Megarun 2024 - Camera testing - Ft: TheGoldenCummins

Trying out a Photo + Video setup with the Nikon D850 with the 70-200 and the all-new GoPro Hero 12. With photography as my priority for myself that day, I opted to get the stills shot which left the video portion lacking. Next outing I will be trying out the 24-70 Nikon combo with the Hero 12. It should allow me to get in much closer for the stills and then leave me in a good position for the video capture.

Hybred cameras are so close to dedicated cameras these days that I don't see the point of having a dedicated camera unless you are working on a big budget project where is is required. Even some big studios are using the sony fx 30 or fx 3 to shoot their feature films . Dedicated cameras do have the edge in fidelity but the difference these days is negligible especially after compression when uploading on social media sites. Great video!

I do like my Hybred cameras. It makes for a smaller kit for the day. On productions you will hear me say a lot, "Use the right tool for the job" That could mean us sustituting in the Iphone for an angle we can put the production camera in or, we need to use the production camera as the standard for netflix requires a certain % of the production to be filmed on a netflix approved camera. That is why we now own an Ursa 12k. The Black Magic 6k's and 4'k are great for pretty much everything else. For single operator situations, I will go with a set of several GoPros and the Stills camera. It sacrifics a little bit in video quality, but allows the story to be told. Another thing you will hear me say is "Story trumps video quality" and "Audio Trumps the visuals"
I agree, in most cases. Hybrid cameras the go to for ease of use. Dedicated cameras however are layed out in a manner which makes them easier to dial in the video or photo setting.
Like the above video, the talking parts are just shot on a Hero 11, good enough for what it needed to do. BUT, I forgot to switch the audio from right channel only due to me using a Rode wireless pro microphone. Editing mistake on my part.
