  • This video is to show you what i did to remove the Variable Valve Timing Solenoid and the small Oil Filter that filters the oil to the VVT Solenoid.
    The car is a 2005 Toyota Corolla S, 1ZZFE 1.8, 100,000 Miles.
Symptoms: Erratic idle when the engine is at full operating temperature. Idle deeps below 650 RPM when coming to a stop. Engine would vibrate like it had a small misfire.
    No Codes.
Injectors Cleaned and Fuel Pressure perfect.
    New Spark Plugs.
Coils firing correctly and with a strong spark.
No Vacuum leaks on vacuum lines, brake booster, fuel vapor canister.
    Replaced the Intake Manifold Gasket.
I will post an update after driving the car for a few days to let you know if it fixed my problem.

Really excellent trick with the clip to get the filter out. You can also get needle nose pliers with a 90 deg bend at the tips. I also had a rough idle and pending lean code. Turned out slow oil leak from valve cover contaminated electrical connector on drivers side of engine block (crankshaft position sensor). This caused ECU to get bad data and try to compensate, resulting in lean condition. Cleaned connections, problem solved. Replaced valve cover gasket. 2006 Matrix with 152k mi.

I had a Yaris 2009 2NZ-FE 1.33 liter. Had exact same problem as you.
After cleaning injectors, changing sparks and throttle body cleaning, nothing helped.
Changing the solenoid did finally do the trick. My buddy mechanic told me it's 50/50 chance once you get the solenoid out that it might break and need replacement immediately. Long story short, it did fix the problem and I love your video. (FYI, I had the same milage as you lol)

I replace the timing chain tensioner on mine and it reduced the knocking on cold start. But to be fair it might be the timing chain getting stretched since it's never been changed. Rattling noise can also be from serpentine belt tensioner which is weird. Noise happens now n then especially at low rpm. Then it's that also to think about. I'm about to changed my vvti solenoid on my corolla and clean out the filter n hopefully it solves the problem on idle. If not my next step is to test fuel pressure n clean the idle air control valve since they are known to be changed around 80k miles

One thing i was going to try if i still had the car would be to remove the injectors and either clean or replace them. I did use a scope on them and the readings were good, so they werent sticking. Correct if you had a car with cable throttle. Some research into this points to a few different things. Air leaks at the intake manifold, tired MAF and tired O2 sensor are some other potential causes. But it may very well be an ECU issue in how they mapped it as well.

I no longer have the car but this by itself did not fix the low idle. It's my opinion that the low idle is a result of a compilation of things like the filter I cleaned, the variable valve solenoid, throttle body, spark plugs, oil condition, battery/alternator condition and the condition of negative and positive cables to and from the battery to the engine and the cars body, PCV valve and MAF sensor.
