Great videos. Just got my transaxle dropped on my 2006 Toyota Matrix XRS (6-speed)!
One thing that this video misses (or is different on the 6-speed Matrix) is that the rear motor mount will not be able to come out with just the bolts shown in this video (there are additional bolts coming down from the top that appear to be nearly impossible to access with the transaxle in place). We solved this by removing the three bolts holding the motor mount to the transaxle. It was quite difficult as the 06 Matrix has even less room behind the motor than the 05 Corolla, but was doable removing two from the top (literally laying on the engine for one) and one from the bottom (by feel as its almost impossible to see from beneath). You will need a 14mm wrench for some of them (too tight for a socket).
In any case thanks again as this video series was super helpful and all things considered very complete!

Thanks for the note. I did this one some years ago but I recall, after all the bolts in the video were removed I was able to lift the engine. Sounds like a different design?

@@DougBrownVancouver It very well could be!
I wanted to point it out (and thank you for the videos) because this is one of the top video series that come up when you search for the "2006 Matrix clutch replacement" and was otherwise spot on for that model as well!

the rear engine mount was tough to get out. I had to detach the 2 nuts though the back bracket. then, jack up the transmission till the front bolt popped through the cross member. than I removed the cross member and could get the rear bracket out of the way of the bracket attached to the trans. once I did this it popped off easy!!! thanks for your videos. it saved me a ton of money!!!

I got this far watching, but now my head is just mush..lol. I guess clutch replacement is one job I'm never going to achieve. A really good video thought, explaining every step clearly.

LOL. I looked at a lot of videos and I thought they were way too simple, so I did the step-by-step one that takes a little more time to watch, but doesn't breeze by stuff that could be problematic. I get some comments from viewers that complain about me focusing overly long on basics, but they don't realize that some people come looking for the basics. If you have a spare car, a clutch job can be quite fulfilling especially if you know what to anticipate. It would take you several weekends of fiddling to get it done or a single weekend if you had no interruption plus all the tools.

That's a good point. As you say, if you have a spare car, you could take your time with it. If i had both a spare car and a garage, i might have tried it myself. Terrible is, i have neither. I really miss having a garage. As a kid, the garage was my domain.. Lol. I loved messing about with stuff.

I wish you showed the vss wires in order on the plug. Since I didn't watch your video first and dropped the transmission and the wires pulled out of the plug that I didn't disconnect on my vss.

Thanks for the detailed video. It has helped me with my car. On the rear engine mount, did you just remove the main large bolt and not the bracket off the transaxle itself. It looked to me like you left the front and rear engine mount bracket attached to the transaxle. The bolts holding that rear mounting bracket look hard to get to.

Hi Doug, I'll be doing this soon on my Pontiac Vibe. Did you rent the jack with the transmission adapter or purchase it? Could you recommend a model and source?

why did you dismantle everything, is it necessary?

my only fear before attempting this job, is to have one of the exhaust manifold bolts breaking on me when unscrewing them. that would be BAD NEWS, to have half a bolt broken in the block, and I don't have any acetylene torch to pre-heat before removal.

Yes, and I was prepared to just call in a tow truck if something catastrophic happened. Like a stripped bolt on the flywheel or something like that.

hey great video but my bell housing is separated a little in the rear and front about twice as much and won't budge anymore what am i doing wrong or do i just keep wiggling it and how hard can i pry at it thanks

I definitely had the same thing happen. I started using the jack to move the transaxle up and down and just tried to loosen it that way. I don't know how you mounted your engine, but if you've also got that on a jack you can do the same while you also do the transaxle. I did a Passat a few years ago and there was very little space, but after going through a couple of these manipulations I was able to finally get the transaxle off the engine housing.
Let me know if that works?

my friend came over last night and we did wiggle it off. i lifted and wiggle the trans while he wiggled the engine at the same time and we got it it off maybe not the safe but it worked like a charm... thanks for the reply

Glad it worked. That's pretty much how everybody does it--Just wiggling the things around!

How did you remove the passenger size driveaxle? I was attempting to remove with bracket but it seem almost Impossible. I got all of the bolts removed but the alignment pins are making it difficult. I can't get to the two bolts for the bearing case to remove them. I could only get to one. There just isn't enough room to get my bar to the one at the top.

did you mention about the passenger side? I used a sledge hammer to get the driver side axle out but there's no room to use a sledge hammer on the passenger side and the pry trick isn't working for whatever reason.
