- In honor of the Spring NY 2024 blackfish season opener today, here's a blast from the past.
Those of you that follow the channel, know I can hold my own when it comes to light tackle blackfish jigging, buuuuuut (and it's a BIG but), I absolutely suck at deep drop, heavy sinker rig fishing.
On this cold November day, I joined Captain Todd Mann and his crew, tog experts Mike Sadowski and James Milano, for a lesson, both a literal and figurative one, on the art of deep water, tog fishing.

Great video John...that guy is the bomb!
We need a video dedicated to making this rig lol
About half of my double digits were just a spongy twitch that came up with the whole hook inside the mouth.
Those guys are the real deal , I have seen them on FB catching multiple teenagers. I am more like you I fish locally in the L.I. Sound and prefer shallow water spinning gear with a jig .
I am going to OCM next week so I am interested in how Mike Sadowski connected his slider rig to that triple loop thing. I couldn’t see it well. Anyway you can break it down for me.
Thanks
Sadly I can’t. I’ve never tied it myself! I hit OCMD for first time with Todd and Milano this past Saturday. A couple of teenagers caught (not by me naturally)
@@jiggingjerks Yeah this will be my second time going to OCD ,it’s different fishing for me too.
Btw…we have a mutual friend Capt Mike Bady .
Thanks ,I always enjoy your videos
@@anthonyocchiogrosso5519 good luck and Capt Mike is the best. Just a great guy!
Thanks man!
awesome video - that guy really knows what he is doing. So much wisdom - the advice on managing slack line in current; that the time to let chew is proportional to crab size; and the little fish bite like big fish and the big fish bite like little fish! It is this kind of knowledge that lets people limit out on big keepers while I catch a couple dozen shorts.
I feel same as you
Mike's face before the last fish when you swung 😂😂😂 I missed that whole run down in the beginning at the wheel.
Hey, how many guys does Chase take out on a charter
Thanksgiving
Up to 6
Heading to Maryland on Monday, for a 2 day deep.Water
Tog trip Wondering If the eclipse will affect the bite
We were there Saturday. I'd be more concerned about the water temp
Thanks for the upload. Friggin guy can tie a knot on the fly...thought Todd was good...
This rain during the NJ opener is a killer
Nah it was really good on the jetty today ngl
@bigtimegoblin yea, it really wasn't that bad. I should've gone out.
Hey, John.Where are you heading in Rhode Island when you come up this way. I have a couple of airbnbs If you need to crash let me know
This was in November. I stayed at a local motel. Was good for one night
Cool video, I agree with them on the Long leader I lost a well over 10lb fish because my leader was not long enough and was rubbing on the wreck. This is in the lis where those fish are unicorns. Ever since then I am a big believer in shock leader.
I like fluoro top shop though, fluoro is more abrasion resistant than mono. 40lb is fine and easiest to tie fluoro to braid.
I tie all my rigs in advance like they do and put them in a cd book.
For the rigs I tie 65lb mono. The heavier leader stands off and doesn’t tangle my snafu rig which I tie. I join my top shot to my leader using a barrel swivel.
For the knots I tested multiple knots on break strength for braid to mono/fluoro. I used to use an Albright and sometime an Alberto. Problem with those knots is they can slip. I am now an rp or red Phillips knot guy. Rp has 100% break strength and won’t slip. I tested 10 knots and it was easiest to tie and it is still small enough to reel through the guides.
I feel your pain on learning the bire on the rig. I started as a rig guy and learning not to swing on a jig was a big challenge.
What i am also noticing is some days the rig produces more than the jig and vice versa. I observe what people are doing on the boat and switch accordingly. Knowing to fish both and use as a tool seems best way.
What do you mean by scratch scratch ...
The tiniest of taps
Holy shit John, it was like fishing lessons with Bo Dietl.
Great video halk. Love fishing with you. Can’t wait for this summer.
And stop tangling Todd on those dog sharks. 😂
Same here bud. Your not just a great fisherman, but truly humble (despite my you know who joke)
Does Mike know you published this with all his tips? Lol, can’t wait to start the NJ season down here
He does lol. He was calmer than normal knowing he was on film :)
Another great video. Always an education. What size were the hooks you were using?
Thank you and they were 5/0s
Everyone has their preferences with how much mono. I personally like to fish A LOT of mono 5/6 cranks onto the reel plus length of rod maybe more, not an exact science. Just how I grew up learning
Nice way to open the season. Who's license were you fishing under?
This was November of last year.
@@jiggingjerks Oh good, I thought you were showing something you weren't supposed to. I was going to give you a heads up in case you didn't notice. Good luck with the 2024 season!!!
Is he smoking a joint in the beginning?
I don't think so
I smoke cigarettes
Belmar rig nothing new
Lose the spinning gear.
