Excellent instruction of a very vital important, yet simple component. Anyone with common sense can apply this preventive maintenance. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
A small adjustable wrench opened at 7/8" will remove the PCV. Take your time and a cheap adjustable wrench is fine... old 2000 Corolla is the same engine as a Pontiac Vibe... The replacement hose is about $15 delivered ... peanuts and you can do it all yourself to replace hose and valve! Easily save $200-250 versus getting this done at a garage... see ?
My valve supposedly had been changed at 130k per carfax; put new one on at 230k; original was still there; not clogged nutcracker hose was entirely filled with crud down into intake too.
I just got this serviced on my 2003 Toyota Matrix, I purchased it on ebay but when I started to replace it, i notice the treads were a little more longer then the OEM PCV Valve i had removed, I had to improvise.
As I have the same car and the same year this video is helpful in demonstrating what my engine would look like if I had NEGLECTED it for the last 12 years. I change my PCV valve every 5 years and use PAO synthetic oil. If this Vibe's engine has gone 200,000 miles then mine ought to last 2 Million. ;)
I hope you caught the issue before the point of terminal damage . Since this video was done over a year ago, I would like to know how the car is running and whether the engine is burning much oil. Thanks.
Nice video this might be what is wrong with my 03 matrix XRS. There's a lot of oil leaking around the area I was also thinking it might be the PCV valve or gasket area???
123 456 2zzge is a vvt-li engine it has vvtli written on the head cover and it has a aluminium intake manifold the engine which you see in the video is a 1zz-fe vvti with plastic intake manifold
There is usually a sticker mounted on the underside of the bonnet which tells you the specific engine type. If not, try looking in the owners manual or online.
AFAIK, 2ZZ-GE was only in 1st generation Vibe GT models (and Matrix/Corolla XRS, Celica GTS and some Lotus Elises). Any other 1st gen Vibe or Matrix should have the 1ZZ-FE
+Matthew Braun I did not have replacement on hand, but it is on the list of items to complete during the next oil change. Given the age of the hose replacement would be better than cleaning.
That looks pretty bad mate i did my Yaris 2002 87.000 miles always serviced religiously and yearly 3.000 miles (I do low miles) and it looked half as bad as yours so it's worth taking it off everyone it's so easy plus whilst you under the hood (Bonnet in the UK) clean the MAF sensor it's quick to do.Great video btw.Oh and i cleaned mine out not replaced it plus the cabin air filter which was bloody filthy and that's the air you breath in the vehicle lol
Will a bad pcv valve cause hesitation and stalling when engine gets to operating temp? ..my vibe has been parked for months because of issues..285,000 miles and I never knew to look for this valve..thanks!
@Jay Todd ! If you have PVC problem, after 285k miles, you need to change 2 things now. 1. PVC Valve 2. Head Gasket. If possible change the tube as well.
Do you need to clean intake now, maybe Seafoam or something now? Mine keeps blowing off at the intake side. I replaced valve 6 months ago and now blowing off at start up a few times a week. Any idea whats going on? I have a 2009 Vibe btw...
Really depends on how how much oil is bypassing the PCV valve. If the hose is blowing off, I suspect blockage. Try running air through the hose to see if it clear. I am not familiar with where the PCV hose goes into the intake on a 2009 Vibe, if is is low enough, gunk from the intake may have accumulated near the port, requiring it to be cleaned. Seafoam may not help, would likely require physically cleaning the port or intake.
+Fred Lyst thanks for the reply. looks like pcv same position, remove intake plenum to remove. I'll likely but me house as well as physically clean it.
@Thabo Poo ! You don't require metal manifold, unless you are installing turbo kit. What is there, is faithful one. This is 1ZZFE engine; is very faithful one. You see, sometimes, PVC valve blocked because the must have been running with low octane petrol, i.e. 91, or this engine was filled with full synthetic oil, which bad for this engine. I ran the same engine, from the first filling onwards -- except for the drive away fuel, on BP 98 Octane. After seeing many videos of PVC valve problems in RUclips, I decided to check my PVC, Oxygen Sensors, Mass Air Flow Sensor, Timing Chain Tensioner, I found none of them are required to change. There is no messy grits on PVC, no carbon on Oxygen Sensor, no dust on Mas Air-flow Sensor, and no oil leak through Timing Chain Tensioner. But why, even in this 12 year? Answer I found answer in myself. It is, regular self-service as per manufacture's advise, and use of high octane (98) petrol, without fail.
Another very important yet looked past part. Please remember to change on any vehicle guys n gals
Thanks for this video. I have a 2008 Vibe with a 1ZZ-FE and a list of maintenance items to check after a long winter. I just added this to my list.
Have a look at your cabin filter too and see how dirty it is as i washed mine out and just replaced it,just to breath in clean fresh air.
I have been searching for this as you show , Excellent video and explaining , good to know and learn , thank you so much

Great, concise, complete. Thanks.
Very helpful video. Thank you very much!!
PCV valve costs about $9 for a 2000 Corolla 1.8L engine... so they are very cheap to buy new and just put in. Cheap and simple to replace.
My valve supposedly had been changed at 130k per carfax; put new one on at 230k; original was still there; not clogged nutcracker hose was entirely filled with crud down into intake too.
Thanks for sharing. I will check the valve on my vibe.
What do you think about people who take if off and put a small filter on it
Excellent video!
Great video. Similar problem on our 2.4L (2009 Matrix XRS).
Knowledge is power and thank you very much

What is the torque needed to tight the new valve to the valve cover?
Perfect video. Thank you. What is the name or part number of the hose connecting to the pcv?

Used cars are always fun, guessing what was and was not serviced by the previous owner/shop. I am just glad I caught it before things got worse.

Excellent 👍

So is the base Vibe coarse thread and GT fine thread??
I have a 2006 Vibe Base Model how do I see which engine I have? The 2 options are 1.8L1ZZ-FE, or 1.8L 2ZZ-GE
Thanks

a stock pcv valve would increase de gas consuption ?
Great video!!
Did you replace the hose?
Or is it possible to clean the hose out?

Friend ! Is your corolla the diesel?

Is there an egr valve on the 1zz-fe (04 matrix) engine. I don't see one anywhere.
No, EGR is handled as part of the VVT-I system
so,did you end up replacing the hose, too?
Yes. After noticing the issue, ordered the part and replaced once the new hose arrived.
Hello will this problem cause po 304 i tryed everthing and it shakes at a stop and waisting lots of gas
check your motor mount I was having the same problem and I changed them and also was wasting a lot of gas
How good is that manifold intake? I'm thinking of getting a metal one
Did you find one?
@Thabo Poo ! You don't require metal manifold, unless you are installing turbo kit. What is there, is faithful one.

Would this PCV valve if cracked cause the engine oil light to come on?
CAN YOU GIVE THE MYSTERY PART NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????????????????????
Man I have a 21mm deep socket and 7/8ths regular. So annoying...
you need a nail clipper dude! yuck
