with any of them. I always need to replace the batteries in S/C sensors like every 8 - 9 months (CR2032). I replace the battery in the HRM after about 5 - 6 months. Now with my SRAM QUARQ, I don't use the Magene's cadence sensor anymore. Upon moving to the US from Downunder, the bikkies where totally unfamiliar with this brand that has served me faithfully for nearly 3 years and for close to 2,500 miles/ 4km. I'm in the market for C606 just to add turn-by-turn navigation to my ride instead of relying on maps prompts over earphones.
Thanks for the great review. I miss 'Straya 😻!!
Great review Josh! Im after a budget Head unit and you may have sold me on this. Keep up the good work
Great to hear you got some value from this review. Thanks for the nice comment :)
I bought the Magene L508 radar tail light. It’s a game changer. Will never ride without it now. I use it with Wahoo element bolt v1.
That’s great to hear. Seems like magene make some decent accessories which are cheaper than the main brands.
@@joshkwan I have this radar tail light as well. My wife bought it for me and I originally wanted the Garmin one. I was skeptical but it has been wonderful. Works well when I turn off radar while bunch riding and many have commented that they love the deceleration warning it gives like the unit featured in your video.
Magene overall good - had a problem with a sticky button on a C406 but very happy with their PES505 power meter (every bit as accurate as my Assioma pedals which are on a different bike) and have a couple of their chest HRMs too.
With these kinds of cheaper products I’m usually quite skeptical of their quality. So I was pleasantly surprised the magene products exceeded my expectations.
Love my Garmin 840. About navigating with the computer. It dose what I. Need it to do. I like to explore when riding and may not know exactly where I am heading ahead of time. I was trying to find a bike so that would pull what I get from the garmin edge 840. However never could find the right match between function and ease of use while riding. I did a 23 mile ride that I would have missed completing correctly with out the navigation support.
Does it have climbing feature? Which is very important for long distance rider.
Good honest review bro, sold my edge 520 plus and got this. You are right once in one eco system is a pain to switch..lol but it's ok I still have 165 to do that. So garmin is private magene public 😂🤣
I did my 1st ride today with it, love it with l508 radar and cardio. Amazing toy for the price
Good stuff mate. Glad to hear
Does it display left-right power or at least record it.
Hey mate, this might be dependent on your power meter. From what I can see it doesn’t show individual power for each foot.
The heartrate monitor can be worn on the bicep as well I believe. Mine can.
Hey josh, can the c606 change to the "climb" mode just before each climb where it tells you distance, gradient etc by default?
I don’t think the magene has a climb pro feature. I could be wrong since I didn’t look for it, but didn’t see the option. Quick google says this is currently not a feature.
@@joshkwan Thanks Josh!
Hi, I may have missed it on the video but is it possible to download/ sync recent outdoor rides for simulated indoor workouts similar to garmin? Is it also possible to control a trainer via erg mode? Thanks!
Hey mate, sorry never even knew this was a feature on the Garmin, so never tested it to see.
@@joshkwan Thanks! Just found most answers over at Magene offical channel's video about this. The erg mode though is not clear yet. Thanks again.
Hello, I'm thinking of buying a C606, but I already have cadence and speed sensors built into my bike (Bontrager/Trek) and a Garmin Varia RTL 515 radar. Will the C606 recognize and pair with my sensors? Thanks in advance.
There shouldn’t be any issue. When I used the C606 I was pairing lots of sensors from other brands to it without any issue.
For example: power meter from Assioma, HR sensor from Garmin etc
@@joshkwan Great, thanks for your reply, I'm going to order one. Have a nice day!
About the navigation page , on left below is shown by speed , can it be replace by power ?
I have the powermeter so far works good.
Does it display left and right power? That is the only thing I wish my Garmin 130 could do.
As far as I can see on the app it can show you your balance as well as torque effectiveness for each leg, which is displayed as a percentage, not as a raw watts number.
i bought c606, the problem i am getting are the delay measurement of gradient and elevation gain seems incorrect
So, does Magene require pairing with phone to work properly? or does it work fine without pairing?
Must be paired with a phone, so you can set up all your data screens. Once you’ve done that it can run independently.
Does it possible to turn of the computer during the trip? and after rusume the trip after turn on?
Lacking 20% of the essentials would be unacceptable for me. Looks like a lot of reviewers got paid to promote a halve baked China product.
At 160usd it's not cheap. Is there the climb feature that Garmin has? For that money I'd probably get a 530 second hand, it's the one I have. If you sweat or wear gloves, or if it rains, the touch screen doesn't work, so you have buttons, it's now cheap, and it does everything. The Garmin training advisor stuff is also something magene clearly doesn't have.
Fair point, Garmin is backed by alot of training related software.
Awesome, a rider review. Is there an update video? Final thoughts?
Tbh I’m pretty stuck in the Garmin ecosystem. Probably won’t be doing any further review. Happy to chat about it if you have further questions though.
@@joshkwan So you dont really recommand the magene c606?
I like your sunglasses🎉 where are they from?
Oakley Clifton’s. However I wouldn’t recommend riding with the side visors on since it blocks peripheral vision. Luckily they can be easily removed.
Good review Josh. I replaced my dead Garmin Radar unit with the Magene. Worked perfectly with a Wahoo ELEMNT Roam until I smashed the Wahoo. So instead of shelling out $AUD600 on a new one I bought the Magene C406 Pro for $AUD120. Works perfectly for my needs. I want radar, heart rate, navigation, elevation, load to Strava and it does all that. The screen resolution is basic and black and white but ok. Navigation as you said a bit clunky but works. I do miss the screen sharpness of the Wahoo but there are other things I can spend $500 on so quite happy with it.
Thanks for the comment. People can be quite critical of missing features which are available in more expensive headunits, but at the end of the day if you’re never going to use those features why pay for them.
@@joshkwan yes for sure. Btw love your channel. I’m in Sydney too so it gives me good ideas for rides.
Thank you mate. If we cross paths come and say hi!
Can we talk about the tan line with a HR monitor on your arm.
Hahahahaha it ain’t good for business.
Adding to the already bad tan lines from the bibs
I'm worry seeing you holding camera with one hand on a bike. One bumpy road and voila. Stay safe dude
Hey mate, Garmin 840/1040 are USB C.
Thanks mate. Need to add an update to the video to say that. Someone told me they’re still Micro USB so apologies for that.
Let us know how long before the Magene stuff croaks. Their speed sensors are crap. Strictly Garmin for me.
Sadly I’ve heard similar experiences for other people’s sensors. Seems like you get what you pay for.
how do you claim the battery is that good? someone else said he could barely get 10 hours out of it
It’s all anecdotal mate. Another’s experience may differ. Only way to know for sure would be to buy 100 of them and test them all.
I reckon using a head unit for 2 weeks and still having 40% battery is pretty good.
Affiliate links?
No affiliate links, they only sent me the products to review.
No one seems to know huawei band can broadcast hr data live into your bike computer though😅
light looks too small. that's not going to do anything in daylight or dusk
It’s surprisingly quite bright. But yes, some lights in the market have more lumens, or focus the light more intensely
Navigation is a deal break it has to be good
You actually need instructions on where to go to ride your bike?
@@donwinston yeah, when I’m in a new place or want directions… tell me you’re being sarcastic
How about 100% the price of the best product and 100% the performance?
Why cheap out if you’re going to spend for a luxury item in a luxury hobby?
That’s fair enough, and I know most people are willing to spend the money. But plenty of people are on a budget or trying to find ways to save money.
Head units aren't only for people with $5,000 bikes; there are people (kids included) with a $500 used bike who could use a head unit.
garmin 840 has a usb C port
Looks like I’m misinformed. Thanks for letting me know.
One less cable type in my drawer!
Mate what are those sunnies 😂
Next in fashion I'm told
@@joshkwanI'll remember where I saw it first

Better do my vocal warm ups next time 😂
I don't get why companies try to put navigation in all of their products. Almost every cyclist knows where they are riding their bike. I just want heart rate, left and right power, performance numbers, climbing aids, workout monitoring, and Strava uploads.
true, you are the centre of the universe
@@beybladeking2772 I'm no different than 95% of cyclists who don't need help figuring out where to go when riding their bike. If you ride your bike in an unfamiliar place you can always use your frigging phone. Almost everyone brings their phone anyway.
I tried the map thing on my computer once. Quickly took out my phone and used Google maps to guide me to the right location. Google maps are so much better and easier.
If navigation is put on the headunit it needs to be high quality otherwise it’s useless potentially dangerous.
Probably 90% of people I ride with don’t use navigation, but some people like to have the route loaded if they’re doing it for the first time, or they’re not confident in their memory. So it’s a feature some people do use, and look for in a headunit.
@@joshkwan 100%
most likely this guy is paid by Magene as part of their marketing campaigns which was also launched back in China, but any serious cyclist should not choose this head unit, yes on paper this unit can do what garmin edge 840 does, but when functions as a combined system, at maximum it has 1/3 of the garmin's function for 1/3 of the price, many bugs, malfunctions, design flaws have been reported in China which has 10x the users of this unit, and the consensus is, choose Garmin whenever you can.
Go start a review site of your own since you’re so well informed.
great and fair review. 🫡
