It's so hard when you've been living an inch from a pretender for years. Denial does set in and you forget about the times you've accidentally seen them with their mask off. They gaslight, lie, or trauma bond to make you forget. I saw strange and awful things from one of my relatives from my toddler years well into my adult years. I saw red flags everywhere, but was I constantly guilted into believing I was paranoid. Then one day I woke up and knew I was dealing with a psychopathic relative. It hurt so badly, because I didn't even know who they were at all. I tried to spend less time with this person, but that only alerted them that I knew and was trying to escape. This person never wore a mask with me again. They stalked me, screamed at me, made up horrible stories about me, left me disturbing "gifts", threatened, and almost killed me. I felt as though I would never escape, but I did and have been safe for years. Watching Unsolved Mysteries always makes me feel better, because I know there are other people out there who understand horrible, "impossible" things happening to them. I felt so sad for the cousin in this segment. Her best friend/ cousin-in-law killed her cousin AND it took her months to realize what was going on. I'm sure the betrayal, pain, and loss has never left her. These pretenders are such amazing actors, they fool and break people.
