Thanks for the video. I upgraded the camshafts in my 1ZZ and found out I had to get correct sized shim buckets. In my E36 BMW when I replaced the camshafts this was not necessary as it uses rocker arms and is self-adjusting.
Very good video! Thank you for the upload and detail. I love my 2003 GT and next week I move into my new house with a 2 car garage and I can't wait to do more work on my Vibe.
Great how to. I have a 2006 Matrix w/ 130k and it runs perfect. I use Mobil 1 full syn and oem filter. Oil change costs me under $30. Change it roughly every 6-6.5k. One more thing I would check would be timing chain. Just give it a little push down., there should be almost no deflection or play. Did you do this because of a valve cover gasket leak or purely for demonstration?
If it still makes a clicking noise in the upper valve when starting the engine and all were within tolerance what else could be making the clicking noise?
I got a high mileage 2009 Corolla (200k) and it recently has a "Lifter Noise" and based on my research, may be the valve need to be adjusted. Would adjustment on the valve like you did may solve "Lifter Noise". I also found out some oil additives (Lucas / Liqui Moly) may help too but not sure it is a permanent fix. Thanks again for the excellent video.
yes need change those bucket valve lifter, no oil gona work, thicker oil might reduce noise , changing those lifter very easy , if you have qs ask me , i just did a rebuild on this engine
I’m hearing a ticking on my 2017 Toyota Corolla SE 1.8. Any way I can send you a video somehow? So you can see if it’s this indeed. I’ll truly appreciate it. My wife and newborn are in the car daily
Yes I think he meant if you are recording discrepancies between plugs packs etc during diagnostics you want to correlate which part came from which cylinder. The condition of these are extra clues (or even causes) for any problems found.
How can I find out which fuse is for the electronic fuel injection? some of the fuses and relays have odd names on this engine.. I found the fuel pump relay in the drivers dash fusebox.
Good video. As I own the same car, I was wondering what oil change interval has the owner been following and what type of oil have they been using? Thanks.
Great video. Can anybody tell me why one of the valve cover vents has a one way check valve, and the other vent doesn't? They both go from the valve cover to the intake. So why would one be one way only but the other not one way? Doesn't the unblocked passage negate the one way function of the other one? If they cared about stuff going into the valve cover wouldn't they use 2 one way valves instead of only one? I don't get it.
Looks like the timing chain is tighter after you did the compression test how did you do that or that normal for some slack to be seen and then tighten up?
Great video! The only thing missing is what to do when a valve lash is way out. I have a ticking in the top end of my 08 I'm confident I could get it apart but have no idea what to once I find the valve(s) that need adjustment.
That is were things get difficult. There is no adjustment, it comes down to replacing shim buckets and often requires the cylinder head be removed. What is the mileage on your '08?
I have a 2009 Corolla (2ZR-FE) engine with 200k and recently has lifter noise, run like a Diesel. More quiet when put in N or P but not D. Does the valve need to be adjusted? Some say Yes, some say No.
Hi, i have toyota platz with 1sz-fe engine auto transmission, problem is when my car is cold i start its not stable i have to accelerate to keep it start until it get warm and it is power less and didnt reverse until its gets warm.
There are no adjustments, only replacement with different thickness - limitation of mechanical lifter used in Vibe engine. When I created the video the tolerances were fine, otherwise I would have created a 2nd part showing replacement. Shim bucket replacement requires a substantial valve train tear down.
Yes and yes. Since the Vibe does not use hydraulic lifters, this service is needed to check for wear. Looking at other posts it appears doing the first check at 150k miles establishes a good baseline with follow up checks every 50k miles.

You are right. I still searching for Valves adjustment which may cause Lifter noise for 2ZR-FE engine. My Corolla run like a Diesel due to Lifter Noise.
@@callmebackfriday2 try rislone engine treatment. Use in place of 1/2 quart of oil. After 200 miles my noise is completely gone. It mixed with any oil. I never would have believed it worked but my mechanic told me he had great success with it. I highly recommend for your engine
This, so far, is the best in-depth video I've seen to date specific to the Vibe/Matrix/Corolla. I really appreciate your posting this.

My Compliments to your calm, knowledge, and pace.
My 2006 Pontiac vibe has a lifter ticking, I was brought to this video and it has helped me understand a little more about it. Thank you
Fred, you have a talent sir, so clear, perfect pace, well done.
Got a Vibe a couple years ago. Your breakdown vids have been invaluable. Thanks so much.
I'm going to watch this full next time or soon for our 2002 corolla.
Thanks for sharing!

Great video but why check the valve clearance if you have to remove the head to adjust the clearance (MAJOR job)? Thanks.

Specified torque for Ventilation Valve Sub-assy, (PCV Valve),is : 22 ft-lbf (30 N-m or 306 kgf-cm).
The compression number is really good.
9:18 Correction. The bolts on the outside get torque to 96 in/lb and the inside ones 80 in/lb. Thanks for the video.

@Fred Lyst do you still have this car in 2022?
Lots of helpful information! Great video.
My engine makes noise and I checked valve clearance. 7 of 8 Intake valves out of specs by 0.020mm. Do you think 0.020mm is enough to cause the noise?

1:21 you can mix the coil pack they all are same no need to put them exactly from where you took them.
Same as spark plug you can mix them
Yeah I noticed that one

On my matrix 04 I did the compression test and then I started to lose pressure, on cylinder 1 and 2, do you know what can it be?
I have a 2007 matrix with the 1.8. I called the dealer and they said it doesn't require a valve adjustment. What gives?
Good video. As I own the same car, I was wondering what oil change interval has the owner been following and what type of oil have they been using? Thanks.
What was the value of the mileage in this car when you were measuring the tolerance of valves on this video?
Vibe was at 202k miles.
Did it pass the vibe check?
Did your car max out the odometer at 299,999?
why was dry compression test done with 3 plugs still inside?

Why do you need to jack it up to do your valve adjustment? Just put it in neutral
Looks like the timing chain is tighter after you did the compression test how did you do that or that normal for some slack to be seen and then tighten up?
I did not adjust the chain, self adjusting. Believe it was just the way the chain stopped.
Some section stretches more than other. That's kindda normal.
What camera and headlight did you use for this video?
Why do you need to jack it up to adjust your valves?? Just put it in neutral
200k and all good? Maybe I'll wait a little more ON mine, a 2010 1zzfe with 86k miles ON it.
What is a symptom that would cause me to have to check my valve clearance?
Loss of power at higher mileage. The valve tolerance check is mostly a preventative maintenance item. Tolerance check verifies even wear
60k mile intervals if you're a stickler for FSM

Could be a many different issues, how many miles are on the Vibe. Is the dash showing any engine errors?

No code, I was going to replace the spark plugs and had the time to complete the recommended service check on the lifter assemblies
