- Is Maserati making its best cars in decades? In this episode Jonny Smith explores the new piston and now fully electric Maserati product line up (www.maserati.com/gb/en/models), shadows the Maserati MSG race team in the Formula E London E-Prix and reminds the world of what marvellous cars have worn the trident badge over its 109 year company existence.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
Maserati has recently launched its first full EV with the GranTurismo Folgore. You can still buy a V6 version if you wished, but it's not as fast or urban-friendly. Same goes for the Grecale SUV and soon an electric MC20 will be added to the model line-up. Interesting times indeed.

I dismissed Formula E when it started, and haven't followed it at all since, so those stats re. how the cars have evolved was impressive. I can see Formula E having a much greater influence on road cars than F1, going forward.
Couldn't agree more
That is a Quattroporte in the Miami Vice scene, not a Biturbo!
glad I'm not the only idiot triggered by this
Jonny, your content just gets better & better; this is so watchable! Deep diving into such a legacy brand & showing us their new drive (pun intended!) into different areas. Thank you
I disagree, this video is a low point, a paid advertorial
Unlike Jonny, I am not excited
What a great episode... getting a glimpse of what is perhaps the most high-tech racing series ever was fascinating.
I followed Formula E in the 1st season, when the race were completely on YT.
I don't know where to watch them now, but they have come a long way in the last years.
Within 9 years you have a car that runs double the distance with nearly double the top Speed while being lighter.
Thanks Jonny for taking us along with you enjoyed it as always ..yes my pic is the Stig lol
What an absolutely brilliant episode. That road car....wow. I love the shape and style of Maseratis, and that car looked so good on the outside, and refreshingly cool on the inside. And then the insight to Formula E. Thanks Jonny from NZ. Your channel will just grow and grow now and that will be well-deserved. This is great. And then you do reviews which are entertaining and useful. And then of course there are barn finds, or travels through someone's incredible car collection. Keep it coming mate.
Really appreciate this balanced comment. Thank you. Great to see brands straddling both Electric and piston with a convincing level of conviction.
Great perspective Jonny!. Formula e has come a long way and has a way to go yet. Interesting times indeed.
Such a classic Dad-shake @23:49 another great video Jonny, a fresh look at something I thought I knew already.
Great video and a great reminder of this event in the summer, really good to find out more about the teams and the challenges, great stuff!
Good to see this type of video. Fair play carrying that driver interview haha!
Great, great episode, where loads of interesting points were discussed. Not least was the aspect of genuine family fun with low noise - no need for ear protection particularly for kids - and low priced tickets (well lower than Formula 1 anyway).
The development in the cars over the last 10 yrs has been stratospheric and particularly with Maserati.
Loved it, loved it loved it.
And that new Maser Coupé - I WANT ONE !!!!
Really interesting video, good to see team staff that don’t normally get to world feed and their passion for FE and Maserati. Also that road car looks like a weapon.
It's always good to let people talk on camera who mostly live behind the scenes of car companies. Glad you enjoyed it. And yes, the GT is a handsome thing. Full review shortly on the Folgore version.
@@TheLateBrakeShowGreat video Jonny. Looks like you had a lot of fun 👍🏎️🏎️🏎️🏁
I’m curious, what were you saying originally when you should’ve been saying Grecale?
Great video on Maserati, both its road and racing future. I recall admiring Merak & Bora when a lad but nothing of note since 2bh. Agree with others about Formula E and its appeal to families unlike F1 which I haven't watched for years. Great channel and interesting videos 👍
I don't know about you Johnny, but Formula E's sound brings me back to my childhood playing with my Scalextric on the floor at home. The sound is just louder. In fact, it seems like a full scale TCR (Total Control Racing - remember that?) and their team engineers are like the Scalextric geeks tinkering before a race.
I’ve always felt Maserati built the most beautiful cars(yes that includes the Bi-turbo) Nice to see them racing again too. Excellent video as always, Jonny.
Respect for how much they've improved in the last ~6-8 years. In the 2000s Maserati was basically a punchline (even if I am irrationally fond of the Coupe of that era, that's just dumb nostalgia talking; I know they weren't good cars) but now they're really compelling, in a great position to be more special than Audi/BMW/Merc sorta cars, more demure and attainable than Ferrari, more characterful than Porsche, more robust than Alfa Romeo...I like where they're positioned. Also been an FE fan since season 1 and Gen3 is pretty amazing!
One thing Laurie Clog should've mentioned that isn't spec and actually gives the teams a huge amount of performance differentiation is *software* . I know it's not sexy but it's ultra relevant; FE is proper living breathing motorsport that is advancing the state of the motorcar. While ICE racing is more and more restrained just to make the racing happen. That's one of the most exciting and compelling things about FE.
Exactly. These companies are learning how to tweak the software to squeeze the most range at the highest speed out of the least amount of battery. That is invaluable knowledge they can apply to the real world. Transport Evolved did a few nice segments on FE and one of them was specifically about how they are using compute power to figure out how to design the battery management systems to get the most out of the Gen 3 batteries. And that knowledge can also trickle down to real cars. Really cool stuff.
The Only exciting moment in this video, was with Laurie Clog 😍
Another wonderful video Jonny, you never fail to make this stuff look easy, and thanks for showing us the team and capturing how passionate they are for one of the oldest car brands. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for this comment. There are many fascinating people behind brands and teams who often don't get their chance on camera. We wanted to show a bit of this, and the progression of the company - as well as this bold new era of EV racing.
You knocked it out the park with this one and truly believe the production value of your content in this space is second to none. Have a great evening.@@TheLateBrakeShow
@@TheLateBrakeShowMaserati have jumped the shark. The golden era was fifteen years ago, not now.
This what post-the-old-trio TopGear should have been. The whole team should feel proud for their fantastic work. Thanks.
What
Kudos to your videographer again. Excellent work.
Thanks Jonny this has bought F1 to a level for the family to enjoy. Chers
What a great episode! So great to see Maserati back to making good looking cars again. How did you manage to get all those interviews and great footage? This could have been a mainstream documentary, well done you and your team.
Very interesting, and nicely presented as usual.
Maserati Biturbos are actually quite good and are some of the most undervalued classics. Screw what you heard!
I'd have a Biturbo or one of it's derivatives over a Grecale/Levante any day
I've always fancied a silver Biturbo.
Superb back catalogue, any QP, 90's Shamal/Ghibli, MC12...... And the modern ones are great, except for their SUV's.
Thanks Jonny. Looking forward to this 👍
You got the Grecale name wrong while filming didn’t you lol
😂 either that or said the wrong one and didn’t realise, I like the fact it was badly hidden though
How would you pronounce it?
Love the voice-over, Jonny!
Great content really nice dive in to formula e and good to hi light that it’s now driving innovation in road cars.
Love it Johnny, racing EV and grid walks, Martin Brundle would be proud. Another dream car now with my favourite power plant, must work harder to get one.
Not made a formula E race yet. As ever Jonny a great video and here I am wishing I was there to enjoy it. Maserati are certainly looking promising. 👍⚡️🏁
Love Maseratis. I love them I love them I love them. But they should really make a small light gt. 1000-1300kg, regen like the formula e cars, light, nimble, simple and driver focused. I would make shure to be able to buy a car like that!
I so want a Quattroporte , just for the noise
Jonny awsome video more like this, of going in to expanding brands :)
Many thanks, glad you appreciated the extra depth. It isn't for everyone, but on this channel we like to mix things up and bring a more docu approach occasionally.
And that is precisely what we love, keep up with the great work @@TheLateBrakeShow
I’ve been a sucker for Maser for 25 years now. They are a brand of almost, as for years in the early 60s they had the quickest car at Lemans, but reliability issues. Luck plays a big part too.
To prove how bad I have the disease. I drove a biturbo from Boston to California when I was 19 (zero issues). Owned several others and still own a late Merak SS. It will stay in my blood for good but sadly I still can’t get excited about electric racing. Sounds like a group of fax machines taking a corner.
The F-E cars sound like spaceship’s flying by!
Yes, they are like space ships racing. Different sounds, but no less faacinating.
Super interesting episode. Would be very interested in a longer road trip in the GT
We'd like to try that.
Excellent episode
London Classic Car Show paved the way for formula E at Excel....albeit with a MkII Jag doing tremendous burnouts 😂
0-60 in 2 seconds is great, but I have to ask WHY in a street car. Its not like you can do that leaving ASDA.
You can if you've been shoplifting 😮
I’m intrigued to know how you were pronouncing grecale before the overdubs 😂
Hey, been a massive Maserati fan for as long as I can remember, always been a dream manufacturer and had loads of beautiful Alfas but never been able to afford a maser until earlier this year - what a great thing middle age is!!! However, ours isn’t a great experience I’m afraid….we have a 23 plate Grecale Trofeo a great first few weeks but currently in the process of rejecting the car, due to an engine/gearbox fault. Would be interesting to see if others have had any issues. We were hoping it was a software issue, but isn’t - dealership, whilst good and honest, admit they don’t know what’s wrong with it. Absolutely gutted, will never buy from the brand again due to how we have been treated. Truly beautiful cars though, just wish my 50 year wait had a better ending 😢
You say the dealer was "good and honest" but then say you'll not buy a Maserati "due to how we have been treated."
How were you treated poorly?
@@etmccaus Morning. Sorry didn’t make that clear, reading back. Dealership were very helpful, understanding and honest about owning up to not being able to fix the car. Issue is with Maserati UK and their associated finance company, they have been truly awful. I personally have experienced totally disrespectful behaviour from Maserati finance. We’ve been given the runaround and blocked during conversations. Black and white case - dealer and Maserati Italy admit they can’t fix the car, we rejected the vehicle within 90 day period within our consumer rights - which essentially is that their given one chance to fix the car, if they can’t we can reject. They’ve actually had two chances. Long winded reply, but essentially, my/our experience has been awful with Maserati themselves, so much so I wouldn’t trust them and their attitude (for lack of a better word) stinks!! They’ll never have any of our money again. I’m gutted about it all, I’ll always look at their vehicles with admiration, but in all honesty couldn’t go through this again, stress has been horrendous when we’re trying to already deal with very stressful jobs. Sad days 😕
Nice video thank u 🤘
The exhaust note of the piston Maseratis though. I can't think of a better sounding exhaust.
Do you like the fact they haven't abandoned their piston cars, but co-created the EV models alongside?
@thelatebrakeshow I think we'd agree that Maserati are doing a fine job at producing their finest piston cars today, also creating the sexiest evs we've seen so far. EV doesn't have to be dull
I and their sales team obviously think there is a market for both currently and Maserati like Porsche are smart to keep there feet in both camps until the full EV transition is complete. @@TheLateBrakeShow
@@TheLateBrakeShow Maserati shouldn't be doing EVs at all. They should just go back to making naturally-aspirated V8 grand tourers like they did in the Sixties, Seventies and Noughties.
@@chrisd924 the EV transition is in reverse... electric vehicles don't work in the real world. Most people can't afford them and those who can don't want them.
Shamal is one of my top 5 cars to have
Interesting braking strategy on the Formula E car. Could we see amodified form this strategy being used on road cars in future? This also makes me wonder about rear wheel drive single motor EVs, Under heavy braking are they relying on mechanical brakes and wasting the regeneration potential of a front motor?
I love all of your videos well done keeping up hope you come in to Worcester 😂

Really enjoyed this one Jonny. Fun and interesting. Did i detect a problem with pronouncing 'Grecale' ?!
😳

Gre-car-lee
Amazing video
I was a bit disappointed at that very boring also-ran CUV at the beginning... is there some rule that says that all of these kinds of cars have to look identical? But the Formule E stuff was really cool. The blue light bars on the cars look wild... I kinda wish the teams could have their own color lights... it would be like Tron!
this was outstanding…. thank you!
Many thanks
I have been following Formula e since it started, and am quite impressed with its progression. I see it as a good alternative to F1; one where the results are not a foregone conclusion!
Exciting times for Maserati indeed!
Woah, I didn't realise how far Formula E has come.
200 mph definitely feels like the tipping point that could help it in becoming mainstream.
Those that miss the engine notes have to admit that the push for efficiency already ruined them. There's a new cool noise in town.
If nothing else, all their new cars look fantastic.
There are very good reasons why historic racing is constantly growing in popularity
People like noise and danger, but there's also room for progression, for a newer generation of motor racing enthusiasts. Neither need to stifle the other.
Great insight Jonny. I would love to see Formula E racing on "normal" race tracks. There are probably a lot of logistics to overcome before that happens I know but it could be really interesting.

Quite the intriguing vehicle this new GranTurismo! I am a fan!
Seen the new GT Folgore drive review?
I never like watching crashes and people who do are pretty messed up, but that actually looked like a awesome race. I used to watch F1 but after Benetton left it got so boring and I faded away to the Moto GP, super Moto and British superbikes but even that got kinda boring, I might give formula E a watch and it's nice to see Maserati making silly name's again they love a good silly name
I'm guessing they changed the name of the Grecale SUV after filming? Not a bad effort at dubbing it in afterwards!
The boomerang was bonkers
Wasn't it just?

I'm so sorry to be 'that guy' but the Miami Vice car is a Quattroporte III. 🤓
Yes, noted. Apols.
I love the look of the MC20 great engine, carbon chassis…but how on gods earth did they make it as heavy as a steel car🤦♂️
Quadraporte is Italian for Four Doors. Sounds sexy, and was, but just saying it's a four-door car as its name? Bold, Maserati, bold.
Whatever.....it's only like the Americans writing songs about roads ...!
...imagine if we had a song called 'I Get My Kicks on the M42'....
Levante so underrated
Laurie Clog must have one of the shortest names that contains all the vowels
Miami vice appearance was a Quattroporte.
nice ADR there Jonny
I really want to know what he was saying instead of 'Grecale'
Love the MC20 and seeing some life placed back into the brand, but wonder if it isn't too little, too late.

Bravo! This is progressive music to our ears.
My ultimate daily drive has always been a Gran Turismo. Cliche but ever since i had a lift in one i've been smitten and the electric one looks just as good as the ICE version.
They are a subtle, classy machine actually.
Interesting.... when formula E goes on big circuits and manufacturers can make their own chassis.. it could be great :) on a side note.. the gammons moaning about the impending end of the internal combustion engine have no idea how they come across.. or do they? it seems they have Sunak's ear...
It just reminds me of the movie Tron❤👍🇦🇺
TBH i cant wait for Formula E to take off. I would actually rather see it without a driver. I know that might sound mad, but eclectic cars are insane I'd love to see them going neck to neck, all limits off, just have a minimum weight and safety. I guess it would be just like remote control car racing or nitro, only very large scale.
