I have NEVER seen anyone do this route before. 120km Ferry loop in Sydneys South

  • What an adventure this was. I have cycled in Sydney for years and never done this route, or even see anyone do it on Strava. I cooked up the plan for this route a while ago but decided to give it a crack on the long weekend with a small group. We had the most awesome time. Scenic views, a cotton candy sunrise and smooth descents along the Sydney Coastline.
    I had a tonne of fun on this ride as well as making this video so hope you enjoy.

    Thanks for watching this video guys, if you have another route around Sydney you reckon I need to check out, why not tell me in the comments!
    Hope you enjoy watching the video as much as I had making it! :)

      Thanks for this, Josh Kwan! Really interesting for an old bikie, despite my tendency to fall asleep. Anyway, I don't know how far north of the Harbour Bridge you are but here's a different route that would incorporate the same ferry ride. Head south to the turn-off to Bald Hill, which over looks Stanwell Park. Enjoy the view there for a while (as well as the last couple of downhill kays) then head north through the Royal National Park to - you guessed it - Bundeena, where the rest of the ride is pretty much the same as this one you enjoyed so much. Arrivederci!

    Hey Josh, we have been doing the ferry at Bundeena for years from Lane Cove. Our difference is we normally go down to Waterfall and drop drop into RNP then back to Bundeena. Makes for a good loop

    Great video! I left Sydney 10 years ago after mostly just doing mostly Akuna/West head and now a bit more inspired after seeing your videos since I'm moving back soon (Crow's nest too!) It seems Sydney cycling has improved a little bit too. Hopefully I'll join one of your rides one day! Thanks for the vids

      Crowsnest is an awesome spot to do all the north rides. Getting south can be a bit tricky without a group.

    If you want a slightly longer ride head up to Waterfall on the Pacific Hwy (very safe) then down into Waterfall and back via Sir Bertram Steven’s Drive in the RNP where you can head back via Bundeena. This is a great local ride, very scenic in RNP but it might add another 40km to the distance unless you drop the Cape Sol bit.

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks thats a great tip. The fact that this route piggy backs off RNP means theres a few little additions you can make to the route to make it even more fun :)

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  4 месяца назад

      It is a bit sketchy but I’ve done it so many times maybe I’m desensitised to it. If you’re with a big group it’s fine, plenty of people do it every weekend.
      I’ve taken the bike path around the airport a long time ago, I think it’s improved heaps recently.

    Man, I am an amateur rider living in the upper north shore. Riding the Old Pac pretty much every day, and I reckon those steep hills are a great starting point to shape a rider into something remarkable. As a motorist, I always hated Sydney's twisting and hilly roads, but as a cyclist, I immensely enjoy it.

    I am so jealous, I have never done 100k in my life and now I tend to ride alone. Though I am working on that second issue. But it was fun to watch this ride and id the sections of the trip with only Bandina & Cape Solander being areas I have never been. Riding through that tunnel under the airport runway required some cojónes I think due to Sydney traffic being so aggressive and intolerant of cyclists and there being no actual cycle lane.

    Nice scenic ride! What website or service do you use when planning a ride like this? Where do you normally go to search for new routes?
    Congrats on 3k! You should celebrate by buying another pair of sunnies... don't think you have enough yet!
    also, great music choices! Really sets the feel for the whole video.

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  4 месяца назад

      I either use Strava or Garmin connect. Garmin connect is free and does a pretty good job so if you’re looking for a budget option defs use that.
      I follow a fair few people on Strava and usually ‘borrow’ their route if I see a good one.
      Haha, I have a drawer of sunnies, I cannot fit anymore in there. It’s overflowing.
      I appreciate that comment, funnily enough sometimes I spend longer picking the music for the video than the actual editing of it.

    • @veryboringname.
      @veryboringname. 4 месяца назад +1

      @@joshkwanGreat, I use Garmin Connect and it's been good so far. I've only plotted simple routes though... I go back and forth between that and Google Maps for street view to determine if a climb will kill me!
      Haha yes I saw that drawer under your helmet showroom!
      I find music really important... when doing my little holiday videos I usually pick the music before the trip and shoot to it. Sometimes it doesn't work so I have a backup song. I'm quite sure it was your music choice in your early videos that got me following your vids!

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  4 месяца назад +2

      I reckon the easiest is to find a local cycling club and steal their routes off Strava haha.
      It’s hard to describe but music really sets the tone and the pacing of a video. For example I find that if the music is too fast then it makes the riding look too slow and boring. Haha
      anyway, finding that perfect song feels amazing
